Amritsar, June 14 After gaining re-entry in the Kapil Sharma show, Navjot Singh Sidhu today visited Amritsar, signalling his political ambition in the next state assembly election. Sidhu will reappear in the comedy show after a gap of six years. He is expecting a similar comeback in politics now. Cricket fans are enthused that they managed to see the former Indian cricketer and cricket commentator, known for power-packed description and catchy one-liners, while watching cricket fixtures but the electorate of Amritsar East assembly segment are not fortunate enough. Talking to mediapersons, Sidhu said, “It is not a new role as I have been pursuing politics for a long time. To earn a living for the family in the right way, I have been making efforts. The day Noni, referring to his wife Dr Navjot Singh Sidhu addresses mediamen in Amritsar on Saturday. Navjot Kaur Sidhu, was to be taken overseas for treatment of cancer, I did not have enough money to foot the bills. It was so because I joined politics to provide clean governance to people and not to fill the pockets. The day somebody will ask me to work for the welfare of people, I will join him.” Accusing the erstwhile governments, he said, “All those governments which governed Punjab for the past three decades were run by the mafia, all protected mafia. Nobody gave the policies to lead the Punjabis.” About its solution, he said an honest person is required to kill this mafia. Without naming the AAP government, he said governments are being run by taking loans these days. He clarified that his mission is politics and Punjab is his love. His close political allies said he would certainly contest the forthcoming election. About his long awaited visit to his constituency, they informed that ward leaders visited and interacted with him. These days, Sidhu is staying in the city and could visit the constituency anytime. The electorate of his home constituency have been waiting for the former PPCC president of whom 32,929 had voted in the 2022 assembly election (coming second as AAP won the seat) and voted him to power in the 2017 election. He did not visit them after the 2022 election. He paid a visit today at a tea shop in the Civil Lines area but did not visit his home constituency. Similarly, a section of the local Congress leaders are irked at Sidhu for not canvassing for the Congress nominee from the Amritsar Lok Sabha seat, Gurjeet Singh Aujla, who won the election. Woman among 11 nabbed with heroin in Tarn Taran MC’s much-publicised stray dog sterilisation campaign comes under fire for poor implementation, irregularities Our Correspondent Amritsar, June 14 The much-publicised dog sterilisation drive initiated by the Municipal Corporation Amritsar (MCA) has come under fire for serious irregularities, poor implementation and lack of transparency. Despite official claims that over 27,000 stray dogs have been sterilised since 2022, there is no visual or documentary evidence to support these numbers, raising questions over the authenticity of the drive. Two Animal Birth Control (ABC) centres, one in Naraiangarh, Chheharta, and the other in Fatehgarh Shukarchak, were set up by the MCA to undertake sterilisation procedures. How- Tarn Taran, June 14 The police have arrested 11 persons, including a woman, with 711 gm of heroin, two pistols and three cartridges from different places of the city. The police said here on Saturday that a team of the city police led by SubInspector Gurvinder Singh arrested two carborne persons with 505 gm heroin, two pistols, including a Glock with no cartridge, and three cartridges. The police also impounded the car they were travelling in. Sub-Inspector Gurvinder Singh said the accused were arrested from the Jarmastpur village bridge on the night of June 11, but a case was registered on June 13. The accused, identified as Damanpreet Singh, alias Daman Lahoria, of Jandiala Guru and Nishan Singh of Khakh (Verowal) have been booked under relevant sections of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropics Substance (NDPS) Act and the Arms Act. A team of the Patti police led by Sub-Inspector Manpreet Kaur on Friday arrested Chanan Singh and Kulwinder Kaur, residents of Ward No.13, Patti, with 105 gm of heroin. Charanjit Singh Teja Tribune News Service As of now, only 10-20 dogs are sterilised per day against the original target of 50. ever, both centres lack CCTV cameras, and there is no mandatory videography of operations. As a result, there is no verifiable record that the procedures are being carried out as claimed. In the absence of monitoring, the civic body records the daily numbers on paper without ensuring actual on-ground verification. The municipal staff relies on the disposal of Extortion accused attacks cops, injured in retaliatory firing Pawan K Jaiswar removed reproductive organs (ovaries and fallopian tubes) as indirect proof of sterilisation, but even this process is bypassed, as these biological remains are immediately sent to biomedical waste disposal without inspection. Another issue plaguing the drive is gender disparity in operations. Fewer female dogs are sterilised due to higher procedural costs. While sterilising a male dog costs around Rs 1,100, the expense for a female dog rises to Rs 1,500 or more. This cost-cutting has led to more unsterilised female dogs giving birth, further aggravating the stray dog population. Mayor Jatinder Singh Moti Bhatia has now assured to review the project and make the required changes. “We will install CCTV cameras at all sterilisation centres and record videos of each operation. Dog shelter homes will also be set up for post-operative care,” he stated. He also announced the release of a new tender to accelerate the pace of the sterilisation drive and assured that he would personally monitor the process to ensure accountability. As of now, only 10-20 dogs are sterilised per day, against the original target of 50. However, experts warn that with over 50 puppies reportedly born daily, the Municipal Corporation must ramp up operations to 100 sterilisation procedures per day to effectively control the stray dog menace in the city.
