As per the reports, migrant labourer Ramesh also lost his life when a pole installed outside the MC office fell on him. He got seriously injured and died while he was undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital. The impact could be seen even today when various electricity poles and transformers were found damaged. Even the trees were found to be uprooted at various places. Ruby, a resident of Kishanpura Chowk, said she had a close shave when she was coming back to her home and stuck in storm. “A tree got uprooted and fell right in front of me, it was scary,” she said. One of the residents near BMC Chowk said the top floor of the under-construction building right in front of his house collapsed which resulted in damage at his house as well. “ACs got damaged, such was the impact of the storm,”he said. Even today, there were reports that there was no electricity in some areas and residents were in distress amid extreme hot weather conditions. According to reports, residents of Urban Estate had protested electricity shutdown since hours. PSPCL officials said they received hundreds of complaints yesterday night and the staff remained on their toes to resolve the problems. In Surya Enclave, the power was restored late night. We deal with day-to-day problems with the limited staff, imagine our situation,”an official said. c m y b PHAGWARA, MAY 25 In a road accident near the Dhilwan flyover in Kapurthala late last night, two persons lost their lives and one sustained serious injuries after a speeding Innova collided with a stationary tractor. The car was returning from Ludhiana to Amritsar when the incident occurred. The deceased have been identified as Pankaj Aneja (55), a textile businessman from Amritsar, who was driving the car, and a person believed to have been seated in the front passenger seat. Aneja died on the spot. The third occupant of the vehicle Shashipal, who was seated in the rear seat, sustained critical injuries. He was shifted to a medical facility in Amritsar, where he remains under treatment. Aneja’s brother Ravinder Kumar suffered minor injuries and survived the crash. ASI Dalvinderbir Singh stated that the Innova crashed into the tractor from the driver’s side. The tractor was reportedly parked on the roadside. Following the incident, the police reached the scene and seized both tractor and the sugar beet harvesting machine. Tractor driver Partap Singh of Alewal village in Zira, fled the scene. A migrant from UP and currently living in Ludhiana was daily boarding a train to carry out thefts across villages in Nakodar, Malsian and Shahkot areas. Despite repeated complaints to the police, he had been on the prowl until now. However, this morning a vigilant villager caught him minutes before he was about to board his train to Ludhiana. Identified as Jagdish Prasad, the man was found to be residing in Ludhiana. Two major thefts took place at a gurdwara and a migrant woman’s house on the intervening night of March 20 and 21 after which a slew of thefts followed in the village. Gold, cash, valuables, brass utensils, among other things were stolen from various homes. This morning at 5.30 am, I quizzed a suspicious man with a backpack from whose bag, two big brass plates were recovered. Eventually, he admitted to the crime.
