CHANDIGARH | TUESDAY | 7 MAY 2024 NET, FLICKS & MORE Season 2 of The Broken News maintains its momentum as it calls out much that is wrong in our system — politics, journalism and corporate world EMILY BLUNT All about chemistry Actress Emily Blunt has talked about how she felt sick after kissing certain co-stars, despite having a chemistry with them! “I’ve had chemistry with people I haven’t liked,” Blunt said during an appearance on The Howard Stern Show. When asked, “Who?” she simply replied. “I’m not gonna tell you. I have had chemistry with people who... I have not had a good time working with them,” she said. “Sometimes it’s a strange thing. Sometimes you could have a rapport that’s really effortless, but it doesn’t translate on screen,” she said. “Chemistry is this strange thing. It’s an ethereal thing that you can’t really bottle up, and buy or sell. It’s like there or it’s not. It’s just easier when you have a natural rapport with someone,” she added. Blunt also spoke about some methods she used to find chemistry with a co-star when there wasn’t any. “I’ve got to find something I love about everybody. I have to find something... Even if it’s one thing,” she said. “It might be that they have a nice laugh, or I like how they speak to people. They’re polite. I mean, it might be something random. But find something you love about that person or something you love about them as a character, and then kind of lean into that.” Blunt shared that some moments on the sets have been downright ‘gross’. When discussing onscreen kisses with a co-actor, the host asked, “Have you wanted to throw up?” To which she responded, “Absolutely. Absolutely.” “I wouldn’t say it’s sort of extreme loathing, but I’ve definitely not enjoyed some of it,” added the actress, who has collaborated with figures such as Dwayne Johnson in Jungle Cruise, her husband John Krasinski in A Quiet Place, and Cillian Murphy in Oppenheimer. — IANS It’s Ahlawat, all the way Web series: THE BROKEN NEWS SEASON 2 Cast: Jaideep Ahlawat Sonali Bendre, Shriya Pilgaonkar Director: Vinay Waikul Rating: ★★★ Nonika Singh Journalism ki chita jal rahi hai usi ka dhuan hai… sounds like a hyperbole. Think again. Television journalism is fast plumbing to deplorable depths and touching a nadir. And we all are witness to its decline and death of ethical journalism. Kahani ko sach bana kar, as against sach ko kahani ki tarah pesh karna has become the USP of this medium. As The Broken News returns for the second season, it once again takes us into the world where in a bid to break news, much of value is broken. Taking off from the first season, the feud between two rival channels, Awaz Bharati and Josh24X7, is very much alive and raring to go. The series opens with murder of brave journalist Radha Bhargav (Sriya). Hereafter, we move back in time when Radha has been branded anti-national and jailed. The man behind her infamy is but obviously editor-in-chief Dipankar Sanyal of rival channel Josh 24 x 7. His unethical behaviour is in direct proportion to his ambition to own the channel. Jaideep Ahlawat reprising Dipankar Sanyal once again proves what a phenomenal actor he is. Though supposedly his character is fashioned after the hyperventilating news anchor whose name we need not utter. Since you all know this deshbhakt! However, trust Jaideep to not ape or follow anyone but to create his own reference point and flesh out a livingbreathing journalist on his own terms. The beauty of his characterisation lies in how he creates this conniving person with- out caricaturisation. His intentions are not always noble, but never unconvincing. Be it when he lands up in jail asking Radha to sign the apology letter or when he lashes out at his junior, after she bungles up or tells his estranged wife how he can’t give up, he is very much the nuanced actor. He says it all with a gesture here, an expression there. A smile, a scowl and even fluttering of eyes become tools in the hands of this fine actor. Radha his bête noire is played by Shriya Pilgaonkar with equal force. Consumed by revenge, once out of jail, she takes him on and the powers that he serves. Her belligerent self might seem a bit too capricious for her own good. Her boss and editor-inchief Ameena Qureshi (Sonali Bendre) remains the voice of sanity and reason. Sonali gets the equanimity of her part; looks and acts like the true representative of unbi- Three cheers! Though the series calls out much that is wrong in our system — politics, journalism and corporate world — it also does a fine balancing act. As the action moves from one television studio to another, you may wonder why most of the drama is confined to studios and anchors. But opinions and counter opinions, sadly, is what television journalism has been reduced to. It reminds us truth is out there in the field, when both editors step out to follow their individual stories on ground. The editing by cuts and intercuts, juxtaposing the happenings in rival studios with felicity, heightens the engagement quotient. Even otherwise, with right degree of twists and turns, The Broken News maintains momentum and interest does not flag. The writing has a freshness and spark. Inspired by real-life inci- dents, you can co-relate much of what is going on in the eightepisode series with what you are seeing around you. Power of trolls, electoral bonds, celebrities’ influence and, of course, can any series be complete without a murder or two. It’s here that writers bring in some thrilling elements. One odd twist may not be palatable for why would a daughter come forward and reveal her father’s sins. Then, the moment Ronni (Akshay Oberoi) enters the scene as an employee of a foreign tech giant, you know where his presence is going to lead. The big reveal that does not concern him is surprising, redeeming journalism and journalists. Coming during election time, the cautionary note — don’t treat political figures as demigods — is timely. As is the Faiz Ahmed Faiz anthem Bol Ke Lab Azad Hai, which plays at the end of episodes. Drake’s latest salvo, The Heart Part 6, serves as a direct response to Lamar’s accusations of sexual predation, which have dominated recent releases. In Lamar’s track Meet the Grahams, released on May 3, he directly accuses Drake of harbouring sex offenders at his label OVO and insinuates Drake’s alleged interest in younger women. The feud took a darker turn when Lamar suggested that Drake’s residence, dubbed The Embassy, could face legal scrutiny akin to recent raids on Sean ‘Diddy’ Diss is war Combs’ properties. Lamar doubled down on these accusations in his follow-up track, Not Like Us, where he explicitly labels Drake as a predator and called his team members paedophiles. The cover image of the track, a Google Maps image of Drake’s residence covered in predator map pins, adds visual weight to Lamar’s claims. In The Heart Part 6, Drake confronts these allegations head-on. He denies ever being involved with underage individuals, expressing disgust at Lamar’s insinuations and asserting his innocence. Drake also addresses Lamar’s alleged trauma, suggesting that his fixation on predator allegations stems from his own unresolved issues. Moreover, Drake references a past controversy involving actor Millie Bobby Brown, denying any inappropriate relationship and emphasising his preference for adult relationships. — ANI Whoopi Goldberg prefers being single because she ‘sparkles’ when not in love Being honest Renowned actress Whoopi Goldberg has said she ‘sparkles’ when she is not in love and cannot see herself ever getting into a relationship again. During the 1970s, the actress was married to Alvin Martin. Later, she was married to David Claessen in the late 1980s, and finally to Lyle Trachtenberg from 1994 until 1995. “I think other people seem to sparkle when they’re in love, and I like to see that. But for me, I sparkle when I’m not in love, which is kind of okay. And the older I get, the happier I am,” Goldberg said. The actress added: “So, just in case — and I’m directing this to folks who may want to write me on the Internet — here’s the deal. I know how cute I am, so you don’t have to tell me how I’m not attractive enough to have a boyfriend because, shockingly, I’ve had many.” Goldberg served as the host of The View for nearly 20 years. — IANS
