The incident was captured on the CCTVs of the shop. The police reached the shop and took the Digital video recorder of the cameras into custody and started further probe to identify the suspects. Show owner Kuldeep Singh said he runs a jewellery shop by name of Deepak Jewellers in the main bazaar of Ajnala. He said today two customers were sitting in the shop and he was polishing their jewellery when two masked persons entered the shop. The gun-wielding youths threatened to shoot him and asked to hand over whatever he was having. He said his accomplice picked up gold jewellery from the cabinet box. The accused then took the keys and pushed them in the room of the shop. They then took out gold jewellery worth ~10.5 lakh, 6 kg silver worth ~5.79 lakh and ~50,000 cash from safe. GURBAXPURI Tarn Taran, January 19 Traffic came to a halt for hours after a crash triggered a pile-up of seven vehicles on National Highway 54 in front of the District Administrative Complex here on Sunday. Traffic was restored after hours of the rescue operation carried out collectively by the police and passersby. The police had to call in JCBs and cranes to remove the vehicles involved in the crash from the middle of the national highway road. However, no casualty was reported. Occurred at about 9 in the morning of Sunday, the incident took place due to the negligence of the driver of a truck trailer (PB-05 AB-1567) laden with material brought from a crusher site. The truck coming from the Madhopur (Gurdaspur) side rammed the rear of four vehicles while two vehicles rammed the rear of the truck trailer. ASI Rajinder Kumar and ASI Sukhdev Singh from the Sadar police station along with police personnel reached the spot soon after receiving the report of the accident. ASI Sukhdev Singh said though the driver of the truck trailer managed to escape from the spot, his assistant cleaner was caught by the police. ASI Sukhdev Singh said cranes were called to the spot to remove the damaged vehicles from the road which took hours. After clearing the road, traffic could be restored at 2 pm. The ASI said after getting the complaint from the drivers of the damaged vehicles, the next course of action would be initiated against the truck trailer driver, who is absconding and his assistant cleaner has been held. — OC Amritsar, January 19 The Punjab Government has announced to start the system of e-challaning of vehicles in four major cities, including the holy city, of the state. The traffic police here have geared up for the launch of the facility. Apart from Amritsar, the project would be launched in other three major cities — Jalandhar, Ludhiana and Mohali. The online challaning system would be commencing from January 26. Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar confirmed the development while adding that the Amritsar traffic police are geared up for it. “Initially, the facility would be started from seven intersections where high-tech CCTVs are already working to check offenders. The old tubewell in Jatta Wali Gali had been repaired previously but was still not functioning properly due to a damaged bore, prompting the need for new tubewells. The residents of the area had been complaining of inadequate supply of water after which the plan to set up a new tubewell was initiated by the municipal corporation. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Gupta emphasized that the Aam Aadmi Party government of Punjab prioritizes the needs of common people. To address these needs, camps are being set up under the “Sarkar Aayi Aapke Dwar” project to listen to people’s problems, he said. He added that the upcoming camps would focus on providing old-age, widow, and disabled pensions, as well as facilitating the creation of ration cards through a soon-to-be-launched portal. The challan would be sent to the violator directly on his mobile or their home address by post just like in Chandigarh,” he said. He said besides helping in identifying traffic violators, the CCTV cameras would be a great help in regulating traffic. The CCTV cameras were installed under the Smart City Project. In October 2022, the Amritsar Smart City Limited initiated setting up of the Integrated Command Control Centre (ICCC) project, which was aimed to establish a state-ofthe-art surveillance system with 1,168 CCTV cameras installed at 409 locations across the city. The ~91-crore project included 50 face detection cameras, 10 LED screens and a public alert system at 50 chowks. It has been almost a year when the project was completed. It was awaiting the nod from the government. The company hired by the Amritsar Smart City Limited will look after the operation and maintenance work for four years. Amritsar, January 19 The Border Security Force (BSF) has confiscated two drones and a heroin packet in three different incidents on the border belt here on Saturday. During a joint search operation with Punjab Police, BSF troops recovered one assembled hexacopter from a farming field adjacent to Lodhi Gujar village in the district. The weight of recovered hexacopter is approximately 20.590 kgs. The made in China was imprinted on the rotator of its propeller. In the second incident, dur- ing a joint search with Punjab police at approximately 11.25 am, BSF jawans recovered one DJI Mavic Classic 3 drone which collided with the wall of a house and fell near Malikpur village in Gurdaspur district. In the third incident, one packet suspected to be containing heroin (gross weight 558 grams) was recovered from the farming field adjacent to Wan village in Tarn Taran district. The packet wrapped in yellow adhesive tape and a cooper wire loop was found attached to it, which indicates a possible case of drone dropping. Amritsar, January 19 Cabinet Minister Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal today said that AAP is going to appoint the Mayor of Amritsar soon while hinting that they have procured the requisite majority for the coveted post. He refuted the allegations of Congress leaders that AAP is into horse-trading, paying ~25 lakh per councillor. Dhaliwal was in city to inaugurate development works. On being questioned, Dhaliwal claimed that the Mayor would be from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). He said they would appoint the Mayor soon as they got the necessary majority. “Our party believes that anyone who genuinely thinks about the welfare of Punjab can join AAP regard, less of their current party affiliation. The arrested have been identified as Khushveen Singh alias Khushi (27) of Guru Nanak Avenue, Auguston alias Zoro (28) of Kirpal Colony, Majitha Road and Jatinderpal Singh aka Bawa Rampal (27) of Jagdambe Colony on Batala road. Khushveen returned from Dubai around seven months ago and Jatinderpal used to work at a liquor vend, said a police official. Amritsar, January 19 A wave of happiness ran across Timmowal village after Indian Hockey Captain Harmanpreet Singh received the prestigious Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna award from President Droupadi Murmu in a glittering National Sports Award ceremony in New Delhi recently. Talking to Amritsar Tribune over phone, Harmanpreet — who led the Indian men’s team to a second successive bronze medal in the Paris Olympics in last year — said it was a dream come true for him as the award is named after the greatest hockey player, the legendary c m y b Harmanpreet Singh Major Dhyan Chand. At his house in Timmowal village, situated on the Amritsar-Jalandhar GT road, his father Sarbjit Singh said the entire family was proud at his achievement, which was the outcome of his hard work on field and continuous performance. His elder brother Kamalpreet Singh said his industriousness and perseverance on the hockey ground paid off. He recalled that in October he was tagged as the most expensive buy at Rs 78 lakh for the auction of the Hockey India League. Constant accolades are proof of his performance with the hockey stick. Veteran left winger Brig Harcharan Singh (retired), VSM and Arjuna awardee, a medal winner hockey Olympian and Gold medallist in World Hockey Cup 1975, said, “As far as players from Punjab are concerned, captain Harmanpreet Singh, who has been twice declared the player of the year by FIH, remained the highest goal scorer in the Tokyo and Paris Olympics. Earning the Khel Ratna award would infuse in him a spirit to further scale heights in his game.” Harmanpreet’s stellar captaincy earned him the nickname Sarpanch, which was promptly picked up by netizens. His journey has been stupendous from Punjab’s farms to Olympics. Born in a farming family in Punjab, he grew up helping his father in the fields to join the Indian junior hockey team at 15. Dropped from several tournaments, he cemented his place in the Indian team till he became the go-to man for penalty corners.
