The thieves also ransacked the school office and rooms. School principal Baljinder Singh said that the thieves barged into the school building from the rear by cutting the power lines. He said that the thieves locked an employee living inside his room, adding that the police had been informed and visited the spot. The principal said that the actions of thieves had been recorded in CCTVs installed in the school building. Increasing incidents of crime have exposed hollow police claims of special patrolling during the night. OC THREE HELD FOR CASTOR OIL THEFT Phagwara: The Nakodar city police busted a gang of thieves involved in theft of castor oil. Investigating Officer (IO) Sarabjit Singh said that the accused has been identified as Nanak Singh, a resident of Mohalla Saran, railway road, Nakodar, Rakesh Kumar, a resident of Burri Pind village, and Sunni, son of Jiwan Lal, a resident of Old Grain Market, Nakodar. The IO said that the police had received secret information that the accused had stolen two canes of castor oil weighing 20 litres each and were at Pandori village, awaiting customers. They were arrested and a case under Section 379 of the IPC has been registered against the accused. OC TWO BOOKED FOR PETROL PUMP LOOT Phagwara: The Bilga police have booked two unidentified miscreants on the charge of looting Rs 51,680 from a petrol pump at gunpoint. Ashish Misra, a native of UP and presently working at Hamara Petrol Pump in Sham Pur village on the NurmahalPhillaur Road, complained to the police that he was sitting in the office with his colleagues on May 7 around 8.30 pm when two persons with faces covered barged into office and threatened to shoot them if they did not part with the cash. Misra said that he gave them the cash fearing threat to his life, adding that he could recognise the accused from their tone of speaking and appearance. They fled towards Nurmahal after the loot. SHO Rajesh Thakur said a police team reached the spot and began investigations. A case under Sections 379-B(2) and 34 of the IPC and Sections 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act has been registered against the unidentified accused. OC Server problems at driving test & licence centre annoy residents Avneet Kaur Tribune News Service Jalandhar, May 8 The automated driving test and online licence centre, located near the bus stand, has been plagued by frequent server breakdowns, leaving the applicants in distress. Many have reported enduring long waits, sometimes returning empty-handed despite hours of waiting and being forced to make repeated visits. They claimed that while server problems had become a regular affair at the centre, it has worsened since last Thursday. Sukhjit Singh, who has been going to the centre since last Friday, said that it was his fourth visit today because his son’s driving licence application is stalled due to server issues. He mentioned that he visited the centre twice today. “In the morning, I had to leave empty-handed due to a server malfunction, and then I had to return in the afternoon when I found out the server was operational,” he said, Jalandhar, May 8 Following a raid in the Bhargo Camp area on Wednesday afternoon, the city police busted a drug trafficking network and arrested three of its key smugglers. The police also recovered about 1.1kg of heroin from their possession. The Commissioner of Police, Swapan Sharma, said the police party had received a tip-off about a gang involved in smuggling of illicit liquor, arms and drugs like heroin, tablets, and powder. He said subsequently, an FIR under Sections 61-1-14 of the Excise Act, 21/22 of the NDPS Act, and 25 Arms Act was registered against unknown individuals at PS Division 4. He said the police had conducted raids and arrested Varinder Kumar, Jatinder Kumar and Rohit Kumar, all residents of Bhargo Camp, and recovered a huge quantity of heroin from them. CP Sharma said multiple cases have been registered against the arrested accused, who were discovered to be central figures in this network. He said that six FIRs have been already pending against Varinder, and five against Rohit Kumar. Another applicant, Manisha, shared her experience, stating that she arrived to take the test at 10:30 am and finished all formalities within an hour. “After the test, I was directed to wait in the hall for the photograph. However, I had to endure an additional two-hour wait due to a server issue. Waiting in such hot weather was extremely challenging,” she added. The applicants informed that though it should take only 30 to 40 minutes to complete the process from getting the token to clicking the photograph, they were forced to sit for more than three hours due to the slow speed of the server. Furthermore, it came to light that while renewal and applications for new licences were being processed despite server issues, the learner licence applications were stalled due to a severe technical glitch on the website. Despite applicants submitting their requests online, the approval from the Transport Department is pending due to a back-end issue, thus increasing the pendency. Meanwhile, Assistant Transport Officer (ATO) Vishal Goel said that he had already reported the matter to the head office regarding technical glitches and server issues, and it has also been reported to the company concerned for resolution. “We are hopeful that the issue will be resolved soon,” he added. According to the information received, Malkit Singh, a resident of village Hardothala, told the police that he received information from Koliyan, the village of his in-laws, that his brother-in-law had died and his last rites were to be performed. He went to his inlaws’ house and saw that there were injury marks on his brother-in-law’s face due to which it seemed as if he had been murdered. He told the police that his brother-in-law Booti Ram often had quarrels with his wife Amandeep Kaur. The Commissioner of Police, Swapan Sharma, said they had received information about a foul smell emanating from a locked house in the Gadaipur locality. He said the police teams from the Police Station Division 8 responded to the call and reached the spot with fingerprint and dog squad teams. He said during the search of the said house, a body of the deceased, identified as Vinod Kumar, was recovered from a bed box. Till today, 49 stubble burning cases were reported, from Bhogpur, Shahkot and Phillaur blocks. The actual scenario, however, will be clear in the coming days. In 2022, the cases were 357 till May 7. However, 20 cases of waste stubble burning were registered today, all of them from Bhogpur. Agriculture Officer Jaswinder Singh said that the department had been organising camps to encourage farmers not to burn stubble. “Also, this time they have been making fodder,” he added. The farmers of Bajra village in Kartarpur tehsil also used to burn stubble, but no case has been registered here for Wheat stubble set on fire in a village in Hoshiarpur. Comedian Neetu files papers as Independent Jalandhar, May 8 Comedian and YouTuber Neetu Shatranwala on Wednesday filed his papers as Independent candidate from Jalandhar Lok Sabha seat. He is the first candidate to file his papers from Jalandhar as today was the second day and no paper was filed from here on the first day yesterday. He was a complete non-entity till five years ago when he had contested Independently in 2019. Then only running a workshop of shuttering business, he had polled only five votes and had come out crying from the counting station saying that even his family of nine members had not cast vote in his favour.
