Witnesses said Paramjit lost his control of the vehicle while talking to his wife. The injured Gurminder was admitted to the Civil Hospital. OC FOUR BOOKED FOR MURDER BID Phagwara: The police have booked four villagers on the charges of attempt to murder and firing. The accused Dilbag Singh, Sukhpreet Singh, Kulwant Singh and Varinder Pal Singh were residents of Reharrwan village. Kulwindar Singh of Punia Mand village complained to the police that the accused attacked and broke his vehicle's windowpanes to kill him and opened fire. OC Robbers shoot at petrol station manager, take away cash bag Avneet Kaur Masked bikers loot petrol station staff Tribune News Service Jalandhar, January 16 A brazen bike gang struck again in broad daylight, marking their second robbery in just three days and raising serious questions about the effectiveness of law enforcement in the region. The robbers today targeted Sagar Ohri, manager of the Kathpal Petrol Pump, who was ambushed while carrying nearly Rs 4 lakh just 200 metres away from the petrol pump in a busy area. The gang, consisting of three armed men on a motorcycle, had been tracking Ohri as he left his residence. They confronted him with guns drawn, seizing the bag of cash and fleeing the scene. However, Ohri, showing courage, chased the robbers on his scooter till the petrol pump. The situation escalated when the victim collided with the robbers’ bike near the petrol pump, leading to a violent confrontation. In response, one of the robbers fired three shots — one into the ground and two at Ohri, hitting him in the thigh and waist. The robbers then fled the scene, leaving the victim in a pool of blood. Ohri was rushed to the hospital and remains in a critical condition. Empty bullet cartridges were found at the scene. The fact that the gang carried out this bold crime in the middle of a busy street in broad daylight only deepens the resident’s fears. Meanwhile, the police have also issued wanted posters featuring CCTV footage of the gang, offering a reward of Rs 25,000 for any information leading to their capture. However, witnesses like Rajiv Ahuja, who was present near Workshop Chowk, have expressed outrage over the rising boldness of these criminals. “The way these robberies are taking place in broad daylight, it shows that these criminals have no fear of the law,” Ahuja said. “It’s clear that the police are unable to stop them, and we are left at their mercy.” Jalandhar, January 16 Three masked assailants robbed petrol pump employees at gun point. The trio fired four or five shots in the air to scare employees and then looted them of their cash and valuables. Due to sporting masks and their bike plates bearing fake numbers, the masked assailants couldn’t be caught so far. The incident took place between 7 pm and 7.15 pm on Tuesday evening. The incident took place at the Jalandhar-Jammu highway when three masked men on a bike attacked a petrol station at Nizamuddinpur. In the CCTV footage of the incident, which has gone viral, three masked men go turn by turn to employees of the petrol pump and workers are seen handing over money to them after their fire aerial shots. Petrol station owner Pushpinder Singh said, “Three masked men came to the petrol station around 7 pm and started firing. They fired shots to threaten the employees to give money. Hospital guard held for seeking ~10,000 bribe Tribune News Service Jalandhar, January 16 The Punjab Vigilance Bureau (VB), during its campaign against corruption in the state, has arrested a private security guard Narinder Kumar, deployed in the Civil Hospital, Jalandhar, and resident of village Chak Sadhu Wala in Hoshiarpur district for demanding a bribe of Rs 10,000 in the name of a PCMS doctor. Disclosing this here today, an official spokesperson of the state VB said a case has been registered against the accused based on a complaint lodged by Lokesh, a resident of Mallanwala Khas, Ferozepur on the Chief Minister’s Anti-Corruption Action Line. He further said the complainant had said in his complaint that he had approached an orthopaedics specialist in the office of Civil Surgeon, Jalandhar, to issue disability certificate for his relative but couldn’t get the disability status to purchase e-tricycle. Afterwards the accused, deployed as a security guard by the doctor outside his office, has demanded Rs 10,000 to get the disability certificate. The complainant has recorded the conversation on his phone with the accused and submitted it to the VB as an evidence. The spokesperson said during verification, the allegations had been found correct as the same had been supported by oral evidence as well as recording of conversation. Based on this verification report, a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act has been registered against the accused Narinder Kumar at VB police station, Jalandhar range. He would be produced in a court tomorrow and further investigation into this case was under progress, he said. RTI activist files plaint against Mayor Woman, lover held for killing over using red beacon light atop car husband within 48 hours Tribune News Service Avneet Kaur Tribune News Service Jalandhar, January 16 Simranjit Singh, a city-based RTI activist, has filed a complaint with the Governor and the DGP (copy of which is in possession of Jalandhar Tribune), accusing Mayor Vaneet Dhir of violating laws by using red and blue beacon lights, police sirens and an official flag on his government-allotted vehicle. Simranjit alleged that the Mayor’s vehicle had been equipped with these accessories without authorisation, defying government directives aimed at abolishing the VIP culture. He pointed out that such action