District mandi officials said the government has constituted 11 sub-yards and 38 grain markets in the district for the procurement of wheat crop. However, during the first two days of procurement, none of the sub-yards or the grain markets has witnessed arrival of wheat produce from the agricultural fields. The officials said given the fact that the wheat crop has not fully ripened and has more moisture content, the arrival of crop can only be expected after April 2. Chief agriculture officer Jatinder Singh Gill said: “Most likely the harvesting of wheat fields is expected to pick up pace after Baisakhi celebrations on April 14.” He said crop has been cultivated on nearly 1.88 lakh hectares in the district. The total wheat yield in the district is expected to touch 9.40 lakh MT. The officials said wheat procurement would be done by four state agencies and the FCI. SUNIL KUMAR Govt revokes order on pvt silos amid protest threat Tribune News Service Amritsar, April 2 The state government has revoked its orders declaring private silos as open yards after farm unions threatened to launch protest. Satnam Singh Ajnala of Jamhoori Kisan Sabha said the Central and state governments were trying to hand over reins of agriculture markets to the corporate houses. He said the recent decision of the state government was in line with its policies to pro- mote corporatisation of the agriculture sector. Farmer unions were to hold protest on April 8. Ajnala said the government has revoked its earlier order under pressure from the farmer unions. Besides, he said the farmers were demanding that procurement of all crops should be made by the government so that both farmers and consumers could benefit, but instead the government was trying to give free hand to corporate houses. Powercom unions to oppose AAP in Lok Sabha polls Tarn Taran, April 2 PSEB Employees Joint Forum and Bijli Mulazam Ekta Manch organised a circle-level convention at Ramgarhia Bunga to discuss their demands and the state government’s attitude towards their demands. Union leaders said they must oppose AAP candidates in the ensuing Lok Sabha election by holding rallies, demonstrations and marches during the period. The leaders also condemned the state government’s indifferent attitude toward their demands. The leaders said the state government’s performance during the past two years was totally condemnable. They said the chief minister has no time to meet employees union leaders. — OC Forum holds dialogue on ways to invite US investment in Amritsar Tribune News Service Amritsar, April 2 The first edition of US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) here today discussed ways to bolster the US-Amritsar ties and invite investments for the district. USISPF is associated with 400 companies out of the top 500 companies in the world, and many of these firms are investing in India. The event was organised in collaboration with the FICCI. Addressing the inaugural session, USISPF president and CEO Mukesh Aghi said a lot of US-based companies were willing to invest in Amritsar. Aghi said former diplomat Ex-diplomat Taranjit Singh Sandhu addresses the first US-India Strategic Partnership Forum in Amritsar on Tuesday. MC demolishes 4 buildings for violations Tribune News Service Amritsar, April 2 The Municipal Corporation today partially demolished four buildings constructed in violation of norms in the walled city area. On MC Commissioner Harpreet Singh’s directive, the MTP department took c m y b action against four underconstruction buildings at Bagh Ramanand area. Central Zone Assistant Town Planner Paramjeet Dutta, Building Inspector Navjot Kaur, Building Inspector Nirmaljeet Verma and field staff visited Bagh Ramanand and Lakkar Mandi and demolished commercial buildings being constructed without approved building plan. Dutta said continuous action will be taken against the illegally constructed buildings and no violator would be exempted. Sandhu, also BJP candidate from Amritsar Lok Sabha, said the private sector would be strengthened in Amritsar. “We will work together. Your dreams will surely come true,” he motivated the participants. Besides, Sandhu promised increased air connectivity, opening of US consulate, opportunities for international trade for Amritsar.
