ASI Balveer Singh said in his complaint that on January 24, the police received information that two youths were roaming in a government college without identity cards. When the security guard on duty stopped them and asked for their identity cards, one of the accused pulled out a pistol and started threatening him. OC Councillor in trouble for State Emblem distortion Mandatory inscription of ‘Satyameva Jayate’ missing in letterhead Avneet Kaur Tribune News Service Jalandhar, February 15 City-based RTI activist Simranjit Singh has lodged a complaint with the Ministry of Home Affairs, the Governor of Punjab, the Director General of Police and the Commissioner of Police, Jalandhar, against Ward 18 councillor Kanwar Sartaj Singh for the alleged misuse and improper depiction of the State Emblem of India. In his complaint, Singh highlighted that the councillor’s letterhead displayed an incomplete version of the emblem, omitting the national motto “Satyameva Jayate” inscribed in Devanagari script below the Lion Capital. Citing the State Emblem of India (Prohibition of Improper Use) Act, 2005, RTI activist Simranjit argued that the emblem, as used by the councillor, was not in conformity Councillor from Ward no. 18 Kanwar Sartaj Singh used ‘State Emblem of India’ in violation of the Act, 2005. with the prescribed design and constituted a violation of the law. He emphasised that the State Emblem is a symbol of national authority and must be used strictly in accordance with the law. He urged the authorities to register an FIR and take strict action against the councillor, noting that the Ministry of Home Affairs also had issued a notification to all chief secretaries, warning against the improper display of the emblem. Minor girl abducted Phagwara, February 15 On a complaint lodged by Pawan Shah of Onkar Nagar, Phagwara, the police have registered a case against an unknown youth on the charges of abducting the minor daughter of the complainant on the pretext of marrying her. The girl was missing since February 12 as she went to school but did not come back. No arrest has been made. OC MANY BOOKED FOR VILLAGE THEFT Phagwara: The Nurmahal police have booked unidentified persons on the charge of stealing parts of transformer from the fields of a farmer. Gurdeep Singh of Tagarr village complained to the police that the accused stole oil and wires from a transformer in his fields. A case has been registered against them. OC PO ARRESTED IN 2020 CASE Phagwara: The Shahkot police have arrested a proclaimed offender (PO) absconding for the last few months. The accused has been identified as Hani Varma, alias Loota, of Mohalla Baghwala in Shahkot. The accused was wanted in a case of selling illicit liquor registered in August 2020 and as was declared PO in September 2024. OC MARRIED WOMAN FOUND MISSING Phagwara: The Nakodar city police have registered a missing report in connection with disappearance of a married woman. Sunil Rane, a native of Bihar and living in Pandori Khas village, complained to the police that his wife Sangali and his daughter Shivani went out of home on February 13 but did not return home. A missing report has been registered. oc ~2.99L DUPED, ONE BOOKED Hoshiarpur: The police have named the accused travel agent on the charge of allegedly cheating a person of Rs 2.99 lakh on the pretext of sending him broad. Rajinder Kumar of Muradpur Awana told the police that in the name of sending his son to Portugal, travel agent Parminder Singh of Theh Barnala had allegedly cheated him. Meanwhile, responding to the allegations, Councillor Kanwar Sartaj Singh claimed the omission was unintentional. He stated that due to a miscommunication with the printing agency, his letterhead mistakenly featured the incomplete emblem. He clarified that he had already ordered new letterheads to rectify the mistake. “A MC House meeting is approaching and I had to submit a letter to the Mayor regarding issues in my ward. Since there wasn’t enough time to get new letterheads printed, I used the available ones. I had no intention to disrespect the emblem and was unaware of the violation,” he said. Class X students had examination of English while the Plus Two students appeared for examination on ‘Entrepre- neurship’. The matric students said the paper went well and the anxiety they had about taking their first board examination was somewhat relieved. Gauri, an student, said, “I was able to finish the paper well in time. Both grammar and literature part had easy questions. The paper came on the pattern we had been expecting and covered almost the entire syllabus.” Principal Police DAV Public School Rashmi