She checked record of Anganwadi workers, distribution of supplementary nutrition, mid-day meal food quality and ration while overseeing preparation of meals by cooks in various schools. She said quality inspection of mid-day meals was mandatory every month. Any lapses in food quality would not be tolerated. Several persons were injured in the incident. A monetary dispute between the immigration agency and their client was cited as the reason behind the quarrel that led to firing. The incident has raised questions over the city’s law and order situation even as the model code of conduct is in force in view of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Two of carjackers gang nabbed, two vehicles recovered Amritsar, April 24 The police have cracked a carjacking case and arrested two persons in this connection. A car was snatched from a Ludhiana-based taxi driver from the Golden Avenue area on the intervening night of Thursday and Friday. Those arrested were identified as Sahildeep Singh, alias Vishal (19), and Vishal, alias Vishu (20), both residents of the Harike Pattan area in Tarn Taran district. The DCP said the Aura car (bearing registration No. PB-01-D-2527) was recovered from Ropar. He further said a Mahindra Thar SUV (bearing registration No. PB80-0805) used in the crime was recovered from Vishal. The DCP said all suspects had criminal record. — TNS Tarn Taran, April 24 A drug peddler was arrested with 3.166 kg of heroin on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday near Dall village while his two associates managed to escape under the cover of darkness. A drone was also seized from the spot by the police. Adressing the media today, SSP Ashwani Kapur said the Khalra police led by Inspector Vinod Sharma, SHO, was on patrol duty in the area when they noticed three persons with a packet and a drone. On seeing the police, two of the three suspects managed to escape, leaving behind the drone and the packet. The third person was arrested with the packed that contained heroin and drone. The arrested suspect was identified as Harjit Singh of Rokhe village in Ajnala. He had hired a taxi from Chandigarh for Amritsar. After reaching Amritsar, Harjit, along with his two accomplices, kidnapped and thrashed the car driver and demanded an amount of Rs 3 lakh in cash from him. The police said raids were on to nab his two accomplices. Besides Harjit Singh, the police booked Rajbir Singh of Lakhwal village in Ajnala and Lucky Sharma of Moli Sagra near the Chandigarh railway station. A case under Sections 365, 384, 323 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code was registered against the three suspects in this connection. The incident occurred between April 17 and April 20 and came to light when the victim managed to escape from the custody of the suspects after dodging them. Complainant Ramroop Mishra of Chandigarh told the police that the suspects hired a taxi from Chandigarh to Amritsar. After reaching Amritsar, they kidnapped him and took him to an unknown location. They demanded Rs 3 lakh extortion from him. However, the victim said he gave the suspects Rs 80,000 while the latter demanded the remaining amount. The victim said he was kept in a hotel room near the Golden Temple from where he managed to escape. Investigating officer ASI Baldev Singh said after escaping from the hotel room, the victim went to his relative’s house in Amritsar. He was so frightened after the incident that he did not complain to the police, the ASI said. Later, the victim lodged a police complaint following which one of the suspects Harjit Singh was arrested after specific input. Liquorrecovered fromcar Tarn Taran, April 24 The Chohla Sahib police recovered 2,96,250 ML of illicit liquor from a car on Tuesday. On seeing the police party, the car driver escaped from the spot. Ravisher Singh, DSP , Goindwal Sahib, said the car was impounded by a police party led by ASI Gurmej Singh. The car was going from Kambo Dhaewala village in the mand area towards Marhana village. The DSP said the car driver would be identified and arrested soon. In the second incident, the Patti Sadar police recovered 15,000 ML of illicit liquor from Mangal Singh of Sabhra village on Tuesday. Mangal was arrested on the spot. In the third incident the police seized 6,750 ML of illicit liquor from the house of Pargat Singh, a resident of Bhikhiwind village. He was arrested on the spot by the police. Cases under Sections 61, 1 and 14 of the Excise Act were registered against the three suspects at the respective police stations. The police said illicit liquor distilled in the mand area along the Beas river was being sold in the nearby villages. — OC Lifting picks up as wheat arrival crosses 1 lakh MT mark in mandis across district Tribune News Service Amritsar, April 24 The efforts of the administration to expedite the lifting of wheat from grain markets in the district has started yielding results as procurement agencies have increased fer- rying of the procured crop stocks to warehouses. After a meeting to review the progress of the procurement process, Deputy Commissioner Ghanshyam Thori said all agencies had lifted more wheat stocks from dana mandis during the last 72 hours than that of the crop purchased in the corresponding period. He said all agencies on an average lifted 177 per cent of grains procured in the last three days. He said the state government agency topped in lifting of the wheat stock. He said the agency lifted 290 per cent of the wheat stocks it had purchased in the last three days. Similarly, other agencies such as Pungrain lifted 176 per cent, Markfed 174 per cent and Punjab State Warehousing Corporation 112 per c m y b cent of the wheat stocks procured in the last 72 hours. Thori said procurement agencies had been instructed to lift all of their procured stocks so that more space was available for the fresh produce arriving at mandis from fields. During a visit to the Majitha grain market, Thori held a meeting with officials, commission agents and farmers and listened to grievances. Thori also instructed officials to resolve issues being faced by farmers, workers and arhtias at grain markets. Meanwhile, with arrival of 38,168 metric tonnes (MT) of wheat on Tuesday, the total crop arrival crossed 1 lakh MT mark in the district. Mandi officials said 1.07 Lakh MT wheat crop had arrived in grain markets so far. Of the total crop that had come to the mandis in the district, nearly 84 per cent (90,934 MT) had already been procured by agencies. The four government agencies procured a total of 82,236 MT while private traders purchased 8,698 MT of wheat till date.