violated the government notification, issued on April 15, 2017, and reiterated in the order dated June 14, 2019. “These directives limit the use of red and blue beacons to emergency and disaster management vehicles and explicitly prohibit their use on vehicles of public representatives, including mayors”, he Mayor Vaneet Dhir accused of violating law by using red and blue beacon lights atop his govt vehicle in Jalandhar. Jalandhar, January 16 The Kapurthla police on Thursday uncovered the mystery of a blind murder of a Phulowal resident, who had been brutally attacked by assailants while on way to work. The police said during investigations, a plot hatched by the man’s wife and her lover was unearthed — to eliminate the man, so that the duo could marry. The murder accused had come in contact with each other through Instagram just a year ago. Under SSP Gaurav Toora, along with SP Investigation, , Sarabjit Rai, DSP Deep Karan Singh, DSP Detective, Par, minder Singh, and a team of officers, including Inspector Jarnail Singh (In-Charge, CIA staff, Kapurthala) and Kripal Singh, chief officer, Thana Sadar, Kapurthala, the police solved the mystery of the murder of Lakhwinder Singh. On the evening of January 12 around 7:30 pm, Lakhwinder, a resident of Phulowal, Kapurthala, was attacked by two youths near the cremation ground of Danwind village while he was on his way to work. The assailants struck Lakhwinder on his head with a stick. On the statement Balwinder Singh, Lakhwinder Singh’s brother, an FIR was registered under Sections 126(2), 118(1), 3(5) of the BNS at the Kotwali police station in Kapurthala against unknown persons. Lakhwinder passed away on January 14 at Guru Nanak Hospital in Amritsar, prompting the case to be upgraded to a murder investigation u/s 103, 61(2) of the BNS. During investigation, based on human and technical evidence, Tammana, wife of Lakhwinder, eventually admitted to her involvement in the murder plot to eliminate him. The police also unearthed the role of Kuldeep Kumar, her lover, in the entire incident. The police have arrested Tamanna and Kuldeep Kumar, resident of House No. 52, Adarsh Nagar, Piplawala Temple, Hoshiarpur, on January 15. Kuldeep also has three previous cases against him at Hoshiarpur on charges of theft, etc, registered in 2017 and 2018. He had come out on bail on September 15, 2023. The police said about one year ago, Tamanna came in contact with Kuldeep through Instagram. The murder was planned after Tamanna and Kuldeep developed a love affair via social media. Through her husband’s regular night shifts, Tamanna maintained contact with Kuldeep, eventually plotting to kill her husband to marry Kuldeep. Kuldeep also expressed his desire to marry Tamanna, but he insisted that Lakhwinder had to be out of the picture for them to marry. Previous cases against Kuldeep include FIRs in April 2017 under Section 379B IPC, at Bulowal Police Station, Hoshiarpur; in May 2018 under Section 379-B at Mehtiana Police Station, Hoshiarpur, and in August 2018 under Sections 379, 34, IPC, at Bulowal Police Station, Hoshiarpur. Man nabbed with drug money 2 peddlers held with 50 gram heroin Tribune News Service Jalandhar, January 16 The Kapurthala police on Thursday nabbed a youth with 1 kg heroin and Rs 90,000 drug money. An Innova car has also been recovered from the youth. SSP Kapurthala, Gaurav Too, ra said a man was nabbed during a drive against anti-social elements led by SP Investiga, tion, Sarabjit Singh, and DSP , Detective, Paramjit Singh. Acting on the instructions, a police team conducted a patrolling and apprehended Anmolpreet Singh, a resident of Main Bazar, Jamsher, Jalandhar. The accused, who was driving a white Toyota Innova Car, was intercepted. Sarabjit Rai said the youth was nabbed at the Dhilwan naka this morning. A driver by profession, the 27-year-old youth was involved in drug peddling. He was coming from Amritsar and heading towards Jalandhar in the car, when he was nabbed. A case was registered under Sections 21C of the NDPS Act against him at the Dhilwan police station in Kapurthala. During interrogation, the accused confessed to his involvement in drug smuggling and disclosed that the recovered heroin was meant for supply. c m y b Tribune News Service Jalandhar, January 16 The Jalandhar Commissionerate Police arrested two persons involved in drug smuggling and recovered 50 gram of heroin during a special operation near T-Point Sangal Sohal Road Leather Complex. Led by Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma, the operation resulted in the arrest of Balbir Singh, alias Bira, from Moga’s Kot Mohammad Khan and Shakuntala Devi from Ammiwala, Moga. Both suspects attempted to evade the arrest by discarding polyethene envelopes containing heroin. The police recovered 25 gram of heroin from each envelope. Following their apprehension, an FIR under the NDPS Act was registered at Police Station Basti Bawa Khel. Commissioner Swapan Sharma highlighted the police’s relentless efforts in combating drug peddling. “These arrests are part of our intensified campaign against narcotics. We are investigating their supply chain and connections to dismantle the network,” he said. Both suspects have a history of drug-related offences. Balbir Singh has three previous NDPS cases registered in Moga and Jalandhar Rural, while Shakuntala Devi was implicated in a 2022 drug case in SAS Nagar. “The police have ramped up investigations to trace the wider network of drug trafficking linked to the duo”, said Commissioner Sharma, reaffirming the department’s commitment to eradicating the drug menace, pledging to create a drug-free city and ensure the safety of its citizens.
