Nakodar DSP Sukhpal Singh, IO, said that the accused had been identified as Jaskaran Veer Singh of Sanghe Jagir village. Ram Dass of Mahunwal village, had complained to Jalandhar (Rural) SSP that he gave Rs 4.91 lakh to the accused for facilitating his nephew’s migration to England. However, neither did he send his nephew abroad, nor did he return the money.TNS MAN HELD WITH ILLICIT LIQUOR Phagwara: The Nakodar Sadar police have arrested a villager on the charge of selling illicit liquor. Investigating officer Janak Raj said that 65 bottles of illicit country-made liquor were seized from the possession of the accused, identified as Jogindar Lal, a resident of Rayeebwal village. A case under Sections 61/1/14 of the Excise Act has been registered against the accused. TNS WOMAN ASSAULTED, TWO HELD Phagwara: The Mehatpur police have arrested two miscreants on the charge of outraging the modesty of a woman. Kashmir Singh (IO) said that the accused had been identified as Jagdev Singh and Lovepreet Singh, both residents of Maherru village. Surindar Kaur (45), wife of Jaskaran Singh of the same village, had complained to the police that the accused and their accomplices assaulted, threatened and outraged her modesty and even snatched her gold chain. TNS TWO PEDDLERS ARRESTED Phagwara: The Shahkot police have arrested a drug peddler on the charge of selling heroin. Sukhwindar Pal Singh (IO) said that 26 gm of heroin and Rs 22,000 drug money were seized from the accused, identified as Karan of Pati Akalpur, Malsian village. A case has been registered. In another case the Nakodar City police have arrested drug peddler Amandeep of Mohalla Kamalpura, with 28 intoxicant tablets. TNS PISTOL, 5 BULLETS SEIZED, 1 HELD Hoshiarpur: Model Town police here have arrested a person after his vehicle was searched at a naka and a pistol and five cartridges seized from him. According to information, the police said that during the naka near Prabhat Chowk, a Tata Safari was stopped and searched, and the arms seized. The accused has been identified as Pritpal Singh of Meghowal Ganjiyan. The vehicle has been impounded. TNS TWO BUFFALOES ELECTROCUTED Hoshiarpur: Two buffoloes grazing in a residential area in Shankar Nagar got electrocuted from a transformer pole. According to information, due to rain there was a sudden current flow in the transformer pole installed there, electrocuting the two buffaloes. Officers and employees of the Electricity Department reached the spot and immediately stopped the power supply of the transformer. TNS ‘Beef’ processing case: Two more held; cold storage, dhaba sealed Ashok Kaura Phagwara, July 5 Two more persons have been arrested in connection with a suspected illegal beef processing and distribution racket in Phagwara late on Thursday. One of the suspects reportedly has links to Vijay Basant, husband of an AAP councillor, while the other is Hussan Lal. They have been taken into custody and produced before a local magistrate on Saturday. Both have been sent to five-day police custody. The arrests follow a major raid conducted earlier on Friday evening at a cold storage unit and a roadside eatery, Jyoti Dhaba, near Chachoki village. Based on a tip-off, the police seized approximately 29 quintal and 32 kgs of suspected beef from the premises. The authorities have since sealed both locations and initiated legal proceedings under relevant sections of the law. After the attack, the attackers fled the spot in the darkness of the night. The samiti has held stone-crusher owners in the Kandi area and the illegal mining mafia responsible for the attack. Later, it held a protest on the Talwara-Daulatpur road, demanding arrest of the assailants. Samiti leader Subedar Captain (retd) Manohar Lal Mangu Maira said that late on Friday he was sitting inside his shop when four persons, who came on two motorcycles, forcefully entered the shop and attacked him with sticks and sharp-edged weapons and seriously injured him. During this, they also kept saying that “you say that you will not rest until the crushers are closed, so we have come to teach you a lesson”. Pradesh. The delegation cited concerns over national security and potential links to broader illegal networks. Leaders from the Shiromani Akali Dal and Hindu organisations also condemned the incident and demanded that the full extent of the alleged cow slaughter racket be uncovered. Law enforcement agencies have assured that the investigation will be conducted thoroughly and impartially, with no leniency for those found complicit. The seized meat has been sent for laboratory analysis, and results are awaited. Meanwhile, investigations continue into the source of the meat, the network’s financing and potential interstate or international links. 