Nearby shopkeepers and a man standing at the shop had a narrow escape in the firing incident. Harsimran Singh, a resident of Kuralia village, told the police that he was a farmer by profession. Harsimran said yesterday, he went to a welding shop of Kanwaljit Singh located in the Ramdass area. He said around 6.30 pm, two unknown suspects arrived at the shop on a bike and started firing. They fired around three shots and later fled from the spot on their motorcycle. The police have registered a case under Sections 109 and 3 (5) of the BNS and the Arms Act against unidentified miscreants and initiated probe in this connection. Clear last year’s stock from rice mills, say arhtiyas Tarn Taran, August 22 The district branch of the Federation of Arhtiya Association, Punjab, has demanded the early lifting of last year’s rice stock stored in mills as the paddy season is going to start soon. Kulbir Singh Kasel, district president of the arhtiya association, said in a statement here today that in Tarn Taran, the paddy season usually started early than at other places and the crop arrival was expected any time. He said rice millers of the district had already announced not to store paddy of the present season in their mills as these were occupied with last year stocks which had not been shifted to godowns till date. He said the present situation was critical for farmers and commission agents (Arhtiyas) due to the possible glut of paddy on its arrival. Kasel demanded the early lifting (shifting) of last year’s rice stock lying in mills to make space for the new arrival. He said the state and the Central Governments must take the matter seriously to avoid any trouble to farmers and arhtiyas. — OC PK Jaiswar Tribune News Service Amritsar, August 22 The traffic police today tightened the noose around underage drivers and issued challans to around six schoolchildren for committing the offence. Now, parents of these children would have to appear before the court and face the law. Though many teenagers have a learning licence, they drive vehicles which are not permitted as per the Motor Vehicles Act. Parents complained that agents, who helped them get learning licence for their children, mislead them by telling that their wards could drive vehicles with gears. “Despite the fact that the traffic police extended the deadline for enforcing the underage driving rules by 20 days, students continue to flout the norms. Teams of the city police traffic wing have met parents, teachers and interacted with students, but the latter are not ready to mend their ways,” said Harpal Singh, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP), Traffic. The ADCP clarified that children between 16 and 18 years of age could only drive low speed e-vehicles. High speed e-vehicles were those for which registration certificate was issued with a green number plate, he said. Children less than 18 years of age were not allowed to drive even normal scooters and twowheelers which had above 110CC engines, he said. “We urge residents to follow the traffic norms in letter and spirit. The traffic police will not spare offenders in the future,” the ADCP said. Health Department collects samples of food in Ajnala Amritsar, August 22 The food wing of the District Health Department collected samples from a ‘bhatura’ stall in Ajnala after receiving complaints regarding its quality of food from residents. Assistant Food Commissioner Rajwinder Pal Singh said a team collected samples of ‘bhatura’ sold at the stall and ‘maida’ used in its preparation. Singh said during monsoon, small inspects were found in food ingredients. Amritsar, August 22 Two suspects identified as Hardev Singh and Robin Singh, both residents of Attari, who were arrested by the rural police yesterday with Glock pistol smuggled from Pakistan, were today produced in a local court which sent them to two-day police remand for further interrogation. A preliminary investigaion revealed that Glock pistol with mark 26 Gen Austria 9x19 was smuggled from Pakistan. Charanjit Singh, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Amritsar (Rural) said, “The police are probing into the suspects links with Pakistan based anti-national entities.” The pistol was smuggled from Pakistan through a drone, the SSP said. Police party attacked at school in Asal Uttar village, 11 booked Our Correspondent Tarn Taran, August 22 A police party from Valtoha was attacked at a government school in Asal Uttar village on Wednesday when it had gone to check mischievous elements indulging in teasing girl students of the school. ASI