As many as 47 tablets were recovered from a youth Nitish of village Sangh-Dhesian near Goraya, who was nabbed at a nakabandi. A case under the NDPS Act has been registered against the accused. In another case, the police arrested two more 'drug smugglers' Manpreet and Deepak and recovered 120 tablets from their possession. Both accused were apprehended at a check point under the NDPS Act. OC YOUTH ARRESTED WITH INTOXICANTS Phagwara: The Rawalpindi police apprehended a youth in possession of intoxicating capsules and tablets, registering a case under the NDPS Act. Phagwara SP Rupinder Kaur Bhatti informed the media that police personnel intercepted a young man near Rihana Jattan during a routine check. Upon searching him, cops recovered 48 intoxicating capsules and 20 tablets suspected to be narcotics. The accused has been identified as Abhinav Sharma of Mohalla Nohrian, Garhshankar. OC FOUR BOOKED FOR ASSAULT Phagwara: The Lohian Khas police have booked four persons on the charge of assaulting a Moga resident. The accused have been identified as Jassa Singh of Chakpiply village and his three accomplices. Paramjit Singh of Fateh Garhpanjtoor village in Moga complained to the police that he was driving an autorickshaw and was going to Ismailpur village with passengers on June 15 when the accused Jassa Singh waylaid him near Kakar Kalan village and his three accomplices attacked him and injured him. OC FOUR HELD FOR DRUG PEDDLING Phagwara: The Shahkot police have arrested a drug peddler on the charge of selling heroin. Four gram of heroin was recovered from the possession of the accused Meetu, alias Meeta of Malsian. The Nakodar Sadar police arrested 'drug peddler' Joga Singh of Billi Chao village with 15 intoxicating tablets. The police arrested two Ajay and Anthoni of Malrri village with 115 intoxicating tablets. oc VILLAGER BOOKED FOR HOMICIDE Phagwara: The Shahkot police have booked a villager on the charge of culpable homicide. SAD leaders, going to Mohali, put under house arrest Our Correspondent Hoshiarpur, July 2 SAD leaders, who were going to protest in Mohali in support of senior Akali leader Bikram Singh Majithia, were stopped at different places by the district police this morning and put under house arrest. As soon as the morning broke, the doorbells of the houses of Akali leaders started ringing and as soon as the doors opened, police officers went inside and told the Akali leaders, who were getting ready to go to Mohali, that they had been put under house arrest. Meanwhile, district president of Shiromani Akali Dal Lakhvinder Singh Lakhi was arrested at his home in village ‘Giljian’. Also SAD district urban chief Kulwant Singh Manan and Hoshiarpur incharge Jitinder Singh Lali Bajwa were kept under house arrest in Bhagat Singh Nagar. Nawanshahr, July 2 Residents of Mahalon village of Nawanshahr are up in arms against the state government for its alleged proposal to acquire 383 acres of land under the land pooling scheme being floated by the Greater Ludhiana Area Development Authority. The residents on Wednesday lodged a protest and even handed over a memorandum on the issue to Nawanshahr Deputy Commissioner Ankurjeet Singh. Sarpanch of the village Nachhatar Kaur said the land in the village was much fertile and farmers are reaping three crops a year in the village. She said, “The livelihood of hundreds of farmers and farm labourers is dependent on this land. The entire village population will be affected by one decision of the government which we shall oppose tooth and nail”. Raj Kumar, Resham Kumar, Gurpreet Singh and Kulwinder Kaur, all panches of the village, said they had given a memorandum to the Residents protest in front of the DC office in Nawanshahr on Wednesday against the acquisition of 383 acres of land in Mahalon village under GLADA’s land pooling scheme. Bid on RTI activist’s Nakas set up to step up vigil life in Model Town 6.5qt of ‘beef’ seized in village, 5 detained Tribune News Service Phagwara, July 2 Tensions rose along the Phagwara-Goraya road this evening after the police recovered 6.5 quintals of suspected beef from a cold store located behind a prominent roadside eatery, Jyoti Vaishno Dhaba, in Chachoki village near Phagwara. Acting on a specific information received by members of the Shiv Sena, Bajrang Dal and Gau Raksha Dal, a group of activists arrived at the location and discovered a deep-freeze unit at the rear of the dhaba where meat was being stored and packed by 6–7 workers. Leaders, including Inderjit Karwal (vice-president, Shiv Sena Punjab), Harsh Bhalla, Darshan, Gurpreet, Deepak Bhardwaj and others reached the site and alerted the police, Tribune News Service Jalandhar, July 2 City-based RTI activist Simranjit Singh had a narrow escape when two youths fired gunshots at him while he was coming out of a gym in Model Town. Simranjit Singh said he came out of the gym at his usual time of 9:15 pm and was just about to sit in his vehicle when two youths came in front of him and one of them fired shots at him. “They missed the shots. Luckily, when the assailant re-loaded his pistol to fire again, the bullet got stuck in the pistol”, said the activist. Simranjit said he got the time to return to the gym. “During this, I even fell down Shots fired at him near a gym, but he escapes and got slightly hurt. But the assailants did not follow me to the gym for they were perhaps aware that it was still crowded”, he said, adding that he immediately called the police. Jalandhar, July 2 In a proactive move to strengthen law and order in the city, Commissioner of Police Dhanpreet Kaur, along with other senior police officers, has implemented special security measures across Jalandhar. Over 10 hi-tech and strategically positioned nakas (check-points) have been set up to maintain the heightened vigilance against anti-social elements. The CP said the purpose of this nakabandi is to enforce law and order, monitor the movement of suspicious individuals and regulate traffic. More than 200 police personnel have been deployed at these nakas under the supervision of gazetted officers. They have been instructed to carry out extensive check- ing of all suspicious vehicles and take preventive action against individuals displaying suspicious behaviour. Key locations, including Rama