Sweltering heat accompanied by loo did not upset the daily canvassing schedule of candidates who are up in the morning to meet their party leaders at home or visiting their houses to interact with them over breakfast. Many of them went straight to meet people after drawing a plan at their houses. Today morning, Aujla suddenly reached a wrestlers’ arena. Recalling his childhood days, he also tested his strength. Aujla spent some leisure time with the wrestlers at famous Bijli Pahalwan’s akhara located on Lawrence road. He rehearsed some moves with wrestlers. He said the youth of Punjab was currently in the grip of drugs but they could be wean away with the help of sports. AAP candidate Dhaliwal interacted with electorates of ward numbers 51, 56, 58, 59, 66, 73 and others of the central constituency along with its MLA Dr Ajay Gupta. He also held Nukkad meetings. Targeting the BJP he said , this Lok Sabha election was a battle to save the constitution of the country. Otherwise, the BJP would abolish the constitution. He flayed SAD and the Congress. Car driver booked for death of man 3 Independents file nominations Amritsar, May 8 Sadar Police station here has registered a case against an unidentified car driver for death of a daily wager in a road accident. In a complaint to the police, Rajesh Prajapati said his brother Muni Lal and cousin Devanand were returning home on May 6 when an over speeding car hit their bike near Fatehgarh Churrian flyover around 8.40 PM. He said his brother was driving the bike while Devanand was riding pillion. The accident left Devanand dead. Prajapati said due to darkness, he could not see the registration number of the vehicle. He said the driver of the car fled away after the accident. Sharanjit Kaur, 39, from Tung Bala has declared movable assets of Rs 2 lakh. A matriculate, Kaur has not declared any immovable assets and runs a boutique in the city. The second candidate Amanpreet Singh, 31, from Mahdipur village in Majitha. Amanpreet, a BSC (IT) graduate, has declared movable assets of Rs 15.22 lakh which include a car, a bike and 10 gm gold. Amanpreet has declared immovable assets worth Rs 61 lakh which include a house He said MP Gurjit Singh Aujla did not have any development done for the city to show to its residents. Similarly, SAD candidate Joshi held a number of meetings with electorates of different segments. In his interaction he tried to bring home the advantages of having a strong representation of a regional party at the Centre. Then a number of projects could be brought here. BJP’s Sandhu took part in two meetings at home at 8:30 am and 9 am. After holding a breakfast meeting at Moodal village at 9:30 am, he paid obeisance at Ber Sahib Gurdwara on the Mehta road at 11 am. VB arrests architect for accepting bribe Tribune News Service Amritsar, May 8 Vigilance Bureau (VB) arrested architect Sahil Bihari Sharma when he was accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000, an official said today. The official said the accused has been arrested on the basis of a complaint filed by Pirthipal Singh, a resident of Mirakot Chowk, Amritsar. The VB official said the complainant had approached them and alleged that the accused has demanded Rs 20,000 to help him in getting issued a no objection certificate (NOC) for sale of his shop from officials of Municipal Corporation, Amritsar. The official said after a preliminary investigation, a VB team laid a trap and caught Sharma red handed while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000 from the complainant in the presence of two official witnesses. The VB has registered a case under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The accused would be produced in a competent court on Thursday, the official added. A labourer stitches sacks filled with wheat at Bhagtanwala Dana Mandi in Amritsar on Wednesday. Wheat arrival reaches 6 LMT, 2K MT crop remains unsold Tribune News Service Amritsar, May 8 A total of 6.46 LMT of wheat has reached grain markets till Wednesday evening with arrival of 21,639 MT crop in the past 24 hours. Of the total arrival, nearly 6.44 LMT has already been procured. District mandi officials said only 2,388 MT crop was left unsold till today evening. While the government procurement agencies have purchased a total of 5.95 LMT, the private traders have bought only 48,444 MT so far. On Wednesday, government agencies procured 21,015 MT, while private buyers purchased 833 MT. The district officials said Pungrain has procured a maximum of 1.32 lakh MT crop so far followed by Markfed with 1.53 lakh MT, Punsup 1.32 lakh MT, Punjab Warehousing Corporation 97,387 MT and Food Corporation of India 40,047 MT. Even as the harvesting of