Fingers crossed, the process will finally move forward tomorrow. Even as residents await the promised facelift of the city’s iconic “green lung”, questions over cost, accountability and transparency continue to cloud the project. The estimated cost of the project has been slashed three times, from an initial Rs 8.8 crore to Rs 8.4 crore and recently to Rs 7.8 crore. Senior Deputy Mayor Rakesh Prashar has raised objections to the Rs 7.81 crore estimate, calling it “excessive” and urging that the garden’s maintenance be entrusted to local firms PHOTO: ASHWANI DHIMAN Tribune News Service DISPROPORTIONATE SPENDING, BRIBERY SCANDAL CLOUD INITIATIVE The Rose Garden revamp, funded under the Smart City Mission, began as an Rs 8.8 crore plan but has since been scaled down twice to Rs 8.4 crore and now Rs 7.8 crore. Yet progress remains elusive. The first tender, amounting to Rs 8.8 crore for the project, was under Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). “Several companies are Suspicious car spotted near AAP MLA’s house Nikhil Bhardwaj Tribune News Service Ludhiana, February 15 A suspicious vehicle was caught roaming outside the house of AAP MLA Kulwant Sidhu. The Atam Nagar MLA suspects that, since he has already been receiving threats from international numbers suspected to be linked with Sikhs for Justice (SFJ) terrorist Gurpatwant Pannun, suspicious persons could be roaming near his house to target him. On Saturday night, a recce was also conducted outside Sidhu’s house. During this, a car with tinted glass was captured on the CCTV cameras. The MLA was holding a meeting at the time. When the people in the car noticed the presence of people there, they waited. When the gunman tried to stop them, they fled. The MLA said, “A meeting was going on at around 9 pm on Saturday night. Then a car with blacked- out windows stopped outside the house. The car remained there for about two minutes, appearing to be assessing the house. By the time my gunman tried to stop them and came inside to inform me, they had driven away.” Speaking candidly about threats and suspicious activities, MLA Sidhu said, “I am not afraid of any threats. I have the blessings of Baba Deep Singh. As long as he is there, no one can harm me. We were elected to serve the people and we will not back down.” Sources said that calls from international numbers have been coming for the past week. In the past, SFJ’s Pannun had also issued a life threat to the MLA. As the matter reached the police, they are now scanning the footage of CCTV cameras installed in Kulwant Sidhu’s locality to trace the number of the suspicious car and the accused. opened in 2024 but scrapped following a clash with the Model Code of Conduct for the elections. Engaging them here would save municipal funds and allow resources to be redi- rected to ward-level development,” he said. “Earlier Rs 3.29 crore was earmarked in the tender for horticulture, which has now been reduced to Rs 2.5 crore, but the amount is still too large and needs stronger accountability mechanisms,” said Prashar. With the March 31 deadline for Smart City funds looming, civic activists warn that further delays could jeopardise the project altogether. “I have been hearing for a long time about the beautification of the Rose Garden, but it has not started this year. For now, the Rose Garden stands as a symbol of how red tape and mistrust can choke even the most beautiful of dreams. The city waits, hopeful yet weary, for the day when the fragrance of roses replaces the scent of delay,” adds city resident Arjun Mishra.
