Teams from the district administration conducted a door-to-door campaign to reach out to all transgender voters and exhorted them to exercise their voting rights in the coming elections. She said that as per instructions received from the Election Commission, every section of society is being encouraged to participate in the coming Lok Sabha elections. From Cong to AAP, Dhaliwal may not find win a cakewalk LOK SABHA POLL Manmeet Singh Gill Tribune News Service Amritsar, April 4 The Aam Aadmi Party candidate from Amritsar Lok Sabha constituency, Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal, who is also a cabinet minister, would have to answer some serious questions in this elections as most of his party chief Arvind Kejriwal’s guarantees like drug-free Punjab, resolution of farmers’ issues and Rs 1,000 per month for all women over 18 years of age remain unfulfilled. Also, there seems to be no perceptible undercurrent unlike in the 2022 state assembly elections. Though AAP has already delivered on the promise of Rs 300 units of free electricity per household to the people, its promise regarding 24 hours of uninterrupted power supply seems to have been forgotten. The government has also opened only 829 Mohalla Clinics in Punjab AAP LS candidate Kuldeep Dhaliwal addresses an election meeting in Amritsar. FILE PHOTO against Kejriwal’s promise of 16,000 such clinics. For a seasoned politician like Dhaliwal who started his career from Punjab Students Union, an ultra-left students organization, and later joined the Congress during Chief Minister Beant Singh’s government, it should not be much of a problem to evade such questions. Dhaliwal had moved abroad in the 1990s and was appointed president of the Congress Intellectual Cell when he returned three decades later. He, however joined AAP in January 2016. The NRI Affairs Minister had also tried his luck in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections but got only 20,087 votes. In 2022, he became an MLA from Ajnala constituency. After government formation, he was given important portfolios such as panchayat and rural development, agriculture and NRI affairs. However, in May 2023, he was stripped off his more important portfolios and is presently the NRI Affairs Minister. Political observers feel that Dhaliwal is presently devoting more time to campaigning in his assembly segment Ajnala instead of the eight other segments. “Having already lost favour with the AAP leaders, it is more important that he wins from his assembly constituency even if he loses the Lok Sabha election. Losing in Ajnala segment would also threaten his candidature in the next assembly elections,” said a senior journalist. Private hospital doctor held in Nishan-e-Sikhi student secures 19 cellphones seized 3-year-old fraud, forgery case 7th rank in NDA entrance exam from Asr Central Jail Tribune News Service Amritsar, April 4 Ranjit Avenue police have arrested Dr Parveen Devgan of a private hospital located in the posh Ranjit Avenue area here on Thursday in connection with a three-year-old case of cheating and forgery. He was produced in a court, which remanded him in judicial custody. Dr Devgan was booked following a complaint filed by Gokul Chand Aneja, a resident of the Airport road area, after his wife Sunita Aneja, a lawyer, died due to his alleged post-operative negligence in October 2018. Besides lodging a police complaint, he had also submitted a complaint with the Health Department for a highlevel probe while accusing Dr Devgan and his staff of gross negligence during the postoperative treatment that led to his wife’s untimely death. The narrow streets in the walled city are always a major challenge for the firefighters. Most of the buildings in the city do not have any clearance from the Fire Department and are ill-equipped to control a fire. Moreover, even water hoses have not been provided in the interior parts of the city. The firefighters have to arrange water from sarovars of gurdwaras or arrange 1,000-ft-long hose pipes to douse fire. A large number of illegal commercial buildings have been constructed in the past few years. Most builders not only violate the building bylaws but also fire safety rules. The inquiry report of the Chief Vigilance Office Firemen try to douse flames at a furniture store in Amritsar. FILE PHOTO (CVO) of the Local Bodies Department has revealed that multi-storey hotels along the three-foot wide street are flouting the fire safety rules. Fire Department personnel face several challenges while responding to a fire call in the walled city. Most of the time, drivers of fire tenders find it difficult to enter the narrow lanes. During the past few years, the MC got some equipment to douse a fire in highrise buildings. Now, the Fire Department has 15 fire tenders, four jeeps equipped with fire machines and five motorcycles for narrow streets. The Amritsar Municipal Corporation purchased ultra-modern equipment from the US, Japan and Italy under the Smart City project. Now the MC has victim locator camera, breathing apparatus sets, air compressor, piercing nozzle and handheld nozzle apparatus. The victim locator camera is used to search people buried under the debris after a structure or building collapses. Breathing apparatus sets and breathing air compressor are useful to fill empty cylinders on the field. Piercing nozzle is used to drill a hole in a wall. The handheld nozzle apparatus helps in controlling fire. The continued on page 2 c m y b said that Sehajpreet had brought laurels to the institute and done his parents proud.
