Ludhiana, June 24 The results for the Ludhiana West bypoll were declared on Monday, giving much happiness to the winning camp. At the same time, 11 out of total 14 candidates, who had filed their nomination papers for the byelection, failed to save their security deposits, which were forfeited. SAD candidate Parupkar Singh Ghuman has also lost his security deposit as he needed over 6,600 more votes to secure the same. Confirming this, Returning Officer Roopinder Singh said barring AAP candidate Sanjeev Arora, BJP candidate Jiwan Gupta and Congress candidate Bharat Bhushan Ashu, all other 11 candidates had their security deposits forfeited. A candidate had to get at least 14,897 votes out of the total 89,367 polled, which makes a share of 16.67 per cent. All those candidates who failed to get the required votes polled in their favour, will forfeit their security, which is around Rs 10,000. One of the leaders in the SAD, wishing not to be quoted, said it was shocking that a SAD candidate failed to get sufficient votes in his favour and lost security deposit in the election. “The party has to think on it in a critical manner, what has put a real dent? If it was infighting with Manpreet Ayali, who developed frictions with SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal or was it the urban Hindu committed vote, which did not vote for Akalis, etc,” said the leader, adding that Ghuman left no stone unturned as far as the campaigning was concerned. Many other candidates had to borrow money to deposit the security. The other candidates who lost security deposits included Renu, Neetu Shattran Wala, Jatinder Kumar Sharma, Navneet Kumar Gopi, Albert Dua, Gurdeep Singh Kahlon, Paramjit Singh Bharaj, Pawandeep Singh, Baldev Raj Katna and Rajesh Sharma. Harkamal Kaur, DSP (D) Inderjit Singh Boparai and Dakha DSP Varinder Khosa, had helped in cracking the case in which three miscreants had abducted a taxi driver from Ludhiana in the wee hours of Monday and thrown his body in the Abohar branch of the Sirhind canal near Tuggal village after killing him. The suspects hired the car on the pretext of going to Raikot town. The vehicle was later found parked at Mohi village near Sudhar. “Having received a tipoff about the incident and movement of the car in the Sudhar area, we deployed teams to rescue the victim and nab the suspects,” said Gupta, claiming that they were arrested from different places on Monday, Though the police are yet to ascertain the exact sequence of events leading to the murder, preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects had killed the victim with an ulterior motive of looting cash, valuables and the car. However, they killed the victim on finding that he had no cash and valuables with him and left the bloodstained car at Mohi village after sensing that they were being followed. Earlier, Narinder Kaur of Asha Puri Colony in the Agar Nagar area had informed the police that the suspects had allegedly abducted and assaulted her husband Gurmeet Singh after hiring his taxi from a taxi stand near Grand Walk Mall here around 2.30 am on Monday. The victim had sent a live location to one of his friends Raminder Singh Laddi, which showed that his mobile got switched off when checked about 3.40 am after the vehicle reaching Hissewal village near Mullanpur. Most of the vehicles were of AAP workers and supporters who had gathered in good numbers to make the event successful. Naren Jain, a commuter, who had come to get fuel refilled from a petrol station on the road, said it was a maddening experience as vehicles were parked here and there and he found it too difficult to move on the main road. The traffic moved at a snail’s pace due to rush of the parked vehicles under the bridge. Shopkeepers in Ghumar Mandi have expressed happiness that now no roadshows would be held in connection with political rallies. “We can’t park our vehicles near shops. Vehicles of workers are parked in streets. Footfall of customers also decline due to the same,” rued a shopkeeper dealing in footwear in Ghumar Mandi. The authorities had deployed 400 police personnel on duty during the road show and commuters from Ghumar Mandi to Aarti Chowk had to either take alternative routes or avoid the particular stretch till the roadshow was over. Says AAP had promised if he was chosen, govt will take good steps for bizmen Shivani Bhakoo Tribune News Service Ludhiana, June 24 While Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) candidate Sanjeev Arora has now become the MLA from the Ludhiana West constituency, industrialists in the city pin high hopes as not only Arora but all prominent leaders in AAP had promised to the industry that if Arora was chosen, the government would take good steps for the industry. It hopes that Arora would become a minister and there would be some representation from Ludhiana to voice their concerns to the state government. Talking to The Tribune, president of the Knitwear and Apparel Manufacturers Association of Ludhiana Sudershan Jain said with Arora coming to power, industrialists would be able to convey their sentiments to the state government through him. “Earlier, nobody was responsive, Arora listens to our genuine demands, tries to get issues resolved. In the present scenario, China and Bangladesh are leaving the textile industry, which is now going towards other small countries. We have capabilities but till now, only cotton fabric/ garment is being manufactured in India, it is the time to switch over to woollens now. Ludhiana is known for woollens, then why cant we get bulk orders? It is only that we need a boost from both state and Central governments and we hope that Arora would be instrumental in getting benefits to the industry,” he said. President of the Chamber of Industrial and Commercial Undertakings (CICU) Upkar Singh said the state was facing an acute problem of erratic power supply. “The industry suffers badly due to regular power pangs. In case strong winds blow, the power supply is hit. They should arrange for better infrastructure. We hope the new MLA would get the issue resolved. And secondly, the industry is suffering at the hands of the PSIEC, it should be taken care of. The PSIEC must not put additional financial burden on plot holders when they are supposed to sell the plots,” he said. The executive committee of the Association of Trade and Industrial Undertakings (ATIU) held a meeting to congratulate Sanjeev Arora on winning the Ludhiana West byelection. Pankaj Sharma, president, ATIU, requested him to work for the overall development of the city, especially for the industry. He requested the MLA to resolve all pending issues of the industry, especially those which are pending for a long time. Sharma said the focus should be on the improvement of infrastructure, especially roads and sewer. “Sewer lines are found choked most of the time due to faulty design. There is no dedicated jet machines or pumps for industrial areas. Roads don’t last long and develop potholes soon, espe- cially during the rainy season. Most of the telephone lines are found dead during rainy days due to faulty designs. There seems to be no coordination among departments concerned. The industry demands that a dedicated office and a zone should be made for the industrial areas where tax collected from units situated in these zones should be spent on development of these areas only,” he added. President of the United Cycle and Parts Manufacturers’ Association (UCPMA) Charanjit Vishkarma said they see a good future ahead. “The industry is hopeful that AAP will do the best to please the industry as in 2027, they would again try to come to power. We have high hopes from Arora. He has been with the industry for long, he knows our problems well and will definitely take up our issues like coming up with an exhibition centre, starting of halwara airport, etc,” he said.
