Officials stated that the case came to light when the Jalandhar Rural Police registered an FIR under the NDPS Act and began probing financial transactions linked to the accused. The investigation confirmed that Goraya had acquired property worth Rs 50,33,750 from profits generated through drug smuggling. Following the financial probe, the ED initiated proceedings under the NDPS Act and ordered the attachment of the illegally acquired property. The case, registered as FIR No. 6 dated April 6, 2022, at Goraya Police Station, had already led to multiple arrests and the seizure of narcotic substances. The competent authority in New Delhi later reviewed the evidence and confirmed the attachment order, making the property seizure legally binding. Police officials emphasised that this action demonstrates the government’s continued commitment to dismantling the financial networks that sustain the narcotics trade. PU regional campus remains calm despite tempest Sanjiv Kumar Bakshi Hoshiarpur, November 13 While the Panjab University campus in Chandigarh is witnessing heated protests and political tension over the Senate elections and the Centre's proposed restructuring of the university's governing bodies, the scene at its regional campus in Hoshiarpur presents a completely different picture. The Swami Sarvanand Giri Regional Campus (PUSSGRC) remains peaceful and unaffected. At the Hoshiarpur campus, classes are continuing as usual, with no protest, no sloganeering and no disruption to academic activities. Students An outside view of the Swami Sarvanand Giri Regional Campus in Hoshiarpur. A TRIBUNE PHOTOGRAPH appear largely uninterested in the controversy that has taken centre-stage at the main campus. One major reason for this calm is the absence of student politics in Punjab. Student elections were banned in the Singer Hassan Manak in 14-day judicial remand in fraud case Ashok Kaura Phagwara, November 13 A local court on Thursday sent Punjabi singer Hassan Manak alias Hassan Khan to judicial remand of 14 days in connection with a case involving allegations of cheating, fraud and sexual assault lodged by a UKbased NRI woman. The accused was produced before the Judicial Magistrate, Phagwara, who ordered his remand following preliminary interrogation by police officials. According to police sources, the remand follows a detailed complaint filed earlier this year by Parvinder Kaur, mother of the victim Jaspreet Kaur, a Non-Resident Indian residing in the United Kingdom. The complaint, addressed to the Superintendent of Police, Phagwara, seeks registration of an FIR against Hassan Manak and several of his family members. The complainant alleged that the accused befriended her daughter on Instagram during his visit to England, proposed marriage, and concealed his marital status and religious identity. The accused allegedly misrepresented himself as a single Sikh while being married to Mandeep Kaur, with a pending domestic violence case in Bathinda courts. The complaint further claimed that under the false pretext of marriage, Manak and his family extracted Rs 22-25 lakh from the victim's family in the form of wedding-related expense. The victim later alleged that the accused compelled her to leave India immediately, warning that police might arrest her. She departed for London from Amritsar Airport, accompanied by the accused and his brother, during which £1,800 was reportedly stolen from her purse. The victim, identified as 35year-old Manpreet Kaur, a resident of Aujla Road, was rushed to the Civil Hospital with the help of a PCR team. Her condition is said to be stable. According to police, the incident occurred around 5.30 pm when Manpreet Kaur was returning home from work. As she passed a short distance ahead of MLA Rana’s house, three men on a bullet motorcycle approached her and fired shots. A bullet pierced through her thigh before the assailants fled the scene. On receiving information, PCR in-charge Charanjit Singh and his team reached the spot and shifted the injured woman to the hospital. DSP (Sub-Division) Sheetal Singh, who also arrived at the site, confirmed that the victim had sustained a gunshot wound to her thigh and that her condition was stable. Preliminary investigation revealed that the woman had been living separately from her husband for several years and had an ongoing dispute with a man named Suraj Thapar. In her statement to the police, Manpreet alleged that it was Suraj Thapar, a resident of Daburji village, who fired at her. — OC mal. As a result, student organisations that are active in Chandigarh have little or no presence at Hoshiarpur. The Congress-backed National Students Union of India (NSUI) does not have a unit here. Similarly, the Students Federation of India (SFI), supported by left-leaning groups, the Student Organisation of India (SOI), backed by the Shiromani Akali Dal, and the communist groups - All India Students Federation (AISF) and All India Students Association (AISA) - also have no presence on this campus. Even though the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) is in power in Punjab, its student wing, the Association of Students for Alternative Politics (ASAP), is completely unknown among students at PUSSGRC. "We have never even heard of such a group," said a few students when asked. The only active student organisation on the campus is the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), affiliated to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). However, its local leaders too have chosen to remain uninvolved in the current issue. Tarun Bhardwaj, president of the ABVP unit at PUSSGRC, said, "The students here have nothing to do with the Senate or Syndicate elections. Since student elections are banned in Punjab, our focus remains on academics, not politics." When asked whether the Senate and Syndicate decisions could affect students, teachers and affiliated colleges across the state, Bhardwaj replied, "We are with the government. When the government is funding and managing the university, it naturally has the right to take decisions regarding its affairs." While protests and heated debates continue to grip the Panjab University campus at Chandigarh, the Hoshiarpur regional campus continues to function in its usual academic rhythm - calm and detached from the political storm raging elsewhere.
