The victim Rajia told the police that she was at her shop when a motorcycle-borne youth demanded a packet of cigarettes and biscuits. As soon as she handed over these items, the suspect suddenly snatched her earrings and managed to flee. The police registered a case under Section 379B of the IPC. OC MAN BOOKED FOR INSULT TO RELIGION Phagwara: The Nakodar Sadar police have booked a villager on the charge of destroying, damaging or defiling a place of worship or sacred object with the intent to insult a religion of any class of persons. Investigating Officer (IO) Kulwinder Singh said the suspect was identified as Ramandeep Singh, a resident of Ranghrra village. Chuharr Singh, a resident of the same village, complained to the police that the suspect barged into his house on March 27, assaulted him, removed his turban and threatened him with dire consequences. The IO said a case was registered against the suspect and raids were on to nab him. Joint Municipal Commissioner Kulpreet Singh said efforts were on to contact Chandigarh headquarters to update the app so that people could deposit their tax online. Notably, the NGT had sought a reply from the Corporation on the Chugitti waste dump issue and plans to tackle solid waste management in the city. Staff members said due to non-payment of salaries, many teachers were facing economic hardships. They also demanded clearance of pending dues of Prof Gurjit Singh who died in December last year. Tejinder Virli, state committee member, Punjab Chandigarh College Teachers Union, said, “We have made repeated requests to the management, but our pleas have gone unheard. As long as staff isn’t paid salary for the six months, no function of any kind will be allowed on the college premises. If the Principal still persists on holding an event, then uncovered staff will hold a sitin at the college on that day.” Teachers appealed to the college management to clear at least six months pending dues to alleviate their economic suffering. Dr Anoop Watts, Principal, KRM DAV College, Nakodar, said, “It is correct that salaries of uncovered staff have been pending. These are, however, are being cleared. The decline in student strength of the college and the resultant fund crunch has had an adverse impact on functioning of the college. The issue has also been repeatedly flagged with the management. Besides, the PF dues of Prof Gurjit Singh have already been paid. His other dues will also be cleared on priority basis. The matter is also sub judice.” The Principal said, “As far as holding functions is concerned, no college funds are used for the purpose. Recently, an event was organised from outside donations. The college funds have not been touched. The salary of teachers will be cleared by the management as and when possible.” Notably, a decade ago, KRM DAV College, had a strength of 1,700 to 2,000 students, which declined to 500 to 550 after the onset of the Covid pandemic. At present, the college has a strength of 300 to 340 students. Rajput went live on the FB to announce that she had given up her responsibility as she felt that the opinion sought from party leaders was not being valued. The city has plunged into darkness as over 4,000 complaints regarding non-functional streetlights are pending with the municipal corporation (MC). When political leaders start campaigning and ask for votes while making big promises, they fail to ensure even basic amenities like streetlights for the city people. Ironically, state’s Local Bodies Minister Balkar Singh is from Jalandhar. There have been many accidents and crime rate has also gone up in the areas of city where streetlights are lying defunct. Political leaders and the general public have been lodging complaints in this connection with the authorities concerned. The MC had recently issued a notice to a company for failing to operate and maintain 71,000 LED smart streetlights in the city and sought an answer in this connection Non-functional streetlights at Damoria Flyover in Jalandhar. Nurmahal civic body fails to provide disabled-friendly facilities in govt offices Phagwara, April 4 The Nurmahal Nagar Council (NC) has failed to implement directions of the Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities and Department of Social Security And Women and Child Development, Punjab Government, regarding implementation of the provisions of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act. The Director, Local Government, was instructed to implement provisions of Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act by the two authorities concerned. Asha Rani, a resident of Mohalla Shah Karni, Nurmahal, had complained to the commissioner that the office of the NC executive officer was situated on the second floor and was inaccessible to physically challenged persons. She said Sections 44 to 46 of the Persons with Disabilities (Equal Opportunities, Protection of Rights and Full Participa- tion) Act ensures a barrier-free environment for persons with disabilities. She said the Act mandates special provisions for integrating persons with disabilities into social mainstream. As per provisions of the Act the municipal authorities/corporations should provide stepless system for easy access through lifts to upper floors of buildings, adequate door width for wheelchair entry, and accessible toilets before permitting construction. — OC