Mandi Chowk, BMC Chowk, Pathankot Chowk, Workshop Chowk and Pragpur Point, are under high surveillance. Senior police officials also patrolled busy marketplaces in Jalandhar and interacted with the deployed personnel to assess on-ground readiness. “To ensure foolproof security, all gazetted officers and SHOs have been directed to remain on field duty,” she added. The CP has also appealed to the public to remain vigilant and immediately report any suspicious activity via Police Helpline 112. demanding action. Responding swiftly, a team of the police arrived on the spot and took charge of the situation. Police officials confirmed that five individuals were taken into custody for questioning. “A veterinary team has been constituted to collect and examine meat samples to determine its nature,” said DSP Bharat Bhushan. He further stated that action will be taken based on the test results and an FIR is expected to be registered shortly. It was learnt that beef was being sent to Kashmir for a long time. OC Mother of infant dies by suicide; 8 pupils hurt as auto hits stray animal, overturns husband, in-laws booked Our Correspondent In depression, man shoots himself Tribune News Service Nawanshahr, July 2 In a shocking incident, a young woman, mother of an infant, died by suicide at Banga, Nawanshahr, on Tuesday. On a complaint by the deceased’s mother Balwinder Kaur, the police filed a case of abetment of suicide against in-laws and husband of the victim. According to the complaint filed by the mother, her daughter had got married to Harpreet Singh in 2022. “Within a year, they had problems in their marriage and the husband and in-laws would often taunt her and problems were increasing and their married life was a mess, “ she alleged. “In 2024, my daughter gave birth to a baby boy, but the problems only increased between them,” the mother further said in her complaint. “I had recently gone to their house to make them understand that they should remain happy. My daughter told me that her husband was asking her to give her divorce and take Rs 15 lakh in return. When I came back and called my daughter, she didn’t answer. After a few hours, her motherin-law called me saying that she had consumed some poisonous substance and during treatment, she died”. The Nawanshahr police filed case against Harpreet Singh and in-laws under Section 108 of the BNS. As per information, the husband has been arrested. Phagwara, July 2 A man has shot himself dead as he was suffering from acute depression following dispute with his wife at the local Inder Vihar locality today. Kapurthala DSP Deep Karan Singh confirmed the death. The police identified the deceased as Sukhchain Singh (48) of Kapurthala. The police said the deceased had a dispute with his wife and his wife had gone to his parents a few days ago. The deceased went to his inlaws house and severely beaten up her and the police had registered a case following complaint by his wife. The police said he fired at himself from an illegal weapon. OC c m y b Phagwara, July 2 Eight schoolchildren were injured on Wednesday morning after an auto-rickshaw carrying them to school overturned after colliding with a stray animal near Bishanpur village in Kapurthala district. Four of the students sustained serious injuries and are undergoing treatment at the Civil Hospital. According to witnesses, the auto was en route to Kendriya Vidyalaya with 15 students on board when a stray animal suddenly crossed the road. The driver lost control in an attempt to avoid the animal, leading to the collision and the vehicle overturning. Local residents quickly responded to the scene, helping evacuate the injured children and transporting them to the hospital. Dr Ashish Pal, the on-duty physician at the hospital, confirmed that all eight injured students were admitted to the emergency ward. “Four students have sustained serious injuries and are undergoing CT scans and X-rays. The remaining four are being treated for minor injuries,” he said. The police are investigating the incident and have not ruled out overloading as a contributing factor as the auto was carrying 15 students at the time of the accident. One dies, 2 hurt as bike falls into pit A man was killed and two others seriously injured after their motorcycle plunged into a deep pit at a bridge construction site between Ahmedpur and Athoula in Kapurthala district late Tuesday night. The deceased has been identified as Sukhwinder Singh, while the injured include Hardeep Singh and his son Jujhar Singh, residents of Iban village. Hardeep Singh, a carpenter, was returning home on a motorcycle along with Sukhwinder and Jujhar when the accident occurred. According to Hardeep, the construction site lacked basic safety measures. “There was no lighting, no warning signs and no barricading at the location. We didn’t see the deep pit in the darkness, and our bike fell straight into it,” he told reporters from his hospital bed. All three were trapped in the pit and were rescued with great difficulty. They were rushed to the Civil Hospital in Kapurthala. Dr Ashish Pal confirmed that Sukhwinder Singh succumbed to his injuries during treatment. The condition of Hardeep Singh and his son is reported to be stable. Woman killed in accident near Jalandhar A road accident late Tuesday night claimed the life of a young woman near village Johlan on Hoshiarpur Road in Jalandhar’s Rama Mandi. The collision occurred between a motorcycle and an SUV, resulting in the death of the motorcyclist. The deceased has been identified as Amandeep Kaur, a resident of Nangal Fateh Khan village in Jalandhar district. Police officials reached the spot shortly after the accident and took possession of the body. ASI Vipin Randhawa, who is leading the investigation, confirmed that the incident occurred late at night and that the woman died on the spot. “It is not yet clear who was at fault in the accident. Statements have been recorded and further investigation is ongoing,” he said. The body has been sent to the Civil Hospital in Jalandhar for the post-mortem examination. The police have informed the family and are in the process of filing an FIR once preliminary findings are confirmed. The Rama Mandi police are continuing to investigate the circumstances leading to the fatal crash.
