OC House no 0 in Defence Colony has 7 voters Cong leader finds major discrepancy during verification of voter lists | Party plans awareness drives Deepkamal Kaur Tribune News Service Jalandhar, September 16 Ever heard a house no. 0 (zero) in any colony. The EC’s electoral roll does have this unique house number in the posh Defence Colony falling in the Jalandhar Cantonment Assembly segment. There are seven voters enrolled at this unheard of and non-existent address. Angad Dutta, secretary, Punjab Youth Congress, said he laid hands on this major discrepancy while verifying the voter list as per the directions of the high command. “I chose to start with my own colony. I reside in Defence Colony. I was shocked to see The Defence Colony voter list shows discrepancy in Jalandhar. that H.No. 0 existed on the official records of our colony. At the outset, I thought that there could have been a mis- DRUG PEDDLER ARRESTED Phagwara: The police have arrested three individuals in separate drug-related incidents. Even more unbelievable was that all of them seemed unrelated and that Ajit Kumar Yadav is mentioned as the son of Dalip Singh. The PYC secretary said the verification of voter lists had been initiated on the directions of national in-charge Krishna Allavaru, National Youth Congress president Uday Bhanu Chib, and national general secretary and Punjab in-charge Dr Smruti Ranjan Lenka. He further appealed to all Youth Congress leaders and the youth of Punjab to carefully verify voter lists in their respective areas. Any discrepancies or fake entries, he emphasised, should be reported on votechoriroko.in — a platform launched by Rahul Gandhi to fight against voter fraud. The Punjab Youth Congress has also planned awareness drives, signature campaigns, and protests to highlight the issue of electoral manipulation and ensure that every genuine vote is protected. “Together, we must expose vote theft and protect democracy. It is our responsibility to safeguard the rights of every citizen,” Dutta added. Death of ex-MP’s sonAccused Hindu leader attacked, 2 rounded up Vishu’s family pleads for justice Our Correspondent Tribune News Service Jalandhar, September 16 A day after it came to the fore that businessman Vishu Kapoor too has been booked for the accident and death of Jalandhar ex-MP Mohinder Singh Kaypee’s son Richie Kaypee, his family on Tuesday pleaded for justice. The police on Monday deployed cops at the private hospital where Vishu, his wife Shelly Kapoor and daughter Rajvi Kapoor have been under treatment. The Grand Vitara, which Vishu was driving, had also collided with Richie’s Fortuner, then rammed into a staircase and railings of a showroom in Model Town on Saturday night. Vishu and Gursharan Singh Prince (second accused who is on the run since his Creta had hit the Fortuner) have been booked under Section 281 (rash or negligent driving, 125 (a) (act endangering human 'My son an accident victim too, wrongly made accused' Sudha Kapoor life), 125 (b) (act endangering life/personal safety), 105 (causing death by rash or negligent act) and 324 (4) (mischief causing damage) of the BNS. Sudha Kapoor, mother of Vishu Kapoor, said, “My son is himself a victim of the accident. My son, his wife and their daughter were all unconscious in the car after the accident. We do not even know who brought them to the hospital. We have seen videos of the accident. The Creta had collided with the Fortuner, which had turned and then hit into my son’s car. So how can my son be an accused? We have all sympathies with the Kaypee family as they lost a youthful son. But it is wrong for the police to add the name of my son in the accident even though he was no where at fault.” Meanwhile, the last rites of Richie were performed today at Model Town cremation ground. Leaders of all political parties, social activists and people from all walks of life attended his cremation. PPCC chief Amarinder S Raja Warring, Jalandhar LS MP Charanjit S Channi and Congress MLA Sukhwinder Kotli were among those who visited his residence to offer condolences. Kaypee had left the Congress to join SAD in 2022. DACOITY ACCUSED HELD AFTER 11 YRS Phagwara: The Nakodar police have arrested a proclaimed offender (PO) who had been absconding for 11 years. But when I delved deeper, I realised that no one with seven names mentioned against this house resided in our colony”, he said. Dutta said, “Defence Colony is a well-established colony since decades. I also enquired it with my neighbours, and no one has ever heard of such a house. This is clear evidence of fake entries being added to the voter list. Such manipulation is nothing less than an attack on our democratic rights”. Showing a copy of the voter list downloaded from the ECI portal, Dutta also gave out the names of those listed as voters at H.No. 7. The list had the names of Iqbal Singh (60, male), Ajit Kumar Yadav (53, Few paddy arrival, mandis wear deserted look Excessive rainfall has delayed harvesting process Aakanksha N Bhardwaj Tribune News Service Jalandhar, September 16 Despite the official launch of paddy procurement across Punjab on Tuesday, no significant arrival of the crop was reported in mandis across Jalandhar district. Only a minimal quantity was received at the Bhogpur mandi, officials confirmed. When The Tribune team visited the main grain market, Jalandhar, this morning, there were no farmers present with their produce. The grain market wore a deserted look with a few labourers around. An arhtiya (commission agent) at the mandi said the arrivals were likely to begin within four or five days. “All arrangements in the mandi have been made. However, the bulk arrival of paddy is expected only after 10 to 15 days,” he added. Officials and farmers attributed the delay in the arrivals primarily to the recent spell of heavy rainfall in the region, which has impacted the drying process of the paddy. Tarsem Singh, a farmer from Nakodar, said the excessive rainfall has delayed the harvesting process. “Had it not rained so heavily, harvesting would have begun by now. It will take at least another week for my paddy crop to mature properly,” he said. Deputy Commissioner Himanshu Aggarwal had earlier instructed mandi officials to ensure that all essential facilities, including drinking water, electricity, lighting, sanitation, and toilets, are in place for the convenience of farmers. He also appealed to farmers to bring their produce to the mandis only after properly drying it, as per government guidelines, to avoid procurement delays. With favourable weather and drying conditions expecting in the coming days, officials are hopeful that procurement operations will pick up momentum soon. c m y b Phagwara, September 16 In a late-night incident, prominent Hindu leader and state vice-president of the Anti-Terrorist Front Lali Bhaskar was attacked near Shri Satyanarayan Bazaar. Bhaskar, who also heads the Brahmin Sabha, sustained serious injuries and was rushed to the Civil Hospital, where doctors later declared his condition stable and out of danger. Bhaskar stated that the assault occurred around 10 pm while he was returning home from the market. A speeding car passed dangerously close to him, prompting him to ‘shout’ at the driver. This led to a heated exchange, during which several youths in the car began hurling abuses. Moments later, they allegedly attacked him with iron rods. Bhaskar further claimed that after a phone call was made, two more individuals arrived on motorcycles and joined in the assault. “I do not know the attackers,” Bhaskar told reporters from his hospital bed, adding that he had previously received death threats and even written to the Punjab DGP regarding the threats. The police swiftly reached the scene following the incident. DSP (Sub-Division) Deepkaran Singh confirmed that two suspects, believed to be among the motorcycleborne attackers, have been rounded up for questioning. “The victim’s statement has been recorded and further investigation is underway,” said the City Police Station SHO.
