OC City-based lawyer drags civic body to Lok Adalat over long-pending garbage mess Avneet Kaur Tribune News Service Jalandhar, May 17 Raising strong concerns over unhygienic conditions and public health risks, Advocate Vikram Dutta has approached the Permanent Lok Adalat in Jalandhar, seeking urgent intervention against the Municipal Corporation’s alleged inaction over a large garbage dump on the city’s old GT Road. The location — directly opposite RCMP Crockery Store and Kay Pee Bakery — lies in the heart of the busy commercial area and has reportedly turned into a serious public nuisance. The legal application, filed under Sections 22-B and 22-C of the Legal Services Authorities Act, was submitted by Dutta through his counsel Advocate JP Singh. The petition calls for immediate and binding directions to the civic authorities to lift garbage, clean the area and maintain hygiene standards at all times. OC THREE DRUG PEDDLERS HELD Phagwara: The Bilga police have arrested three drug peddlers on the charge of selling intoxicating tablets. Investigating Officer (IO) Avtar Singh said 227 intoxicating tablets (loose) were recovered from the possession of the accused, identified as Manjot Singh, alias Jot, a resident of Bhatti village, and Raman Kumar and Vikas, alias Sunni, residents of Bilga village. The IO said a case was registered against the three accused. OC THREE NABBED FOR BREWING LIQUOR Phagwara: The Bilga police have arrested three villagers on the charge of brewing and selling illicit liquor. Bilga Station House Officer (SHO) Palwindar Singh said 59 bottles of hooch were seized from the possession of the accused, identified as Harjindar Singh, Raj Singh and Jeet Singh of Bhode village. The SHO said cases were registered against the accused. The application states that despite the civic body’s statutory obligation under the Punjab Municipal Corporation Act, 1976, to ensure proper waste management and cleanliness, its officials have “miserably failed” to discharge their duty. Photographs submitted along with the petition reportedly show piles of garbage scattered across the roadside, giving rise to breeding of flies, foul odour and unhygienic conditions. When officials, including ACP (West) Sarwanjit Singh and SHO Hardev Singh opened the sack, they found body of a man estimated to be between 30 and 35 years old. He was wearing a pink T-shirt and brown lower. A tattoo reading “Mom-Dad” was found on his left arm, while a bracelet was still intact on his other wrist. Due to the advanced state of decomposition, the police suspect the murder took place more than 36 hours before the body was found. Interestingly, no visible injuries were observed on the body, adding to the mystery surrounding the cause of death. Police officials said the exact cause and time of death would only be confirmed after the arrival of the post-mortem examination report. “We are waiting for the medical report to understand how the murder was committed. Meanwhile, the process for the identification of the victim is our top priority,” they said. The police have appealed to the public to share any information that may help in identifying the man. The police said, “Anyone who may have seen suspicious activity in the Kanshi Nagar area or recognises description of the deceased is urged to come forward.” The case has sparked outrage among residents, as the manner in which the body was dumped points to a wellplanned murder. Man booked for marrying again Fire destroys shanties in Nadala Kapurthala police station on the basis of a complaint lodged by Kamaljeet Kaur, wife of Munish Bawa, a resident of Begowal. In her statement to the police, Kamaljeet alleged that Munish Bawa, despite being married, deceitfully married her without revealing his marital status. She further accused Munish, his father Ashwani Kumar and his mother Kusum Bawa of using derogatory remarks related to her caste. Acting on the complaint, the police registered a case against Munish Bawa, Ashwani Kumar and Kusum Bawa, all residents of Begowal.An investigation into the matter is currently underway. 5 held with drug, illicit liquor Car snatched at gunpoint in Begowal Phagwara, May 17 A massive fire broke out in a cluster of shanties near Nadala town on Friday night, reducing eight dwellings to ashes and leaving several families homeless. The fire reportedly originated from a nearby agricultural field where a farmer had set wheat stubble ablaze, which then spread to the slum area due to strong winds and light rain. The incident occurred near the police post on the NadalaBholath road. According to labourers working in local mandi, the fire quickly reached shanties, but workers were able to rescue several residents, including young children. Victims alleged that they approached the nearby police post seeking help, but received no assistance. "We kept pleading with the police, but no one responded," said one of the affected residents. While there were no reported casualties, the fire caused extensive damage. Clothing, cash, stored wheat and other belongings were completely destroyed. However, prompt action by residents helped in removing gas cylinders safely from shanties, preventing a potential explosion. The murder has shocked local