A large number of private vehicles can be seen parked on government land in several areas, including Sectors 35, 21, 34, 17 and 52. The owners of these vehicles, including buses of schools, private hospitals, tourist transporters and other institutions, continue to have a free run in the absence of any check by the MC or the TU Administration. They are supposed to take permission for parking vehicles on government land and pay a fee. The authorities had challaned a few vehicles but failed to make sincere efforts to curb this illegal practice. A place has been designated for the parking of private buses near the Fun Republic mall in Mani Majra. A few years ago, the civic body conducted a survey of private buses, including those of schools and tourist vehicles, and identified 400-500 vehicles in the city. It was aimed at making the owners of such vehicles pay commercial parking charges. However, nothing much was done beyond the survey. “Most bus operators do pay charges, but not to the government. Someone else is collecting money for this illegal parking. This is height of corruption. This practice should stop as it causes not only loss of revenue to the administration but also creates insanitary conditions around the place where the vehicles are parked,” said RK Garg, president of Second Innings Association, a senior citizens’ body. Local residents said AC-bus operators earned big time and they should be made to pay the government fee. They demanded a proper system should be implemented to check this illegal practice. Chandigarh, September 15 Visitors to the fruit, vegetable and grain market in Sector 26 were a harried lot as the whole area was full of slush. Pedestrians as well as motorists faced a tough time making their way through slushy roads and paths. Big potholes filled with rainwater aggravated their trouble. Almost all entry/exit points are riddled with big potholes. Since cleaning is not done properly in the market, roads remains strewn with garbage. It takes the form of slush after the rain, and roads become slippery. Several riders suffered injuries as their bikes skidded on the slippery roads. Buying vegetables and fruit under such hygienic condition also raises health concerns. “No cleaning is done here. Only a part of the area is cleaned sometimes,” said a vendor. Shopkeepers and vendors said the place, which was one of the biggest trade centre of the city, was in ruins. They demanded staff responsible for cleaning should be held accountable and renovation done without further delay. Chandigarh, September 15 The fraudsters, who were arrested last month by the Cyber Crime Investigation Cell (CCIC) for opening mule accounts, have been found to be allegedly involved in 1,713 cheating incidents and 60 FIRs registered across the country. The CCIC had received a tip-off in August that two individuals staying at Hotel Friends in Sector 52 were asking people to open bank accounts and offering them a commission of Rs 10,000. Acting on this information, the two suspects, identified as Devender Kumar Yadav and Sankar Suvan Shukla, also known as Abhay Shukla, both from Uttar Pradesh, were arrested. Another accused, Ankit Jain, a Delhi resident, was also apprehended for selling these mule accounts to handlers based in Dubai. Following the arrests, the police shared the information with the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, a centralised portal for cybercrime. According to the police, the subsequent analysis of mobile phone IMEI numbers used by the accused revealed their involvement in 1,713 cyber fraud incidents across India. A police official said 60 FIRs were also registered in the fraud cases, involving the same mobile phone IMEI numbers. The police had recently submitted this information to the court while opposing the bail of 60 FIRs REGISTERED ACROSS COUNTRY According to the police, mobile phone IMEI numbers used by the accused revealed their involvement in 1,713 cyber fraud incidents across India. The investigation carried out by the police had revealed that around 700 bank accounts had been opened by the accused, of which 100 were frozen. People, who used to provide documents for opening these bank accounts, were from economically weaker sections. They were unaware that their accounts could be misused for siphoning off money obtained through cybercrime. Cyber sleuths had arrested an official of Indian Bank, Sector 17, who had allegedly opened the accounts without conducting a proper check, and also a hotel manager for not making entry of Devender and Shankar’s stay at the hotel. It is a classic example of wastage of public money and loss of revenue. Faulty design to blame for waterlogging on underpass: Residents The only shop operational at the underpass was auctioned for Rs 80 lakh. This shop, too, remains closed during rain as water gets accumulated on the underpass and visitors avoid using it. However, three vendors operating on the overbridge do a good business. The underpass was constructed at a huge cost to connect the two phases of the garden in 2019. There are no buyers for the shops, apparently due to a bad condition of the underpass. When the underpass was being constructed, the road had been closed for a long c m y b The waterlogged Terraced Garden underpass in Sector 33 after rain on Sunday.
