Nakodar Deputy Superintendent of Police Sukhpal Singh said the accused have been identified as Nirwair Singh of Rurriwal village in Tarn Taran and his wife Paramjit Kaur. The victim, Amandeep Singh of Pandori Khas village, lodged a complaint with Jalandhar (Rural) Senior Superintendent of Police stating that he had paid Rs 16 lakh to the couple for facilitating the migration of his nephews. However, they neither sent them abroad nor returned the money. Following an inquiry, the police registered a case. OC 2 PEDDLERS HELD WITH HEROIN Phagwara: The Bilga police have arrested two drug peddlers for allegedly selling heroin. SHO Palwinder Singh stated that the accused, identified as Gurpreet Singh Gopi of Bhora village in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar, and Aman Deep Singh, alias Amna, of Rai Pur Dabba village, were caught with 15 gm of heroin. A case has been registered against them. The police have also impounded a car in which they were traveling with the contraband. OC MAN OPENS FIRE AT POLICE, HELD Phagwara: The Lohian Khas police have arrested a criminal on the charge of attempted murder and firing at law enforcement officers. SHO Labh Singh identified the accused as Dilbag Singh, alias Baga, of Reharrwan village under Shahkot police station. According to Sub-Inspector Amandeep Verma of the Crime Branch, Jalandhar Rural Police, his team was on patrol duty in Kakarr Kalan village when they received information that two absconding suspects in a firing case were hiding in a field along Mohari Wal-Lasurri link road. Armed with weapons, they were allegedly plotting a major crime. As the police approached, the accused opened fire and fled toward the railway tracks. One suspect got out of a car and began shooting at the police. In response, SI Verma fired a warning shot in the air from his service revolver. However, the accused continued firing while hiding behind a tree. In self-defence, the officer shot the suspect in the left leg before overpowering and arresting him. A case has been registered. OC Lok Adalat settles over 50,000 cases, awards ~103 crore in compensation Tribune News Service Jalandhar, March 8 A Lok Adalat was held at the Judicial Court Complexes in Jalandhar, Phillaur and Nakodar, where 50,464 cases were resolved through mutual compromise, leading to the awarding of Rs 103 crore in compensation to aggrieved parties. The cases taken up in the Lok Adalat covered a wide range of legal disputes, including civil and matrimonial matters, accident compensation claims, compoundable criminal cases, traffic challans and pre-litigative disputes involving Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL), banks, BSNL and revenue matters. Nirbhow Singh Gill, District and Sessions Judgecum-Chairperson of the District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Jalandhar, oversaw the proceedings. He stated that a total of 51,726 cases were taken up across 23 benches, with settlements being reached in 50,464 of them. He emphasised that Lok Adalats offer a unique opportunity for parties to resolve their disputes quickly, as decisions made in these forums are final and cannot be challenged in higher courts. “The verdicts in Lok Adalat are based on mutual agreements, fostering a sense of harmony and brotherhood. Additionally, applicants in civil cases receive a refund of the court fees they had paid,” he added. The event was conducted under the supervision of Justice Arun Palli, Judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and Executive Chairman, alongside Manjinder Singh, Member Secretary of the Punjab State Legal Services Authority, Mohali, and Harpal Singh, District and Sessions Judge, who also serves as Chairman of the District Legal Services Authority, Kapurthala. To manage the large number of cases, multiple benches were set up across the district. Eight benches were established at the District Court in Kapurthala, while three were allocated in Sub-Division Phagwara, two in Sub-Division Sultanpur Lodhi and one in Sub-Division Bhulath. Additionally, eight revenue benches were constituted to handle matters falling under their jurisdiction. The operation, led by Commissioner of Police (CP) Dhanpreet Kaur, was carried out by a team from Basti Bawa Khel police station. According to CP Kaur, the arrests took place on Friday during a routine police patrol from Basti Peerdad Road to Leather Complex. The accused have been identified as Shivansh and Jonny both residents of Dil- bagh Nagar, Basti Bawa Khel; Kanwarpal Singh of Husewal Talwandi village, Kapurthala; Sunil Singh of Basti Danishmanda, Jalandhar and Pankaj Joshi of Dilbagh Nagar. Following their arrest, a case was registered against them under Sections 21 and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. Initial investigations revealed that all five accused had previous cases under the NDPS Act, indicating their ongoing involvement in drug-related crimes. Jalandhar, March 8 The Punjab Agricultural University (PAU) launched its annual kisan mela series with a successful event at the Regional Research Station, Ballowal Saunkhari, in Nawanshahr. The mela saw enthusiastic participation from farmers who engaged with agricultural experts, attended live demonstrations and purchased quality seeds, planting materials and farm literature. This year’s event revolved around the theme: “Naviyan Kheti Takneekan Apnao, Kharach Ghatao, Chaad Vadao” (adopt new farming techniques, reduce costs, increase yields). PAU Vice-Chancellor Dr Satbir Singh Gosal, in his presidential address, urged farmers to adopt resilient crop varieties, optimise water and fertiliser use, and seek expert guidance from PAU scientists. He emphasised the role of kisan melas in spreading knowledge about modern agricultural techniques and encouraged organic farming and self-marketing. The event took place under the supervision of Dr Amandeep, Chief Judicial Magistrate-cum-Secretary, District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), SBS Nagar. District and Sessions Judgecum-Chairperson of DLSA, Priya Sood, personally reviewed all the benches at the Lok Adalat. The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising four eminent persons as trustees.
The Tribune, the largest selling daily in North India, publishes news and views without any bias or prejudice of any kind. Restraint and moderation, rather than agitational language and partisanship, are the hallmarks of the paper. It is an independent newspaper in the real sense of the term.
