PHOTO: ASHWANI DHIMAN Major fire breaks out in hosiery unit; machinery, stock gutted Tribune News Service Ludhiana, August 18 A major fire broke out in a hosiery situated in Saidan Wala Gate here this afternoon where goods and machinery worth lakhs of rupees gutted. The owner of Sea King Knitwears, Munish Kumar, said due to Sunday, the factory was closed today but he was present in his office. In the afternoon when the rain started, he locked the unit and left for his residence. When he reached near his house, he got a call from someone who informed him that smoke was billowing out from the second floor of the factory. When he reached the place, the entire ground floor and the two floors of the building were already engulfed by the blaze. He managed to take some office documents but could not save machinery and stock. Fire tenders had also reached the factory for dousing the flames. The owner said a spark was noticed in the power transformer by his neighbour, following which a short-circuit seemed to have occurred in his factory which took the shape of a major fire. When asked about the losses, the factory owner said now, they could not ascertain the exact losses, it could be in lakhs of rupees. The suspect was arrested by the police. He was identified as Ramesh Lal, alias Guddu, a native of Jammu and resident of Inder Vihar colony. The complainant, the mother of the victim, told the police that on August 16, her daughter was playing outside the house with children. After sometime, the girl went missing. She, along with her sister-in-law, started searching for her but in vain. “Later I saw my daughter was coming out from the house of our neighbour Guddu. When I asked her why she went there, she said he took her to his house on the pretext of giving her a packet of chips. The suspect also touched private body parts of the victim but she escaped from the place,” she said. He said the man was crossing the road on foot. The deceased saw the truck but unfortunately he failed to notice the speeding bullet motorcycle coming behind the truck which rammed into him. The victim fell on the road and suffered serious injuries. He was taken to the Civil Hospital but doctors declared him dead on arrival. Shyam’s friend Govind said the victim works with him in a factory. His entire family lives in Darjeeling. He was survived by his parents, wife and a five-year-old son. — TNS City petrol stations remain shut in protest, motorists face inconvenience Ludhiana, August 18 Petrol pumps in Ludhiana remained shut today as fuel dealers had recently announced to close these on Sundays from August 18 in protest. They had been demanding increase in their commission. They rued that the commission had not been increased by the Central Government and oil companies for the past eight years. As the Petrol Pump Dealers’ Association here had decided to shut fuel stations every Sunday, starting from August 18, the majority of the pumps were closed today. Consumers who were unaware of the decision of the dealers had to return empty handed from such stations. He was arrested by the police. The suspect was identified as Mohd Aslam, alias Danish, a resident of the migrants’ vehra in Kasabad. A case was registered against him. The complainant, the victim’s mother, told the Body found in Buddha Nullah Ludhiana, August 18 A body of a man was found floating in the Buddha Nullah on the Tajpur road on Sunday morning. The condition of the body was so bad that even the face of the deceased could not be recognised. It seemed that the victim had been lying dead in the drain for the past several days. After seeing the body, passers-by raised the alarm and informed the police. After getting information, the police reached the spot and took out the body from the drain with the help of divers. The police said it seems that the man had died around five days ago. GRP team on way to nab drug case suspect attacked Tribune News Service Ludhiana, August 18 A team of the Government Railway Police (GRP), Ludhiana, was attacked when it went to arrest a man wanted in a drug smuggling case. SHO, GRP Ludhiana, Inspec, tor Jatinder Singh, was leading the team. The complainant, inspector Jatinder Singh, in a statement to the Police Division 3 stated that on August 15, in connection with a drug smuggling case registered in July this year, he, along with the police team, had gone to arrest Rajinder Kumar, alias Neeta. As it reached the suspect’s house in Narinder Nagar near Samrala Chowk, the suspect along with over 12 persons misbehaved with the GRP officials and attacked them. Since several suspects had cornered the GRP personnel, Rajinder managed to flee the house. However, the police managed to chase him.
