The move is seen as part of the country’s attempt to address ongoing housing shortages and resource strain. In a statement, the Canadian government, however, said the policy had been discontinued JOLT FOR THOUSANDS OF INT’L PUPILS ■ Unveiled in 2018, student direct stream offered study permit to applicants from 14 countries, including India and Pak ■ It provided faster permit approvals, often within weeks, to “strengthen programme integrity, address student vulnerability, and give all students equal and fair access to the application process”. Launched in 2018, the student direct stream (SDS) was compared to standard process that took eight to 12 weeks ■ In 2023, 73% applications of Indians were approved under the SDS as against 10% in case of non-SDS applicants designed to streamline the study permit process for applicants from 14 countries, including India, China, Pakistan and the Philippines, who met specific criteria. The programme, popular among international students, provided faster permit approvals, often within weeks, compared to the standard process. The SDS visa application usually takes three to four weeks to process if all conditions are met, as opposed to eight to 12 weeks or even longer if the normal process is followed. The success rate of the normal process is poor. Now, Maharashtra should follow suit,” Modi said, renewing his attack on the Congress, which has been leading the demand for a caste census. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi hailed the move and said PM Narendra Modi “wanted to stop the caste census”. “The caste census started in Telangana today. We will use the data obtained from this to frame policies for the growth of all sections of the state. Soon, this will happen in Maharashtra too. Everyone knows that the BJP does not want to hold a caste census in the country,” Rahul said. He said the PM “cannot stop the caste census across the country”. “We will pass this in Parliament and break the 50 per cent wall on reservation,” Rahul said. The Tribune, the largest selling daily in North India, publishes news and views without any bias or prejudice of any kind. Restraint and moderation, rather than agitational language and partisanship, are the hallmarks of the paper. It is an independent newspaper in the real sense of the term.
The English edition apart, the 133-year-old Tribune has two sister publications, Punjabi Tribune (in Punjabi) and Dainik Tribune (in Hindi).
