BJP Lok Sabha candidate from Amritsar Taranjit Sandhu and other leaders visited the family. On the occasion, BJP candidate Taranjit Singh Sandhu expressed heartfelt condolences to the family. The body was brought to Punjab due to the efforts of Sandhu for which the family thanked him. PHOTO: GURBAXPURI Our Correspondent Tarn Taran, May 7 With the issuing of notification for filing of nomination papers for the Lok Sabha elections, one candidate, Chain Singh, son of Shinda Singh, filed his papers from Khadoor Sahib constituency as the candidate of ‘Ass Punjab Party’ in the office of Sandeep Kumar, District Returning Officer-cum- Deputy Commissioner, Tarn Taran. According to officials, the last date for filing of nomination papers is May 14. The scrutiny of papers would be done on May 15 and nominations can be withdrawn on May 17. On May 10, because of Bhagwan Parshuram Jayanti, there will be a holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, but the candidate may file their papers. But May 11 and May 12 would be holidays on account of second Saturday and Sunday, and nomination papers cannot be filed on those days. The official said that polling would be held on June 1 from 7 am to 6 pm and counting would be held on June 4. The police have arrested three members of the gang and recovered 40 stolen mobile phones and gold ornaments from their possession. Those arrested have been identified as Kuldeep Singh, alias Deepu (20), a resident of Pandori village, Akashdeep Singh (23), alias Kashi, a resident of Sunder Nagar, Kapurthala, and at present residing at Varpal village, and Simran Singh, alias Simu (30), a resident of Sultanwind village. The police claimed that those arrested used to commit thefts in the “Kala Kacha Gang” style. The accused used to enter houses between 2.30 am and 3 am when people were asleep in their homes. They managed to enter their houses from the roof and carry out thefts. The police team was investigating a case registered on March 19 at the Sultanwaind Police station in which complainant Lakhwinder Singh, a resident of Bhai Manjh Singh Road, Tarn Taran Road, Amritsar, stated that on the intervening night of March 17 and 18, some unidentified person stole a mobile phone from his house. During the investigation, it came to light that the accused — Kuldeep Singh, alias Deepu, Simran Singh, alias Simu, Akashdeep Singh, alias Kashi, and his fiancée and another of their accomplices Gopi — used to burgle houses. Police officials claimed that these accused together target a house and around 2.30-3 am when people are asleep in their houses, they enter their house and steal valuables. The accused, Akashdeep Singh, alias Kashi, keep an eye around house while his accomplices enter inside. During interrogation, the accused confessed that they have been carrying out burglaries for the last two years and have stolen about 700 mobile phones and other items, besides cash and jewellery. Akashdeep Singh, alias Kashi, is already facing a case of theft at Kapurthala. Simran and Simu are facing four cases of theft and one of NDPS Act at the various police stations of the city. Tribune News Service Tribune News Service Amritsar, May 7 With the arrival of 22,345 metric tonnes of wheat, the total procurement so far this season touched the 6.25 lakh MT mark here on Tuesday. Officials of the district mandi stated that government agencies procured 22,565 MT while private traders purchased 1,325 MT on Tuesday. The four state government agencies and one Central Government agency have so far procured a total of 5.74 lakh MT. The private traders have only purchased 47,611 MT this season. With a total purchase of 6.22 lakh MT, only a negligible quantity of crop is left unsold so far. The mandi officials stated that as the moisture content in the grains at the time of arrival of the produce is within the permissible limit, it is being purchased on the same day. While addressing a public meeting at Ram Bali Chowk on the Batala road, Congress candidate Gurjeet Singh Aujla said he would work for the revival of traditional industry in the city which provided jobs to a large number of people. Aujla said the industry had migrated to other states due to poor policies of the state government and due to tax concessions being extended to such units in other states. Local residents and budding sports persons have staged protest expressing concern and demanding that the place be made garbage-free. The residents stated that the village has inherited the great legacy of Shaheed Sham Singh Attari but today it is completely ignored. Restaurant owner held for serving hookah Amritsar, May 7 The Crime Investigation Agency (CIA) nabbed the owner of a local restaurant here today. The arrested accused has been identified as Aman Chorasia, a resident of Bohar Wala Siwala, Gokal Vihar, Batala. The police recovered a hookah, hookah flavours and tobacco. Inspector Rajesh Sharma of the CIA staff stated that a team led by Sub-inspector Rajmahinder Singh was present during patrolling duty at Novelty Chowk, Lawrence Road, Amritsar. They received information that a local restaurant, Loveand-Bite 2.0 was serving hookah to its customers. On the basis of a tip-off, the police team raided the restaurant, nabbed the owner and seized hookah, hookah flavours and tobacco.
