AAP list has 20 turncoats INTACH concerned over neglect of from Congress, BJP Mughal-era Nakodar Dakhni Sarai Aparna Banerji Avneet Kaur Tribune News Service Tribune News Service Jalandhar, December 12 There are many turncoats in the lists released by various parties for the Jalandhar MC poll. At least 20 leaders on the AAP list are former Congress councillors or leaders of the BJP . The AAP’s list has former Mayor Jagdish Raja from Ward 64 and two former Deputy Mayors — Raja’s wife Anita Raja (Ward no. 65) and Harsimranjit Singh Bunty (Ward 50). Former Congress councillor Aruna Arora (Ward 33) also figures among the hoppers. While Bunty had joined the party earlier, Raja, Anita Raja and Aruna Arora were fresh entrants into the AAP . All through this year, various councillors have been hopping from one party to another - with many switching sides yet again - right before the MC elections. After the ending of the tenure of the MC House, there have been several elections in Jalandhar. Former Congress councillor Harjinder Singh Ladda, who has bagged ticket from Ward no. 48 from AAP this year, had remained in the Congress and Jalandhar, December 12 The Indian National Trust for Art, Culture and Heritage (INTACH), Punjab chapter, through its state convener Maj Gen Balwinder Singh (retd), has urged the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) and Punjab Tourism Department to address the alarming decline in the upkeep of the Nakodar Dakhni Sarai, a Mughal-era heritage site. In a letter to ASI Director General Yudubir Singh Rawat, Maj Gen Singh highlighted the deteriorating condition of this 17th-century Mughal-era masterpiece, which is facing the dwindling visitor numbers due to inadequate facilities and poor maintenance. Located just 25 km from Jalandhar, Dakhni Sarai was built in 1640 by Mughal noble Ali Mardan Khan during Emperor Shah Jahan’s reign. Renowned for its architectural grandeur, the site features 124 intricately designed cells surrounding by a serene courtyard, offering a glimpse into the opulence of the Mughal-era hospitality. However, Singh Former Mayor Jagdish Raja and his wife former Senior Deputy Mayor Anita Raja now in AAP in Jalandhar . Titu along with various other Congress and AAP councillors had joined the BJP in March this year. When former Congressman and later AAP MP Sushil Rinku joined the BJP this year, ahead of the LS polls, 15 former Congress councillors shifted to the BJP with him. Some of these leaders switched to AAP ahead of the Jalandhar West bypoll. The AAP list has the highest number of Congress turncoats. They include Aruna Arora (Ward 33), Des Raj Jassal (Ward 84), Manmohan Raju (Ward 20), Harjinder Singh Ladda (Ward 48), Deepak Sharda (Ward 78), Tarlok Saran (Ward 6), Rajneesh Bhagat (Ward 46), Parveen (Ward 51), Amardeep Sandal (Keenu) (Ward 8), Ganga Devi (Ward 23), Nirmal Nimmi (Ward 74), Sandeep Verma (Ward 54) among others. AAP’s Ward 62 pick Vaneet Dhir and Ward 55’s Amit Ludhra also shifted from the BJP to AAP just days ago. c m y b A view of Nakodar Dakhni Sarai, a Mughal-era heritage site. expressed concerns over the crumbling internal walls which are at risk of collapse, if immediate repairs are not undertaken. The site also suffers from a lack of basic amenities. “The drinking water facility is nonfunctional due to a broken motor that has not been replaced despite long-pending approval. The washrooms, too, are in a deplorable state, making the site less appealing to visitors. The absence of a canteen or refreshment facility further discourages tourists, who often seek basic conveniences at such heritage locations”, the letter reads. In the letter, Maj Gen Singh suggested that the Sarai could be used for cultural and revenue-generating events, such as musical evenings, gatherings and even wedding receptions. This, he argued, would not only attract more visitors, but also provide funds for the monument’s upkeep. He also proposed converting some of the intricately designed cells into overnight stay rooms with minimal modifications, enhancing its appeal as a heritage destination. The accessibility to the site is another challenge. The lack of proper parking facilities and a poorly maintained approach road makes it difficult for visitors to reach the Sarai comfortably. Addressing these infrastructure issues, Singh stressed, are essential to revitalising the site and ensuring a steady influx of tourists. Describing the Nakodar Dakhni Sarai as a “living relic of Punjab’s Mughal heritage,” Singh emphasised its importance for history lovers, architecture enthusiasts and future generations. He called on the authorities to act urgently to preserve this treasure of the Mughal-era architecture, underscoring its potential to serve as a hub of cultural and historical significance. Reviving and maintaining such sites, Singh argued, is crucial not only for tourism, but also for safeguarding the region’s rich cultural heritage for generations to come.
