The initiative has been taken under the guidance of Mayor Inderjit Kaur and the campaign will start from October 14 onwards. The first major event will be held at BCM Arya Senior Secondary School, Shastri Nagar, following which awareness campaigns would be held in schools across the city. The Mayor conducted a meeting in this regard at her camp office on Wednesday and issued necessary directions to the officials concerned. Demonstrations,awareness skits, etc, would be prepared and students be made aware of different solid waste management techniques such as segregation of dry and wet waste, home compositing, recycling waste, etc. The civic body will also honour selected students as ‘Swachhta Champions’, who would further work as ambassadors for promoting cleanliness and hygiene. She said NGOs were also being involved in the awareness campaign. A mechanism was being put in place wherein residents would be able to lodge complaints regarding cleanliness and the civic body would also get feedback from them. Inderjit Kaur said the civic body was making regular efforts to improve solid waste management in the city but the goal could not be achieved without active participation of residents. The campaign ‘My Waste, My Responsibility’ aims to encourage residents in doing their bit to bring in a positive change in society. The Mayor also appealed to residents to step forward in large numbers and transform the campaign into a mass movement for ensuring sustainable development. Ludhiana, October 8 To ensure smooth movement of traffic in busy markets of the city during the ongoing festival season, Senior Deputy Mayor Rakesh Prashar supervised a joint anti-encroachment drive conducted by the traffic police and tehbazaari wing of the Municipal Corporation (MC) in Chaura Bazaar and nearby areas on Wednesday. During the drive, action was taken against shopkeepers and vendors encroaching upon road portions beyond the yellow line. Prashar said they had conducted a number of meetings with associations of different markets in the city in the recent past. Shopkeepers and vendors were directed to install their stalls and vends within the yellow line so that encroachments on road portions did not become a hindrance in the smooth movement of traffic. On Wednesday, a drive in the Chaura Bazaar area was conducted to take stock of the situation at the ground level and action was taken against violators. He said the civic body did not want to take action against any shopkeeper or vendor during the festival season but stern action would be taken in case there was any hindrance to traffic movement. HIMANSHU MAHAJAN Ludhiana, October 8 After a suspect was captured in CCTV cameras allegedly doing recce of the house of Punjab’s Shahi Imam Maulana Mohammad Usman Ludhianvi, the police started a probe into the matter. Mohammad Mustkim, a private secretary of the Shahi Imam, said Shahi Imam’s home was on Brown Road. The Shahi Imam was in Maharashtra for three days. When he returned on Monday night and checked the CCTV footage, he found a stranger roaming around his house for several hours. The man was first seen on Kalgidhar Road, then after walking a short distance, he covered his face with a cloth and wandered around Imam Sahib’s house. After a while, he walked back into streets. The police were now trying to identify him. Mustkim said the suspect first went towards Police Division 2. Later, he was also seen near Police Division 3. He kept roaming in alleys to elude the police. He said on Tuesday, he, along with police officials, checked the CCTV footage of several areas. — TNS Were arrested while planning to commit loot in city Tribune News Service Ludhiana, October 8 The Ludhiana Police on Wednesday apprehended five persons involved in thefts and robberies in the city. They were arrested when they were planning to commit a loot in the city. The suspects have been identified as Tunna Kumar, alias Tunna, Rahul, Abhimanyu, Neeraj and Saurabh. The police recovered four motorcycles, a scooter and three sharp weapons from their possession. ADCP Vaibhav Sehgal, ACP Jasbir Singh, and Moti Nagar SHO inspector Bhupinder Singh said the police received information that the suspects, who were habitual offenders of robbery, theft, were planning a dacoity while sitting in the GLADA ground. Residents of the region appreciated his songs which highlighted cultural heritage of the state and social bonding among families. Dheean, Khush Reha Kar, Jamme Nall Dey, Sukh and Sakoon were among most loved songs of Rajvir while his three films ‘Kaka Ji’, ‘Subedar Joginder Singh’ and ‘Zind Jaan’ were also favorites among his fans. He refused to marry the girl, leaving the bride and her family in a state of shock. The bride’s family filed a police complaint against the groom and his family. The Ladhowal police after registering a case had launched a probe. The suspect is yet to be arrested. The victim told the police that in 2020, the suspect, Harpreet Singh, alias Bobby, had raped her in a vacant plot in front of the Hambran Fish Market. Afterwards, he held discussions with her about marriage for a long time but he refused to marry her. Later, after a lengthy discussion, he finally agreed to marry the girl. The victim said her marriage was fixed with Harpreet for October 7. Harpreet did not arrive with the wedding procession on the day of marriage. She made several phone calls but when he failed to respond, the police were informed. The Ladhowal police on Tuesday registered a case against Harpreet and his father Jaspal Singh under the POCSO Act. After the registration of the case, the suspect was on the run.
