The OPDs at the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital, Christian Medical College and Hospital and other private hospitals such as Fortis Hospital remained shut on Saturday and patients had to face inconvenience due to the same. The members of the IMA took out a peaceful protest march and condemned the brutal rape and murder of the second year PG student in Kolkata. The doctors in a large number gathered at the IMA House in the morning and after a brief session, a march was taken out from the IMA to the Ferozepur road, which was blocked for about 30 minutes. Female doctors showed their anger on streets. Later, the protest ended when the police persuaded them to lift the blockade on the Ferozepur road. Dr Manoj K Sobti, convener of the association, demanded that police inquiry should be monitored by the High Court judge. “There should be a central Act for any kind of assault against doctors and strict punishment for culprits and all hospitals should be declared as safe zones,” he said. Dr Rohit Rampal, secretary, IMA, Ludhiana, while addressing the march said the assault was not on a doctor in Kolkata but on the daughter of the nation. “In this moment of grief, each one of us, irrespective of our profession, cast and creed, should unite and come forward and make it loud and clear that enough is enough and we as a society will not tolerate it anymore,” he said. Various organisations and NGOs, including Indian Dental Association, PCMS Association, Ludhiana OBS and Gynae Association, Ludhiana Citizen Council, WOW Women Association, EK ASS, Rotary Club Harmony, All India Integrated Medical Association, Resident Doctors’ Association and City Needs, also supported the protest today. As the OPD of the Dayanand Medical College and Hospital remained shut today, patients faced inconvenience. Patients not only from the state but also from the entire northern region of the country visit the hospital for treatment. Medical Superintendent Bishav Mohan said the medical fraternity was shaken by the incident. “We are marching to show that we will not tolerate such crimes and urge the authorities to act decisively to protect the fraternity,” he said. Gurcharan Singh, a patient who had come from Jammu for his follow-up treatment, was taken aback after seeing the closed OPD at the DMCH. “Now, I will have to stay in the city and meet doctor tomorrow as it will not convenient for me to return to Jammu today and come again another day,” he said. Another patient, Surinder Kaur, who visited the CMCH, said she had come from Moga for the followup treatment but on reaching the hospital on Saturday, she came to know that the OPD was closed. “I understand that doctors are fighting for a cause. Hence, I have no complaints and will come again on Monday,” she said. Body found in vacant Man found hanging in hotel plot near Central Jail ACTION TO BE TAKEN AS Tribune News Service Ludhiana, August 17 A man was found dead under mysterious circumstances in a vacant plot near the Central Jail, Ludhiana, on Saturday. Panic gripped people staying in the surrounding area after they got information about the incident. The victim has not been identified so far. A man, Lucky, after noticing the body had informed the police. He said he works as a watchman in the area. He came to the place at 10 am today and saw the man lying in the vacant plot. As he went closer, he was shocked to see that the person was lying dead. Afterwards, he called the police. The police took the body to the Civil Hospital mortuary. SI Janak Raj said the body was recovered from a vacant plot. A probe was launched in the case. CCTV cameras installed in the area and nearby places were being scanned to get any clue in the matter. The police said the man might have died due to excessive drinking. The exact cause would be known after the arrival of the autopsy report. Ludhiana, August 17 A man was found hanging in a hotel on Friday night. A woman, who was also present in the hotel room along with the man, had cut marks on her hand. The incident came to light when hotel staff reached the room after listening to woman’s screams. She was not able to open the door, when hotel staff managed to open it, they saw the man hanging in the room. The deceased was identified as Anil Kumar (35). The police also found intoxicating pills in his pocket. The gang had been stealing batteries from e-rickshaws and had committed a theft at the erickshaw workshop near the cancer hospital here in city. The suspect has been identified as Mohd Sabir Ali Khan, a native of Agra and at present staying in the Pipal chowk area, and Mukesh, a native of UP and a resident of New Azad Nagar here. Car driver rams vehicle into 3, one dies; kin allege murder Tribune News Service Ludhiana, August 17 A tragic incident occurred on Friday night at Chakli Manga village in Machhiwara when a man, along with his three accomplices, rammed his car into three motorcycle-borne persons. One of the victims, identified as Kulwinder Singh (38), died while his two cousins, Sohan Singh and Manmohan Singh, suffered injuries. The suspects fled after the incident. Kulwinder, who was married and had two children, was working as a manager in some financial firm. When the injured were taken to a hospital in Samrala, Kulwinder was declared brought dead while the two others were referred to the PGI, Chandigarh. One of the injured alleged that Malkit, alias Mantri, a resident of Chakli Manga, was into drug smuggling and he also had a drug case regis- tered against him. The suspect was accompanied by his brother Sonu and two others. On Saturday, kin of the victims staged a dharna outside the Machhiwara police station, seeking strict action against the suspects. They alleged that Malkit rammed the car into Kulwinder as he used to stop them from selling drugs. They held a protest for two hours and lifted the same after the police assured them that the suspects would be nabbed and a murder case would be registered against them. Their kin alleged that an ASI came to the house of Kulwinder yesterday in an inebriated state and told family members of the deceased that they should not mess with Malkit and his accomplices. The policeman also misbehaved with the family. Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), Samrala, Tarlochan Singh, said the incident occurred on Friday night after a tiff between Rajwinder and Malkit as the latter was not giving way to the former’s car. After arguments, Rajwinder called Kulwinder and his two cousins for help. “As Kulwinder and his cousins Sohan and Manmohan came to Chakli Manga village on a motorcycle, Malkit, who was under the influence of alcohol, rammed his car into the trio. As Sohan and Manmohan suffered serious injuries while Kulwinder was mowed down by the car. After mowing down him, Malkit again reversed the car and crushed Kulwinder again, which led to his death,” the DSP said. He said a case of murder was registered against Malkit, his brother and two unidentified persons. Police teams were conducting raids to nab the culprits. The DSP said he recommended suspension of the ASI, Sanjiv Kumar, who misbehaved with the family of Kulwinder. City travel firm faces four FIRs for duping residents of ~49.5L Ludhiana, August 17 The Ludhiana police have registered four cases against citybased West Way Immigration firm situated in Feroze Gandhi Market here for duping residents of Rs 49.50 lakh. The suspects were identified as Manish Kumar and Dhanwant Singh. The cases were registered on the charges of fraud, forgery and criminal conspiracy against the firm. The first case was regis- tered on the complaint of Ravi Kumar of Karabara, who alleged that the suspects had promised to send his family abroad and in lieu, they had taken Rs 21 lakh from him. Another complainant, Pawandeep Kaur, of Dashmesh Nagar said the agents had taken Rs 10 lakh from her to send herself and her husband abroad. The third case was registered on the complaint of Kiranpreet Kaur of Dasuya, Hoshiarpur. She said the duo had taken Rs 8.50 lakh to send herself and her spouse to America but after taking the money, the suspects failed to arrange a visa. The fourth case was registered on the complaint of Sukhbir Kaur of Sangrur. She alleged that the suspects had taken Rs 10 lakh from her to arrange a visa for the UK but failed to send her to that country. — TNS
