Woman shot dead, two injured over trivial issue at Basarke Bhaini Amritsar, August 20 A woman was shot dead and two other members of her family were injured in a dispute that occurred between two families at Basarke Bhaini village here on Monday night. The deceased has been identified as Amarjeet Kaur while her husband Balwinder Singh received bullet injuries. A 9-year-old girl in the family was also injured in the clash. Later, the police claimed to have arrested one of the key accused, Sheru. The kin of the victim family stated that children of two families of Balwinder Singh and Lakhwinder Singh, respectively, fought with each other in the street. To settle a score with Balwinder Singh, the accused, Lakhwinder Singh, barged into the victim’s house along with Arjun Singh, Sajjan Singh, Manna Singh, Sheru, Sunny, Jajbir Singh, Sonu, Love and Dilbag Singh of the same village. The accused were armed with pistols and other sharp-edged weapons. Initially, attackers fired gunshots in the air and abused the family members of Balwinder Singh. When Balwinder tried to snatch the pistol, the accused fired at him. Amarjit Kaur got seriously injured in the attack. The attackers also used sharpedged weapons against the family of Balwinder. Amarjit Kaur, Balwinder Singh and daughter were injured in the incident. They were rushed to a private hospital where Amarjit Kaur was declared dead. The Gharinda police have registered a case against 10 suspects while the main accused, Sheru, has been arrested. Karampal Singh, SHO, Gharinda police station, said, “The clash happened over a trivial issue leading to the death of a woman. We have registered a case under relevant sections against 10 suspects and raids are being conducted to arrest the accused persons.” Meanwhile, residents of Basarke Bhaini village claimed that attackers smuggle drugs in the village and have links with bad elements. — TNS Amritsar, August 20 Under the state-level special cleanliness campaign started by the Punjab Government, Amritsar Municipal Corporation Commissioner Harpreet Singh along with a team of officials and employees launched a sanitation drive on Majitha Road here on Tuesday. MC Commissioner Harpreet Singh said a weeklong special cleanliness campaign has been started by the Punjab Government for Swachh Punjab. He said the municipal corporation needed cooperation from the gen- eral public in making the city neat and clean. The participation of city residents is important for proper cleanliness. He said people will also be made aware under the cleanliness campaign every day by the Sanitation Department of the civic body. Teams of senior officials and employees of the municipal corporation will work together during the campaign in all five zones of the city. The farmers had gathered at the railway station under the banner of Kisan Mazdoor Sangharsh Committee (KMSC). The union is working to increase the participation of farmers in the protest being held by Kisan Mazdoor Morcha and Sanyukat Kisan Morcha (Non-political). The KMM and SKM (Nonpolitical) also have plans to organise big rallies at Shambu, Khanauri and Ratanpura on August 31 to mark 200 days of the ongoing protest. KMSC general secretary Sarwan Singh Pandher said, “Farmers from across the state would leave for Haryana borders on August 30 to participate in the rallies on August 31.” The union has already started to hold meetings in different villages to mobilise support for the rallies. Farmer leaders stated that people are fed up with the attitude of the government and are in a mood to hold a long protest. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi, when he was the chief minister of Gujarat, had been writing letters to the then PM Manmohan Singh demanding implementation of Dr Swaminathan Commission report. Now he is the PM for the last 11 years and doing everything not to implement the report.” Pandher said that under the Modi-led government’s rule at the Centre, shots were fired at farmers and they were killed as they were demanding MSP “The . farmers have been mowed down under the vehicles, subjected to illegal arrests and harassment just because they are asking for MSP,” he said, adding that farmers would continue their protest till their demands are met. The protesters are also demanding debt waiver for farmers and workers, guarantee of a minimum of 200 days of work under MGNREGA, increase in per day wages under MGNREGA, pension for elderly farmers, and implementation of crop insurance scheme.