residents. So far, no one has come forward to claim the body or report a missing person matching the victim’s description. An FIR was filed at the Our Correspondent Phagwara, May 17 In a series of operations against drug and liquor trafficking, the Kapurthala district police have arrested several individuals and seized narcotics, illicit liquor and cash from different locations. The police apprehended two individuals identified as Jobanjeet Singh, alias Tiger, and Sajan Singh, alias Chhajju, both residents of Sangha village. The police recovered 25 grams of heroin and Rs 11,000 in cash from their possession. In another operation, the Sultanpur Lodhi police arrested Karam Singh, a resident of Lattiawal village. He was found in possession of 1.1 kilograms of poppy husk (Doda Chura). The Kapurthala police arrested Charanjit Singh, a resident of Inder Vihar Colony, and recovered 80 bottles of illicit liquor from his possession. In a raid, the Sultanpur Lodhi police apprehended Major Singh, a resident of Lattiawal, and seized 80 bottles of liquor from his possession. All the accused have been booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985, and the Excise Act. Investigations into the matter are underway. According to a complaint lodged by Rupinder Kaur, wife of Sukhjinder Singh, a resident of Nangal Lubana, she had gone for shopping in the local market along with her daughter Kamalpreet Kaur. While they were out, two unidentified youths approached them, brandished a pistol, and forced them out of their vehicle. The assailants fled the scene with their car. Woman held for selling illicit liquor Phagwara: The Mehatpur police have arrested a woman on the charge of selling illicit liquor. Investigating Officer (IO) Jaspal Singh said 70 bottles of illicit liquor were recovered from the accused, identified as Paramjit Kaur, wife of Jaswant Singh, of Chhana village. The IO said a case was registered against accused and her husband and Rs 23,000 earned by selling liquor was recovered from them . — OC Police solve kidnapping, murdercasewithin24hrs Phagwara, May 17 In a swift and coordinated operation, the Punjab Police have cracked a sensitive kidnapping and murder case within 24 hours, leading to the arrest of seven accused and recovery of two vehicles used in the crime. The breakthrough came after body of an unidentified man was found on May 14 near bushes alongside road close to Majha Petrol Pump at Fattudhinga village in Kapurthala district. While giving details here today, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Gaurav Toora said Inspector Sonamdeep Kaur, Station House Officer (SHO), Fattudhinga police station, received a tip-off about an unidentified body. Upon reaching the spot, the police took possession of the unclaimed body and sent it to the mortuary of the Kapurthala Civil Hospital for identification. During investigation, the police matched body’s description with missing person records and identified the deceased as Sodhi Singh, son of Gurnam Singh, a resident of Sarhali Kalan village in Tarn Taran district. The identity of the deceased was confirmed by his brother Jagraj Singh. Following identification, an FIR was registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita against Jagmohan Singh, a resident of Bhulath village in Kapurthala district, along with several unidentified individuals. The SSP said special an investigation team was formed under the supervision of SP (Detective) Prabhjot Singh Virk and Sub-Divisional Police Officer Gurmeet Singh. The investigative team comprised DSP Parminder Singh, Detective, Kapurthala, Inspector Jarnail Singh, CIA, Kapurthala, Inspector Son- amdeep Kaur, SHO Fattudhinga police station, and Inspector Arjan Singh. Through detailed analysis of the CCTV footage, technical surveillance and human intelligence, the police managed to trace and arrest the main accused, Jagmohan Singh, within 12 hours of launching the investigation. During interrogation, Jagmohan confessed to harbouring a personal grudge against the victim. He allegedly discussed the matter with his brother-in-law Gurnek Singh, a resident of Katarian village in SBS Nagar district. On May 9, Gurnek visited Jagmohan’s home at Bhulath village, where the two reportedly planned abduction and murder of Sodhi Singh. To execute the plan, Gurnek allegedly called a group of accomplices, including his son Pohljeet Singh, Randeep Singh, alias Pinda, Jashanpreet Singh, alias Jassa, Ram Bahadur and Mukhtiar Singh, alias Milan. The group followed Sodhi Singh from near Mundi Morh, forcibly bundled him into a car and severely assaulted him. The accused then took the victim to an isolated location near Garhshankar, where they allegedly killed him on the intervening night of May 9 and 10. On the morning of May 10, around 5 am, Gurnek and Pohljeet allegedly took the victim’s body in a red Chevrolet Tavera (bearing registration number PB 32 G 6440) and dumped it in roadside bushes near Fattudhinga village. The police arrested all seven accused involved in the crime. During investigation, two vehicles, including Tavera and a Swift car, were recovered from the accused. One of the vehicles reportedly belonged to Gurnek and was used in abduction of the victim. — OC