3 killed in road accidents Hoshiarpur, July 5 Three persons, including a two-and-half-year-old child, died in three road accidents in the area. Saab Singh of Purhiran said that he was going home on his bike with his brother Dildeep Singh around 9 pm yesterday when another bike rider hit them near Bhim Nagar due to which they got injured. At the hospital, the doctors present there declared his brother dead. In another case, Maninder Singh of Shergarh said his father Santokh Singh was coming on his Activa when a car hit him near Purhiran bypass. He said his father died during treatment. In the third case, Saurabh of Dugri Awana village said he and his son Gaurav were returning home on their bike when a car hit them, killing his son on the spot. The driver, Sarvjit Kaur, of Gurdaspur has been arrested.— OC Vehicle falls into canal; boy dies, mother injured Garhshankar, July 5 A Mahindra Pick Up lost control and fell into the Bist Doab Canal near Rawalpindi village while trying to save stray animals, which came in front of it, due to which a minor died while his mother got seriously injured. According to information, Rakesh Kumar, a resident of Kaihri, Badaun district (UP), and currently a resident of Nangal Khurd (Mahilpur), said that about 30-32 of persons were going back to their village in Uttar Pradesh in the vehicle after sowing paddy. When they had just reached near Rawalpindi village, a stray animal came in front of the vehicle. To save it, the driver turned away the vehicle, only to find another one in front of it. While saving it, the driver lost control over the vehicle and it fell into the canal. His 14-year-old son Akash died, while his wife Geeta got seriously injured. Other passengers escaped with minor injuries. The vehicle was being driven by Manoj, also a resident of Badaun. The victims said that all their belongings, mobile phones and cash were washed away. A passerby informed the Garhshankar police and ASI Mahinder Pal reached the spot along with police personnel and extracted the people out of the vehicle. The ASI said that migrant labourers from Hoshiarpur were returning to Uttar Pradesh, gathering their friends from different places, and near Rawalpindi the Pick Up fell into the canal. Doctors there referred him to Civil Hospital, Mukerian, from where he was taken to Jalandhar due to his critical condition. Demanding the arrest of the accused in the case, the samiti, along with the people of the area, sat on a dharna, blocking the Talwara-Daulatpur road. The overnight traffic jam continued during the day for 18 hours. Police officials tried to persuade the protesters to lift the blockade, but they were adamant on not lifting it until the attackers were arrested. Talwara police, then, forcibly got the blockade lifted by taking the protesting leaders into custody in the afternoon. After this, the samiti started a sit-in in front of Talwara police station in the evening to get the detained leaders released unconditionally. The protest was continuing till the time of filing of the news and the protesters were adamant on not lifting it until their demand was met. Jalandhar can become model city in sports development: Pillay Tribune News Service Jalandhar, July 5 Indian hockey legend and Padma Shri awardee Dhanraj Pillay was in Jalandhar today, where he met Hockey India vice-president Nitin Kohli to discuss future strategies for sports development, youth empowerment and social responsibility. Pillay stressed that efforts at the grassroots level were needed to uplift hockey in Punjab. He said that Jalandhar could once again become a model city in sports development, for which changes in public policy and support of the government were required. The former Indian hockey captain emphasised that Punjab had abundant sports talent, but it needed guidance, infrastructure and platforms. “Sports should not be seen just as a competition. It has the potential of becoming a tool of transformation for youth. A leader who can translate sporting experience into impactful policy making can be a big boost for the city,” said Pillay, referring to Kohli, who is now also the AAP halqa incharge of Jalandhar Central Assembly seat. Sharing his vision, Pillay said that focus should be on nurturing the talent of young hockey players who have represented India at national and international levels. He also stressed the need of providing players with facilities, coaching and opportunities. “That’s what the sports ecosystem needs to flourish,” he said. The Tribune, the largest selling daily in North India, publishes news and views without any bias or prejudice of any kind. Restraint and moderation, rather than agitational language and partisanship, are the hallmarks of the paper. It is an independent newspaper in the real sense of the term.
The English edition apart, the 133-year-old Tribune has two sister publications, Punjabi Tribune (in Punjabi) and Dainik Tribune (in Hindi).
