For upgrading the education system in Punjab, several new models are being adopted by the government. These include ‘Schools of Eminence’, ‘Schools of Happiness’ etc. Sadly, filling up the vacancies in government schools as well as senior secondary schools seems to be last in the priority list of AAP government. The data shows that in Ludhiana alone, there are approximately 400 vacancies of lecturers in the senior secondary schools, which 400 SEATS VACANT The data shows that in Ludhiana alone, there are approximately 400 vacancies of lecturers in the senior secondary schools, which need to be filled up. In the absence of subject teachers in senior secondary classes, thousands of school students suffer in the Board exams. Stop-gap arrangements are being made by the Education Department in many schools due to which the quality of education is certainly suffering and it gets reflected in the final Board results of students, as those from private schools perform much better than their counterparts in government schools. The data (a copy of which is with The Tribune) shows that there is an acute shortage of lecturers in government senior secondary schools. The students studying English, Maths, social science, Punjabi etc. suffer as there are no permanent subject teachers available. “For example, in government senior secondary schools, there is an acute shortage of commerce lecturers. The figures till 2023 showed that there was a vacancy of approximately 20 commerce lecturers in the same school. Commerce teachers are needed in many other senior secondary schools too. Because of insufficient number of teachers, students are reluctant to choose commerce stream in many schools,” said one of the teachers at GSSS, Jawahar Nagar Camp, here. The press secretary of Government School Teachers Union Tehel Singh said that there were about 7,000 vacancies of lecturers in the schools. “Recently, after eight years, the department has given promotions and we hope that 2,000 posts of lecturers will be filled all over Punjab. Still, there would be a shortage of approximately 5,000 lecturers, which should also be filled up as soon as possible if quality education is to be provided to students,” said Singh. c m y b 6th Sep - 15th Sep, 2024 Miscreants open fire on father, son Ludhiana, September 10 Two bike-borne miscreants opened fire on a father-son duo near Dholan village in Jagraon on the intervening night of September 8 and 9. Both had been returning to Rumi village after serving langar in the hospitals of Jagraon and surrounding areas of the region. Fortunately, they didn’t suffer bullet injury and escaped unhurt. Complainant Jaswinder Singh said they run an organisation named Ekta Welfare Trust and daily go to different hospitals of Ludhiana, Moga and Jagraon and serve langar, distribute clothes and books etc. among the patients. On September 8, he was returning in the evening after distributing langar in hospitals. On the way, his vehicle broke down. He called his brother Arshdeep for help. His brother and father Jugraj picked him up and left the damaged vehicle with the mechanic for repair. They then drove towards their home in Rumi village. When they reached near Dholan village, two bike riders attacked the vehicle with a baseball bat and broke the glass, added the complainant. He alleged that after this, the accused stopped the bike a little ahead of the car and started firing indiscriminately at their vehicle. When he stopped his car, the attackers fled towards Raikot.
