Narrow streets and roads of centuries-old town witness encroachments by shopkeepers, vendors and haphazardly parked vehicles by residents. Even electric poles and transformers are proving to be a hurdle in the movement of traffic in some areas. The road which links GT road with Khadoor Sahib is the main road along which the local bus stand, Mohalla Clinic, Suvidha Centre, Jandiala municipal council office, schools, college and bank are located. Owing to heavy traffic and encroachments, residents witness routine traffic jams here. Satbir Singh, a resident of Jandiala, said, “The town needs better traffic management to avoid jams. The Khadoor Sahib road should be one way or heavy traffic should be diverted to alternative roads.” Though the municipal council has provided sewer lines in some areas, sewer water can be seen overflowing from open drains, linked to the main nullah. On difficulties being faced in GST law, traders clearly stated it became extremely difficult for traders to follow the current GST law as its complex rules and constantly changing policies are causing huge problems. The Mandal appealed to the government to review it and implement simple and clear rules. Assembled members of the Mandal demanded abolition of Section 43 BH of Income Tax Act, which they feel an excessive burden for traders. Under this section, they are to bear additional responsibility regarding their tax payment and requested the government to abolish it so that traders can get relief. They expressed concern over the deteriorating law and order situation in the state, they said increasing crime and administrative non-cooperation posed a challenge for them. Streets would be re-carpeted soon. When contacted Harbhajan Singh ETO, MLA from Janidala Guru and PWD and Power Minister on his official contact number, his staff responded that tenders have been floated to install STP to address sewer problems and all other issues would be sorted out. Despite repeated attempts, Harbhajan Singh was not available for comments. The police have arrested a weapon smuggler, identified as Shaganpreet Singh, a resident of the border village of Hardo Rattan. He was arrested from near Gharindi village falling under the Gharinda police station here. Manmeetpal Singh, in charge, CIA staff, said that the accused has links with Pakistan-based crossborder smuggler with pseudo name Rana. The weapons were smuggled with the help of drone. “We got specific information that the accused was involved in trans-border smuggling of drugs and weapons. Following this a naka was put up near Gharindi village and the accused travelling on a bike intercepted. On seeing the police party he tried to flee but was overpowered by police and arrested,” he said. During search the police made the seizure of two Glock pistols. His previous record was being ascertained, he added. He would be produced in the court tomorrow seeking police remand, he said. They said even after an elapse of over 10 days, the police were yet to arrest the suspects who had thrashed two advocate brothers outside their residence located in the posh locality of Ranjit Avenue. The police have registered a case against unknown occupants of the car who fled the scene after people gathered at the spot. As per information, the victims were going from Khalsa College to the Islamabad side on their scooter when a speeding car hit their scooter from the rear. Parkash who was driving the scooter lost the balance and hit the safety walls of the flyover and fell off the bridge. Onlookers immediately rushed them to hospital. The police said on getting information, a police team reached there. “We have registered an FIR against unknown occupants of the car who fled the spot leaving behind the car ,” said Mandeep Kaur, SHO, Gate Hakima police station. — TNS accused thrashed him also. Police arrest woman with illicit liquor Our Correspondent Tarn Taran, November 18 The Harike police led by ASI Tarsem Singh arrested a woman with illicit liquor here on Sunday. The ASI said the woman, identified as Rajbir Kaur of Makhu, was returning after purchasing eight bottles of illicit liquor from Marad village to sell these in the market. The police have registered a case under Sections 61, 1, and 14 of the Excise Act. The woman was later released by the police on bail.