Avtar Singh said Tarlochan Singh, former sarpanch of the village, informed the police about hooliganism created by suspects armed with sticks and sharp weapons on the school premises. After receiving complaint, a police party from Valtoha reached the school. Head constable Sandeep Singh, who was accompanying the police party, started pushing out mischievous elements from the school premises to prevent any untoward incident. While Sandeep was doing his duty, mischievous suspects attacked him, tore his uniform and also entered into a scuffle with him. ASI Avtar Singh said the suspects, who indulged in hooliganism on the school premises and attacked head constable, were identified as Akashdeep Singh Kashi, Avtar Singh Tar, Partap Singh, Tabu, Bagicha Singh, Lovpreet Singh Ful- lu, Janta, Gurdev Singh, Daler Singh, Basant Singh and Bittu Ram, all residents of Asal Uttar village. The ASI said the suspects were booked under Sections 221, 132, 121 (1), 190 and 191 (3) of the BNS at the Valtoha police station. Panic among residents after district reports 5 snatching cases in 3 days Tribune News Service THE INCIDENTS Amritsar, August 22 Frequent snatching incidents have become a problem for the Police Department which has failed to check such crime in the district. In the last three days, the rural belt of Amritsar reported at least five cases of snatching. A restaurant and a grocery store owner were among those looted by armed miscreants. Robbers decamped with cash, mobile phones and vehicles from the victims in areas falling under the Jandiala, Chatiwind, Rajasansi, Kathunangal and Majitha police stations. Sukhpal Singh, a resident of Majitha, who runs a restaurant — Hello — located on Saran Road in Jandiala said his manager Ranjit Singh called him on Monday night and told him that three armed persons came to his restaurant and looted Rs 32,000 and two mobile phones at gunpoint. In a similar incident, armed miscreants looted Rs 20,000 in cash. The suspects also fired a gunshot while fleeing after committing the crime. Magdeep Singh, a resident of Tarn Taran Road, stated to the police that he runs a grocery store and a dhaba. On Tuesday night, two bike-borne persons came to his shop and pointed a pistol at him. ■ Three armed persons went to a restaurant in Jandiala and looted ~32,000 and two mobile phones at gunpoint ■ Two armed bike-borne miscreants looted ~20,000 from shop in Tarn Taran. They also fired a gunshot while fleeing ■ In the Rajasansi area, armed suspects snatched a cellphone and a purse that contained ~6,200 and important documents from a resident ■ Two bike-borne persons snatched a scooter bearing registration No. PB-06-AQ-6034 from Kadranbad village resident ■ Two bike-borne persons snatched ~10,000 and a mobile phone from a resident in Majitha They took away Rs 20,000 which was kept in the cash box at his shop. Later, they fled towards Varpal after opening fire at the victim's shop. In the Rajasansi area, armed suspects snatched a mobile phone and a purse from Lovepreet Singh, a resident of Rajasansi. The victim was having tea in a street with his friend Daljit Singh when three suspects with covered faces arrived there on a scooter. Lovepreet told the police that the suspects pointed a pistol at him. He said the suspects took away his purse that contained Rs 6,200 in cash and other important documents, including identity cards. The unknown miscreants fled from the spot after firing shots into the air, the victim said. In another incident, Sumanpreet Kaur, a resident of Kadranbad village, told the Kathunangal police that yesterday she was going towards Fattubhila village when two bike-borne persons snatched her scooter bearing registra- tion number PB-06-AQ-6034. In the fifth incident, two bike-borne persons snatched Rs 10,000 and a mobile phone from Vijaydeep Singh, a resident of Nag Khurd village at Majitha. He was returning from Shahpur village in Dera Baba Nanak to his native village on his motorcycle when the incident happened. The police have arrested one of the suspects, identified as Sultan Singh, in this connection while his accomplice Harwinder Singh, a resident of Nag Kalan village, is on the run. The incident occurred on the night of August 16 while a case was registered on Wednesday. When contacted, Charanjit Singh, SSP Amritsar (Rur, al), said the police had cracked majority of such cases by identifying suspects. He said efforts were on to nab suspects involved in snatching incidents. The SSP said he had instructed police stations to register FIR for all snatching cases reported in the district.
