In the afternoon, the angry students blocked the traffic by staging a sit-in on road. On receiving information about the protest, the police deployed a large number of personnel in front of the college. He said on Wednesday, the college students informed him that Aashiq had consumed some poison- Inter-district extortion gang busted, 6 nabbed Tribune News Service Jalandhar, October 10 The Jalandhar Rural police have dismantled an inter-district extortion racket with the arrest of six persons involving in blackmailing and extorting money from innocent people. The arrested accused have been identified as Jobanpreet Singh of Channanwindi, Rajesh Kumar, alias Sunny, of Dhandowal, Jaskaran Gill, alias Jassa, of Saidpur Jhri, Barjesh Kumar, alias Meshi, of Sandhawal, Buta Singh, alias Buta, of Balmik Mohalla Talwan, and Barkha of Mehrajwala. The accused had been operating across several districts, targeting people involved in scams. Speaking to mediapersons, Senior Superintendent of Police, Jalandhar Rural, Harkamal Preet Singh Khakh, said the arrests were made following a coordinated operation led by SHO, Shahkot Police Station, under the supervision of DSP Onkar Singh Brar and SP investiga, tion, Jagroop Kaur Bath. The operation was initiated after a complaint from Narinder Singh, a 65-year-old shopkeeper from Sultanpur Lodhi. Narinder Singh was reportedly being lured to a location in Saidpur Jhri on the pretext of providing labour for his business, only to be victimised by the gang. They accused him of a false crime, assaulted him and demanded Rs 5 lakh, threatening to ruin his reputation with fabricated charges. They forcibly took Rs 15,000, multiple ATM cards, and made video recordings of the assault to intensify their threats. The gang’s modus operandi was to lure victims to isolated locations, fabricating false criminal accusations and then extorting money through intimidation and blackmail. Police investigations revealed that the group had been operating across district lines, exploiting their victims using similar tactics. After raiding multiple locations, police were able to apprehend the six members of this inter-district gang. A case was registered at Shahkot police station on October 5 under various sections, including extortion, assault and criminal conspiracy. Further investigation revealed that the gang had extorted significant amounts from other victims across districts, using the same modus operandi. The accused will be produced in a local court, where the police will seek their remand for further interrogation. He emphasised that the district administration had made comprehensive arrangements to ensure fair poll. — TNS Hoshiarpur, October 10 A loud explosion took place in the Mohalla Prahlad Nagar area of the city on Thursday morning, shattering the windowpanes of houses and vehicles parked nearby. Four youths sustained injuries in the incident. These youths were preparing an idol of a deity and lit a firecracker. Sparks fell into the bag that contained crackers. The bag was being held by a youth accompanying them. The crackers in the bag caught fire and there was a huge explosion. The bag is said to have contained around 200 crackers which exploded simultaneously. After the explosion, a cloud of smoke rose. Two youths were seriously injured in the blast, one of whom suffered injury in his hands and the other in ear. Two others sustained minor injuries. They were immediately taken to the Civil Hospital, from where they were referred to a private hospital due to their critical condition. Officials of the district administration reached the spot to assess the situation. AAP leader Brahmshankar Jimpa and former minister Sunder Sham Arora visited the hospital to enquire about the condition of the injured. A brutal attack on the family of ex-serviceman Balwinder Singh in Pipli had taken place on August 3 and the police had arrested 10 persons on August 29. The investigation had revealed that the attack was allegedly orchestrated by two NRI brothers, Dara Singh and Darbara Singh, both belonged to Talwandi Butian and residing in England. The brothers hired local gangster Amandeep Singh Amna to carry out the attack with the motive of forcibly occupying land, which, they claimed, they had bought. Gobind Nagar residents pool money to clean up garbage dump Avneet Kaur Tribune News Service Jalandhar, October 10 Amid growing frustration over a massive garbage dump in Gobind Nagar, residents took matters into their own hands after repeated complaints to the Municipal Corporation (MC) were ignored. The Gobind Nagar Youth Welfare Society decided to tackle the problem themselves, citing the MC’s little help despite several requests and complaints. The dump, which had been left unattended for over five years, had become a health hazard for residents. The foul smell and unsanitary conditions had made daily life unbearable. “We kept filing complaints, but nothing was done,” said one of the residents, adding that they had no choice but to handle it ourselves. With no response from the local authorities, the youth from the Welfare Society pooled money and got the dump cleared. Led by Deepak Luthra, president of the society, and supported by members, including Vasu Chhiber, Nitin Arora, Talwinder Suhi, Rajat Chohan, Umang Sharma, Ishaan Arora, Gaurav Arora, Nitish Dalmotra and Tajinder Singh, the group took swift action to address the longstanding issue. “This is not our responsibility, but we couldn’t wait any longer. It was a risk to everyone’s health”, said one of the c m y b members. Once the area was cleared, the residents took additional measures to ensure that it remained clean. They pitched a tent and a banner at the site, warning that anyone caught dumping garbage would face a Rs 1,000 fine. This self-imposed penalty was designed to deter people from littering and keep the area clean. Deepak Luthra revealed that while some MC officials did help, the dump was so occupants, vandalised property and looted valuables, including a tractor, gold ornaments and cash. SSP Harkamal Preet Singh Khakh said the arrests were made by a special police team. He said the police were on the lookout for over 30 more accused in the case. Jagir Singh of village Shahabuddin, told the police that Gurinder Singh of Kharar, allegedly cheated him of Rs 9 lakh in the name of sending him to New Zealand.
