OC Youth enters house, snatches phone from injured man Tribune News Service Jalandhar, September 11 In a daring daylight snatching, two bike-borne miscreants snatched a phone from a man sitting inside his house in Tara Singh Avenue, Basti Bawa Khel. The incident, which took place on Monday afternoon, only gained attention when a CCTV footage went viral, showing how the snatchers carefully planned the crime after conducting a recce of the area. The victim, who had recently undergone surgery for a broken leg, was sitting in his veranda when the snatchers entered. His limited mobility, due to surgery, made him an easy target for the criminals. The CCTV footage reveals that the snatchers first approached the victim under the guise of enquiring about his well-being before leaving. They returned again and during the third visit, one of the men entered the house on foot while the other waited outside on a bike. The one inside quickly snatched the victim’s phone and fled, with his accomplice readying for a swift getaway. Despite the victim’s son’s attempt to chase them, they managed to escape. The police from Basti Bawa Khel are investigating the case and analysing the CCTV footage to identify the suspects. — TNS CAN’T AFFORD A RETURN TICKET ❞ Villagers pass a resolution to oppose the cement plant in their area on Wednesday. Villagers oppose proposed cement unit in ‘public hearing’ Threaten to start protest if decision not revoked in month Sanjiv Kumar Bakshi Kirandeep Kaur, HOSHIARPUR RESIDENT Deepkamal Kaur Tribune News Service Jalandhar, September 11 Just five months since the Adampur domestic airport has become functional and Star Air started flights on the AdampurHindon-Nanded circuit, the viability of the flight has started becoming a major issue. While initially the response to the flight remained good with the 76-seater Embraer plane going to almost full capacity, the bookings have started falling with half of the seats remaining unoccupied. People of the region have been claiming that since the airfare is too high, only the upper class families can afford it. “We too intend to go to Nanded Sahib around October holidays, but cannot afford to and fro fare for our family of four. The one-way ticket charges vary between Rs 9,000-Rs 10,000. If we all are to go and return by air, we will end up spending Rs 80,000 only on travel which we can’t afford,” said Kirandeep Kaur, a Hoshiarpur resident. For many like her, train travel is far cheaper even though it takes a much time. “There is a daily train facility from Jalandhar to Nanded Sahib. Though it takes 32 hours to reach the destination, it is much more affordable, especially if the entire family is to go there. The second AC ticket charges are close to Rs 2,000 for one side. So, the cost comes down five times, even though the travel time increases by three days”, said Gurinder Singh, a schoolteacher in Jalandhar. According to Jalandhar Congress MP Charanjit Singh Channi, a bigger problem with the flight is the fact that it connects Jalandhar with Hindon first before proceeding to Nanded. “Flyers from Jalandhar would like to land at IGI Airport, Delhi, instead of going towards Hindon in Ghaziabad. I will write to the Civil Aviation Ministry soon to cor- rect the circuit and make the flight from here land at IGI Airport. More flights can be added for Bengaluru and Srinagar as per the demand of the Doaba people”, he said. Siddhartha Sharma, a business leader from Jalandhar, said, “I have been off and on going to Delhi for my work. About three years ago, when the Adampur airport was connected with Delhi, I was a frequent flyer. Hindon becomes off route for many like me. So, these days my first preference is to take Vande Bharat train by which I land in Delhi at 1:30 pm. On days when I have to reach the capital early in the day, I prefer Shatabdi.” Saila Khurd, September 11 On the invitation of the Environmental Struggle Committee, a programme of ‘actual public hearing’ was organised today by people of the area regarding the industrial unit proposed by Ambuja Cement on the land of Raniyala, Sardullapur and Baddoyan villages in Garhshankar. It passed a unanimous resolution demanding from the government that the proposed unit should not be allowed as cement pollution was deadly. In a resolution passed in the presence of tehsildar, Garhshankar, it was also said the health was more important and the unit should not be started at the risk of their life. The proposed unit was to be installed on an agricultural land where a pipeline was laid for irrigation. The cement unit here will not only damage the crops, but also destroy orchards. The villagers said they would agree with every decision of the committee’. Will inform govt: Tehsildar Naib Tehsildar Jagpal Singh of Garhshankar, who attended the ‘actual public hearing’ as the government’s representative, assured them that he would inform the government of the resolutions passed in his presence. 2 arrested for assaulting, robbing e-rickshaw owner Now, scan QR code Tribune News Service Jalandhar, September 11 The city police have arrested two suspects involved in a robbery case.