wheat in the fields is nearly over, the government pro- curement would continue till May 15. The Mandi Board officials stated as per the estimate a total of 7.5 lakh MT crop would arrive in the mandis this season. They stated that nearly one lakh MT crop would arrive in the markets in the coming few days. With the lifting of 18,448 MT on Tuesday, a total of 3.25 lakh MT of procured stocks have been shifted to the warehouses. However still 50 per cent of the total 6.44 lakh MT procurement is still lying in the markets. Observer imparts training to officials in monitoring candidates’ expenses Tribune News Service Amritsar, May 8 The Election Commission appointed Expenditure Observer for the Amritsar Lok Sabha constituency Ganesh Sudhakar, an IRS officer, today imparted training to Assistant Returning Officers and Assistant Expenditure Observers to keep a tab on the expenses incurred by the candidates during the elections. Sudhakar gave detailed information regarding the instructions of the Election Commission to monitor the election expenses being incurred by the candidates to the Assistant Returning Officers and Assistant Expenditure Observers of nine Vidhan Sabha constituencies under the Amritsar Lok Sabha constituency at the District Administrative Complex. He said the Election Commission should exercise full vigilance regarding the expenses fixed for the Lok Sabha elections and keep a close eye on the election expenses incurred by the candidates and complete videography of the election rallies and other public events conducted by the candidates should be done. He asked all election officials to ensure that the complaints received during the elections should be resolved within 30 minutes so that the Lok Sabha elections can be conducted in a transparent manner. The officials were told to ensure that the daily reports were sent on time so that further action could be taken on those reports. He also said that if a citi- zen makes any kind of complaint regarding the elections, then appropriate evidence should also be obtained. Sudhakar told the officials that the monitoring committees and other squads formed by the district administration to keep an eye on the election expenses should be equipped with all the relevant equipment at all times so that there is no trouble of any kind if necessary. Farmer who died at 2 city women step out of their mould to win titles at beauty pageants Shambhu border cremated at his village Neha Walia Tribune News Service Tarn Taran, May 8 Farmer Jaswant Singh (55), a resident of Shahbazpur in Tarn Taran district, who lost his life on Monday due to a cardiac attack at Shambhu border, was cremated at his native village here on Wednesday. The deceased was the area leader of the Kisan Sangarsh Coordination Committee, and had gone to the Shambhu border on April 30. He was found dead on Monday. The funeral procession was largely attended by the farmers and local residents. Tehsildar Nirmal Singh and DSP Goindwal Sahib were present at the time of the cremation. Sukhwinder Singh Sabhra, state president of the Kisan Jaswant Singh Sangarsh Coordination Committee, and the other paid rich tributes to the departed soul. Manmeet Kaur, a homemaker from the city, won the title of Mrs Vogue Star India 2024, becoming the winner from Punjab (in state category) and from Manmeet Kaur, and (right) Shivalika Khanna. There is a spark in every woman, you just need to realise it.” Another shining example is Dr Shivalika Khanna, who is an international weight loss consultant and nutritionist, recognised by the Ministry of Ayush. She represented India in Milestone’s Miss & Mrs India International Pageant, which was held at Bangkok from April 17 to April 20. Shivalika won the title of Milestone Mrs India International Classic 2024 amidst participants from various countries and another title of Glamour Queen at Milestone Pageant’s Subtitle Crowning Ceremony. A wellness enthusiast, Shivalika says that the victory marks the beginning of a journey filled with greater accomplishments and unforgettable moments. Now, she is all set to participate and represent India at the Milestone Global Pageant taking place in Dubai in September, 2024.
The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising four eminent persons as trustees.
The Tribune, the largest selling daily in North India, publishes news and views without any bias or prejudice of any kind. Restraint and moderation, rather than agitational language and partisanship, are the hallmarks of the paper. It is an independent newspaper in the real sense of the term.
The English edition apart, the 133-year-old Tribune has two sister publications, Punjabi Tribune (in Punjabi) and Dainik Tribune (in Hindi).
