Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Satnam Singh of the Goindwal Sahib police said the deceased have been identified as Amandeep Singh (35) and Ranjit Singh (40), residents of Chutala village. Both were related to each other and were on way to Goindwal Sahib on a motorcycle. When they reached near Fatehbad village, both met with an accident with some unidentified vehicle. Both received serious injuries on the heads, as a result of which both died on the spot, said the Assistant Sub-Inspector. The victims each had a son and a daughter. The postmortem of the bodies was conducted at the local Civil Hospital on Wednesday and were cremated at the cremation ground of Chutala village, said the Assistant Sub-Inspector. The police have registered a case under Sections 281, 106 and 324 (4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. Amritsar, December 11 With a sharp dip in the temperatures, the state government has announced an early winter break for the schools in the state. With the night temperature hovering around 6 degrees Celsius (as reported on Tuesday) and morning temperatures between 11 and 12 degrees Celsius, cold wave conditions have affected normal life in the city. In a recent notification, it has been said that keeping in view the winter season in all the government, privateaided and recognized schools of Punjab during Only 21 candidates filed nomination papers on Wednesday Tribune News Service the year 2024 from December 24 till 31, this direction is for all government, private-aided and recognised schools of the state. The school timings were earlier revised from 9am to 3pm in November given the onset of winter. Granthi murdered near Rayya Amritsar, December 11 A granthi, identified as Raman Singh, a resident of Mad village, was killed by a man when he was returning home after performing a path at a Baba Bakala shrine. On his way home, when he reached near Rayya on his cycle on late last evening, he was intercepted and attacked by accused Sahib Singh with a datar. He allegedly threw some chilli powder into his eyes and later attacked him with a sharp-edged weapon leaving him critically injured and leading to his death on the spot. — TNS Amritsar, December 11 Even as Thursday is the last day for filing of nominations for elections to the Municipal Corporation, the main political parties are yet to declare their complete list of candidates from the 85 wards here. For the elections scheduled for December 21, only the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has so far announced candidates from all the wards. The ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has also declared a list of candidates from 75 wards. AAP leaders stated that the remaining candidates too would be announced shortly. The Congress too announced a second list of candidates from 35 wards on Wednesday. The Congress had earlier announced its candidates from 37 wards on Tuesday evening. With this, the party has fielded its candidates from 72 wards. The party leadership stated that the names of the candidates from the remaining wards would be finalised today itself. Nearly two months have passed since the panchayats were freshly elected in the state after the polls but the members of Lalu Ghuman village panchayat have been hesitant to even hold their first meeting till date. Village Sarpanch Partap Singh (75) was shot dead by the gangsters on November 17, two days before the oath-taking ceremony for the Sarpanches at a state-level function addressed by AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. Four of the total nine elected members (panches) have been forced to tender resignation from their posts and the others too are being threatened to resign. On the basis of the statement of Baljinder Singh, son of the Sarpanch, a case against eight persons, including two gangsters based abroad, was registered by Chabal police. Jagjit Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Raghbir Singh and Harinderjit Singh, the four panchayat members who have said that they have been receiving threats from gangster Amritpal Singh Bath to resign and were even threatened with being killed, refused to act as per their instructions. Baljinder Singh said that the family is living under great fear as gangster Amritpal Singh Bath was threatening the family against registering a police case against the killing. He said that though the district police have provided the family with two security guards, they have been receiving threats regularly by the gangsters. Baljinder Singh said that of the total eight accused nominated as accused in the case, only one person has been arrested till date and the family was feeling insecure. The elected members of the panchayat have not even convened their first meeting to authorise a Panch, to work on behalf of the Sarpanch, due to threats received from gangsters. Gurmukh Singh, Block Development and Panchayat Officer (BDPO), Tarn Taran, when contacted, first denied that any member of Lalu Ghuman village panchayat had resigned but at the same time, called this correspondent to his office to tell the reality. He said that the Sarpanch was shot dead and the panchayat is yet to start its working. Kamalmeet Singh, DSP Tarn Taran, said , that the police was conducting raids to arrest the other accused in the case but they were absconding and their houses were locked. Amritsar, December 11 The Lopoke police have arrested two persons on a charge of murder bid. They were identified as Kuldeep Singh, alias Kola, and his son Dilraj Singh, both residents of Khiala Kalan village. Massa Singh, a resident of Guru Har Rai Avenue, alleged that on Monday late evening, he was returning home after meeting his brother-in-law Dilbagh Singh at Khiala Kalan village via the Khasa road when an SUV came from the opposite side and intercepted his car. He alleged Dilraj Singh came out of the SUV and fired two gunshots at his car which hit the front glass of the car. He said in order to save himself, he came out of the car and fled towards the fields. He said the accused ran away from the spot while shouting and threatening to kill him. Two accused in custody of the Amritsar Rural Police on Wednesday. The police said taking a prompt action in the case, the police nabbed the two accused and registered a case of attempt to murder and under the Arms Act against them. An old enmity is stated to be the reason behind the incident, the police said. BSF, police nab 2 drug smugglers from border area Tribune News Service Amritsar, December 11 The BSF has nabbed two narco-smugglers from the border area in Amritsar district. The operation was conducted jointly with the Punjab Police. On December 10, the BSF intelligence wing received information about the presence of some smugglers in the border area of Amritsar district. A comprehensive late evening operation in collaboration with Punjab Police led to two Indian narco-smugglers being apprehended near village Jasror in district Amritsar. Rs 37000 in drug money, two mobile phones and two small weighing machines were also recovered from their possession. Both the apprehended narco-smugglers have been handed over to the police for further investigations and to find their linkages with the smuggling syndicate. She received information about women’s cases and said their cases should be settled by setting up a court inside the jail. She visited the Central Jail c m y b and took stock of the arrangements for protecting the human rights of the prisoners. She interacted with the women prisoners in the Central Jail and listened to the difficulties being faced by them to get information about the free legal aid available as per the rules. She directed the central jail and administrative authorities to provide free legal aid to the needy women prisoners so that they can defend themselves despite not being financially capable. She said that the prisoners must have Aadhaar cards for which a camp should be set up in the central jail. Apart from this provision should be made to give pension to the widow women in the Central Jail. She ordered Jail staff to provide complete treatment to the diabetics and other serious diseases at the Central Jail. She also inspected the system of giving work to the women prisoners in the jail according to their skills and said that they should be given work according to their skills so that they can participate in the progress of the society by starting life afresh. She stressed on holding awareness programs to improve behaviour of prisoners in the jail so that it can actually become a correctional home. She also visited Bhai Ghanaiya ji Birdh Ashram and talked with the women. She said that they should be made aware about the pension schemes and other schemes run by the department and get the benefit of the schemes run by the government. During her meet- ing with the officials at the District Administration Complex, she directed for timely medical examination of the women living in the old age home and Ayushman cards should also be made. She said the main need of the hour was to give priority to the protection of the interests of women and solve the problems faced by them. Wrapping up her two-day visit she on Wednesday visited Anganwadi centers at Harsha Chhina and reviewed the activities going on there. She learnt about the self-help group formed by women at Block Harsha Chhina while praising said that it is a matter of great joy that these women are not dependent on anyone.