Vij said, “It was a balanced paper with a moderate level of difficulty. There was one issue with the choice in comprehensions, which we have flagged to the board. Otherwise, it was a good paper and students were quite satisfied after attempting it.” Drug network busted, five with 303gm of heroin in cops’ net Tribune News Service Jalandhar, February 15 In a crackdown on drug trafficking, the Jalandhar Commissionerate Police have arrested five persons and seized 303 gram of heroin in an operation aimed at curbing the drug menace in the city. The arrests were made following a well-coordinated effort by a special police cell under the leadership of Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma. During a routine patrol recently near Bhagwan Valmiki Gate, officers noticed two men and a woman acting suspiciously. When confronted, one of them attempted to flee, discarding a black polythene bag in the process. The police swiftly apprehended the trio and recovered 30 gram of heroin in the bag. Following this, an FIR was registered under Sections 21, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act at Police Station Division Number 2, Jalandhar. Further interrogation revealed a larger drug network. One of the arrested persons Radhika, alias Pinky, disclosed the location of additional contraband. Acting on her information, the police recovered another 273 gram of heroin hidden near Bidhipur Phatak, leading to the inclusion of Section 29 of the NDPS Act in the FIR. Additional investigations led to the arrest of two more suspects and further drug seizures. The arrested persons have been identified as Tanish Kumar, alias Tanu (Jalandhar), Bharat, alias Shanu (Amritsar), Radhika, alias Pinky (Jalandhar), Dinesh Kumar (Jalandhar) and Deepak, alias Krela (Jalandhar). In addition to the heroin, the police recovered a small electronic weighing machine and 10 plastic polythene bags used for packaging drugs. Police said all had been presented before the court and remanded to police custody for further investigation. c m y b Clash over shobha yatra arrangements, road blocked Tribune News Service Nawanshahr, February 15 A violent clash occurred at Saloh village near here this afternoon over the issue of arranging trolleys for the shobha yatra which was to be taken out to commemorate Guru Ravidas Jayanti. Members of mgmt panel of Guru Ravidas gurdwara got hurt and hospitalised The matter was being sorted out by the management committee and sarpanch of the village but some youths turned violent. The two groups started slapping, pushing and shoveling each other. The matter became worse when they even took out bricks, stones and sharpedged weapons and it became free for all for everyone. Members of the management committee of Guru Ravidas gurdwara also got hurt and had to be hospitalised. Police teams reached the spot and took control of the trolleys over which the feud began. After this, the agitators blocked Chandigarh Chowk in the city. The commuters heading to Chandigarh from Phagwara and Nawanshahr got stuck up in a huge jam. The dharna was lifted after the police assured them of action. DSP Raj Kumar said statements were being taken by the members from both sides that indulged in the clash and action would be taken against the accused. Crackdown on ATM fraud racket, 2 held Jalandhar, February 15 In a crackdown against financial fraud, the Jalandhar Commissionerate Police has busted an ATM fraud racket, arresting two persons involved in unauthorised withdrawals. The operation was led by Commissioner of Police Swapan Sharma, following a complaint filed by a retired CRPF sub-inspector. The case came to light when Avinash Kumar reported that on January 3 around 6:15pm, three persons tricked him into exchanging his ATM card at a State Bank of India ATM located at Gulab Devi Road, Windsor Park. Soon after, Rs 17,000 was fraudulently withdrawn from his account. Based on his complaint, an FIR was registered at Police Station, Division Number 1. Acting swiftly, the police launched an investigation and apprehended two suspects, identified as Kamalay Alam and Shivam Kumar, both originally from Bihar and currently residing in Jalandhar. During the arrest, the authorities recovered nine ATM cards belonging to different banks and seized a white motorcycle used in their criminal activities. A third suspect remains at large and efforts are underway to trace him. Investigations revealed that the arrested persons were involved in multiple criminal cases. Commissioner Sharma confirmed that the accused had been presented before the court and placed under police custody for further interrogation. — TNS
