OC Once foes, Chaudhary, Rinku share stage INDIA VOTES 2024 Deepkamal Kaur Tribune News Service Jalandhar, May 4 Politics is a full circle and leaders must give their statement and take stands exercising utmost caution or else they tend to erode their own credibility. An unsavoury situation has emerged in the Jalandhar political circle in the ongoing Lok Sabha elections in which all leaders are learning this lesson a hard way. Within a year, there has been so much upheaval that political foes have turned friends. Politically well-connected friends have turned arch-rivals. This make voters completely confused on what was going around to the extent that they are getting a feeling of having been taken for a ride. In April 2023, Phillaur Congress MLA Vikramjit Chaudhary and MP Sushil Rinku could not see eye to eye. Chaudhary had a feeling that Rinku had ditched him right at the time when his family was completely shattered owing to his father and then MP Chaudhary Santokh Singh’s sudden demise. Chaudhary’s mother Karamjeet Kaur Chaudhary had got BJP leader Karamjeet Chaudhary, along with BJP candidate Sushil Rinku and party leaders, addresses a press conference in Jalandhar on Saturday. TRIBUNE PHOTO: MALKIAT SINGH ‘CONGRESS METED OUT INJUSTICE TO KARAMJEET’ “The Congress has meted out injustice to Karamjeet Kaur Chaudhary. The party has not valued the contribution of her family. Instead of her, outsider Charanjit S Channi has been fielded from Jalandhar by the Congress. She has been cheated and her due right has been snatched. There are some principles while fighting a battle which Channi seems to have given up. He should not have fallen to such a low level,” the note written in Punjabi implies. the ticket for 2023 Jalandhar Lok Sabha bypoll out of sympathy. The Congress campaign had just started when Rinku left the party and joined the Aam Aadmi Party to be picked as its candidate. Vikramjit had repeatedly suggested that Rinku’s poster terming him a traitor SAD president Sukhbir Badal holds a roadshow in favour of party candidate from Anandpur Sahib Prem Singh Chandumajra at the Banga-Nawanshahr highway on Saturday. MALKIAT SINGH should be put up in the Congress Bhawan. In the present general election, things have changed to the extent that Rinku is the BJP candidate from Jalandhar and Karamjeet too has joined the saffron party. Both are in the same platform again and Karamjeet will have to campaign for Rinku, whom the family had been considering a traitor till a month ago. Today, both sat next to each other at a media interaction in Jalandhar. The uneasiness showed a bit as Karamjeet did not take Rinku’s name even once in her 40-45 minute interaction. She applauded PM Narendra Modi and the Central leadership, but she did not ask for vote in Rinku’s name. Now that it is Rinku’s need being the LS candidate, he went back and got today’s pictures posted on his social media pages. He used a sympathetic tone for her. “The Congress has meted out injustice to Karamjeet Kaur Chaudhary. “Was Rinku morally correct a year ago or is he doing the right thing now? How can Rinku, who ditched Chaudhary when their wounds were so fresh, all of a sudden become their well-wisher and start feeling their pain? Has Chaudhary family forgotten the wounds that actually Rinku gave her by defeating her?” These are the questions going around in the minds of all political observers in Jalandhar. Well as they say, everything is fair in love, war and politics! There are no permanent friends and enemies in this dirty game. TRIBUNE PHOTOS Tribune News Service Jalandhar, May 4 Residents and commuters near the Gazigulla railway crossing are facing inconvenience due to blocked sewer line. Despite repeated requests to the authorities concerned, including the zonal commis- sioner, commissioner and Sewerage Department officials, nothing has been done to resolve the problem. Suraj Birdi, a resident, said stagnant sewer water on the road raises a stink and poses serious health hazard to residents. He urged the authorities concerned to take effective measures to address the problem. He said commuters had to face a lot of difficulties. Residents threatened that they would boycott the political parties in the forthcoming elections if the problem persists. “The problem resurfaces whenever it rains, leaving sewer lines blocked and water accumulated on roads for days, forcing children and students to navigate through dirty water,” the residents said. “Foul smell emanating from the stagnant water has become unbearable,” they said. Krishan Sharma, another resident, said despite bringing the issue to the notice of the authorities, nothing concrete had been done. “Candidates make lofty promises of development and providing top-notch facilities to residents during elections. Around a year after the issuance of a circular asking all vendors selling eatables at railway stations to provide Janata Khana the Ferozepur division ensured that they sold economy meals. A packet of Rs 15 Janata Khana has 175 grams of puri Each packet costs ~15, contains 7 puris, vegetable & pickle (seven puris), 150 grams of vegetable (Alloo di sabji) and pickle. Another option is available at Rs 20 in which a 300 ml water bottle is included with ready to eat Janata Khana. Apart from this, arrangements for cooking economy meals have been made at the designated units of the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation. Railway officials said Janata Khana was available for passengers at Jammu Tawi, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Pathankot, Jalandhar City, Jalandhar Cantt, Shaheed Captain Tushar Mahajan in Udhampur, and Ferozepur Cantt railway stations. Apart from food, passengers can also buy other eatables from vends at the railway stations. Vendors said selling food at meagre amount of Rs 15 was not economically viable as cooking cost was high. They recalled when Union Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee had launched Janata Khana at Rs 10 per packet while presenting the 2009-10 Railway Budget. After a gap of around 14 years, the Railway authorities re-launched Janata Khana with only Rs five per packet hike. They pleaded that the price hike was insufficient as cooking on LPG-run stoves was already prohibited at the railway station. In such a situation, they had to arrange puris and vegetable from outside, which increased their input costs. They sought a reasonable hike in the cost per packet to successfully run the scheme.
