The defence and civil administrations were maintaining high alert under the wait-and-watch mode. Even as all curfew-like restrictions were lifted with immediate effect on Saturday evening, uneasy calm continued to prevail in the entire tricity region, especially in the vicinity of defence and civil installations on Sunday. Though no fresh drone strikes were reported in this part of the region in the past 24 hours following an understanding between India and Pakistan to stop all firings and military actions on land, air and sea, the residents preferred to stay indoors despite it being a holiday on Sunday. Unlike normal days, the vehicular traffic and public movement on the roads and streets in the tricity remained considerably low today. SCIENTIFIC UNITS UNDER EXTRA VIGIL After receiving the inputs from the government, the security at scientific installations was stepped up on Sunday. The CSIRCentral Scientific Instruments Organisation and CSIR-Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH) in Chandigarh, Indian Institute of Science Education and Research in Mohali and others have been put under strict security protocols. The authorities have asked people to resume their normal activities and maintain calm, but stay alert. Despite the situation remaining normal, the tourist and public places, including the Sukhna Lake, Rock Garden, Rose Garden, Leisure Valley, Sector 17 Plaza, and leading malls like Elante, CP-67 and North Country, continued to wear a deserted look on Sunday, with the visitor footfall remaining much less than any other holiday. “The situation continues to be normal and completely under control with no need for the public to panic,” the Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator, MOHALI SCHOOLS TO REOPEN TODAY The schools, colleges, coaching centres and other educational institutions, which were shut since Friday, will reopen as per routine timings in Mohali from Monday. However, the educational institutions in Chandigarh and Panchkula will reopen from Tuesday due to Monday being a public holiday on account of Buddha Purnima. PANJAB VARSITY EXAMS FROM MAY 15 Even as the Delhi airport continues to operate normally, the Chandigarh international airport in Mohali will remain shut till 5.29 am on May 15 due to operational reasons. The Airports Authority of India (AAI) and other aviation authorities had issued a series of Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) announcing the temporary closure of 32 airports across Northern and Western India for all civil flight operations. Panjab University, which on Saturday said it would hold the earlier postponed semester exams from May 13, on Sunday notified that these will commence from May 15, as per the already notified schedule. However, the CET (UG) entrance exam, which was earlier scheduled for May 11, will be conducted on May 12, at the examination centres notified earlier. Gulab Chand Kataria, said, while disclosing that the defence and civil authorities were working in complete coordination and continued to remain in a high state of operational readiness. Kataria, who, along with Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, chaired an all-party meeting and interfaith meeting with the political and religious leaders from different parties and faiths in Chandigarh on Saturday evening, said the UT and its vicinity remained on the Pakistan radar during the days of heightened tension, but the swift and timely action by the defence and civil forces of civil defence training, he said tight vigil was still being maintained as it was the need of the hour. Zirakpur, May 11 Local residents nabbed a suspicious youth wearing IAF uniform and his accomplice on the Pabhat road near the boundary wall of the Air Force base this morning. They informed the Air Force authorities and the local police, who detained both youths. They have been identified as Zirakpur residents Sukhpreet Singh and his accomplice Suraj. The police said the youths stole the uniform from a courier agency on April 5. Zirakpur DSP Jaspinder Singh said, “A tailor of Behlana, Chandigarh, had sent the packet to the courier agency for delivery to a Gujarat-based officer, but the suspects stole it from there. A case under Section 204 and 303 of the BNS has been registered at the Zirakpur police station and both youth arrested.” Sukhpreet, a resident of Ashiana Complex in Zirakpur, had earlier claimed to have found the uniform near a local bakery on April 6 night. The local residents noticed the suspect in uniform roaming suspiciously in the area, after which they informed the authorities. Zirakpur SHO Gagandeep Singh said, “The suspect has been involved in petty crimes in the past and a thorough investigation is being done into the matter.” Sources said the Air Force authorities have also begun a probe. Cop run over by speeding BMW car Guv orders better amenities in Transport Area Tribune News Service Deceased Anand Dev Chandigarh, May 11 A constable of the Chandigarh Police was killed in a hit-and-run accident here today. The driver fled the scene in his BMW car after hitting the constable who was riding a bicycle. The victim has been identified as Constable Anand Dev, who was posted in the communication wing. The 32-year-old victim was riding his bicycle around 6:50 pm when the speeding BMW car hit him at the Sector 9-10 traffic lights near the Police Headquarters in Sector 9 in Chandigarh. The driver fled the scene in his car after hitting the cop. The injured constable was rushed to the Govern- ~3.77 cr for Chappar Chiri road Tribune News Service Mohali, May 11 The Punjab Government has granted approval to the upgrade of the road between Chappar Chiri Khurd and Chappar Chiri Kalan, which leads to the historic Baba Banda Singh Bahadur War Memorial here. The project will cost Rs 3.77 crore. The road serves as a parallel link to the KhararLandran stretch. After upgrade, there will be less traffic on that stretch. The project entails upgrading the 18-foot-wide road, spanning 2.05 km, at a cost of Rs 377.45 lakh. The scope of work includes the installation of 80 mm interlocking pavers and a five-year maintenance provision at a cost of Rs 8.52 lakh. Road work underway at Chappar Chiri Khurd vilage. The road, which has been awaiting upgrade since 2018, witnesses heavy traffic as it is an alternative route linking Mohali to the KhararLandran road. In view of the Fateh Diwas march scheduled for tomorrow, non-bituminous patch- work has been carried out on the stretch by the PWD, as a temporary measure to provide some relief to devotees. Marble godown ransacked, set afire in Zirakpur Zirakpur, May 11 Miscreants thrashed the employees and set a marble shop godown on fire in Zirakpur last night. The godown owner, Barinder Kumar, a resident of Baltana, alleged that around 20 youths ransacked his godown, damaged finished goods and later set the shed on fire. The miscreants assaulted his employees when they tried to stop them from ransacking the godown. A complaint has been registered. The victim said he suffered losses worth lakhs in the incident. Tribune News Service Chandigarh, May 11 Punjab Governor and Chandigarh Administrator Gulab Chand Kataria visited the Chandigarh Transport Area in Sector 26, here on Sunday. He chaired a meeting with the representatives of Chandigarh Transport Asso- ciation (CTA). During the meeting, the CTA representatives apprised the Administrator of various issues pertaining to the Transport Area, including high parking fees for large vehicles, need for renovation of road and neat and clean stay, eatery and shed facility for drivers. Kataria inspected the infrastructural facilities of the Transport Area and directed officials concerned to improve these facilities in consultation with all stakeholders. The facilities must be optimised effectively to meet their requirements and ensure efficient utilisation, he added.
