OC Goods worth lakhs destroyed in fire at house Phagwara, February 21 Household goods worth lakhs of rupees were reduced to ashes when a massive fire broke out at a house in Subhash Nagar locality here, causing panic among residents in the area. According to sources, the fire started inside house from an oil lamp (jyot). Fortunately, no casualties were reported in the incident. A locality resident said a woman in the house had lit the lamp and fallen asleep, while her husband was away at work. During this time, flames from the lamp ignited nearby curtains and the fire rapidly spread throughout the house. Upon receiving an alert, fire engines were rushed to the spot. However, narrow lanes of the locality posed a challenge for large fire engines to reach the house. Eventually, smaller fire engines managed to navigate through narrow alleys. After strenuous efforts, three firefighters were able to bring the blaze under control. — OC Man booked for causing death by negligence Phagwara, February 21 The Lohian Khas police have booked a car driver for causing death by negligence. Investigating Officer (IO) Harwindar Singh said the accused was identified as Ajit Singh, a resident of Nahl village. Harjit Singh, a resident of Fareed Sarai village in Kapurthala district, complained to the police that the accused, who was driving his car at high speed and negligently, hit his brother Kulwant Singh, who riding on his motorcycle near Lohian, leaving him seriously injured him. Kulwant was rushed to a nearby clinic where he died, the complainant said. Former Congress MLA Pawan Adia, who was present on the occasion, welcomed everyone into the party fold, while praising their decision as a step that would lead to betterment of Punjab and Punjabis. Addressing all those present on the occasion, Adia said those who joined the Congress, include councillors Baljinder Kaur, Daljit Kaur, Mangat Ram, Vijay Kumar and Daljit Rai, besides former councillors Sohan Singh Sheru, Randhir Singh Flora and Mehtab Singh and other AAP activists. Councillors and others, who joined the Congress, said they worked for the AAP day and night at the grassroots level to make a place for the party in hearts of the people. Commissioner of Police (CP) Swapan Sharma said a case had been registered under Sections 304(2) and 3(5) of the BNS at Bhargo Camp police station based on the statement of Mahesh Inder Singh, a resident of New Model House. He that Mahesh had complained to the police about snatching of gold earrings from his wife. Sharma said based on investigation, the police identified accused as Bhupinder Singh, alias Bablu, a resident of Punjabi Bagh, and Vikram Verma, a resident of Industrial Town. The CP said the police recovered a Splendor motorcycle (bearing registration number PB07-AX-6371), which was stolen a few days ago, from the accused. Kapurthala admn launches helpline to file complaint against travel agents Phagwara, February 21 To prevent fraud and malpractice by unauthorised travel agents, the district administration has launched a dedicated helpline number for the public to lodge complaints. Deputy Commissioner (DC) Amit Kumar Panchal announced that individuals, who had grievances against any travel agent, could directly contact the helpline number 01822-233777. He said, “Besides, Assistant Commissioner (General), Kapurthala, has been appointed as the nodal officer to oversee complaints. People can also register their complaints at the Chief Minister’s Assistance Centre located at the District Administrative Complex in Kapurthala.” The DC further said 384 travel agents were registered under the Punjab Travel Professions Regulation Act in the Kapurthala district. The list of registered agents was available on the official website —Kapurthala.nic.in — for verifying their registration status before availing their services. The administration has urged residents to only engage with authorised and registered travel agents. In case of any fraudulent activities, the public must use the helpline number for prompt action. — OC Two miscreants steal ~50K from man outside bank Our Correspondent Hoshiarpur, February 21 Two miscreants stole Rs 50,000 from a person who was returning home from a bank. The police registered a case and started investigation into the matter. Varun Kumar, a resident of Rishi Nagar, told the police that he had withdrawn Rs 50,000 from the branch of Punjab National Bank at Prabhat Chowk. When he came out of the bank, a person stopped him. The complainant said the said person told him that he had Rs 2 lakh in cash which he wanted to send to his family. The person told Varun that he did not have an account in the bank. So, he could not send money to his family. The accused told Varun that if he cooperates, he would deposit the amount in his account and he could send it to his family. After some time, both the accused left from the spot. Later, when Varun checked his pockets, he found Rs 50,000 was missing. He alleged that the duo had stolen cash from his pocket. Elderly couple killed, 9 hurt as two carscollidehead-onnearPhagwara Phagwara, February 21 A tragic road accident on the Phagwara-Hoshiarpur highway near Dhande Mor claimed the lives of an elderly couple and left more than half-a-dozen people injured on Thursday night. According to SHO Sadar Dilbag Singh, the deceased were identified as Mukhtiar Singh (70) and his wife, Dharam Kaur, both residents of Jagjitpur village near Phagwara. The accident occurred when Mukhtiar Singh was returning home from a wedding ceremony in his car (bearing registration number PB-36-J-5243). As he approached Dhande-turn, a Swift car (bearing registration number PB-08-CF-4100) coming from the Phagwara side collided head-on with his vehicle. The impact of collision was so severe that Mukhtiar Singh and his wife died on the spot.
