Aujla posts SAD (Amritsar) chief’s video clip amid election campaign Tribune News Service Amritsar, May 25 Amid the ongoing high pitch election campaign, Congress candidate Gurjeet Singh Aujla seems to have got support from an unexpected quarter as he shared a video clip in which SAD (Amritsar) president Simranjit Singh Mann was seen praising him for his bravery during the security breach inside the parliament in December last year. Notably, Aujla had shown remarkable courage when he pinned down one of the two intruders and snatched a canister from him when they threw smoke bombs inside the Lok Sabha chamber on December 13 last year. Aujla shared a clip of an interview of Simranjit Singh Amritsar, May 25 Two unknown armed persons shot at a commission agent in Uthian village falling under the Rajasansi police station here yesterday. Interestingly, SAD (Amritsar) president’s son Iman Singh Mann is also contesting the election from the constituency against Aujla. Though Iman Singh Mann is not considered a serious contender, his party’s vote base in the state is surely increasing, especially after senior Mann’s victory from Sangrur in the previous LS elections. As the panthic vote bank is disenchanted with the SAD led by Sukhbir Singh Badal, votes seems to be shifting in favour of Mann. Though they are from opposite political parties, Aujla’s efforts to acknowledge validation from Mann seems to be an endeavour to appease latter’s supporters and get a few extra votes. Cong’sstarcampaignersShashiTharoor, Supriya Sule to engage with city voters Neha Saini Commission agent ~60 lakh unaccounted cash seized shot at in Uthian village REQUEST FOR BRAVERY AWARD Amritsar, May 25 As the last phase of the Lok Sabha (LS) elections would end on June 1, star campaigners are heading to Punjab to campaign for their respective candidates. Congress’ big wigs, including its Members of Parliament Shashi Tharoor and Supriya Sule, would be engaging with voters in the city. Accomplished Parliamentarians, both Shashi and Sule are known to speak about facts while taking the BJP to task in debates. They would take up ground issues pertaining to industry, trade and education sector with voters. Tharoor, who attended a professionals’ conference in Jalandhar today, would be holding a business conference tomorrow in Amritsar. Sule would meet students and entrepreneurs in the holy city. Interestingly, instead of opting for roadshow or rally, ❝ As we all know that both Tharoor and Sule are excellent speakers and more than the star power, we want to share their brain power with voters. Also, engaging with voters directly through one-onone meets allows healthy and unscripted interaction wherein voters can share their views and opinions and challenges being faced by them. ❞ Nighat Aujla, GURJEET AUJLA’S DAUGHTER like the opponents in the AAP and the Bharatiya Janata Party, Congress candidate Gurjeet Singh Aujla invited Tharoor and Supriya Sule for a direct interaction with voters in the city. While Aujla’s campaign team is focusing on advertising for Rahul Gandhi’s maha rally, Tharoor and Sule would be holding open meetings. “This has been done to keep promoting quality engagement with voters. As we all know that both Tharoor and Sule are excellent speakers and more than the star power, we want to share their brain power with voters. Also, engaging with voters directly through one-onone meets allows healthy and unscripted interaction wherein voters can share their views and opinions and challenges being faced by them,” said Nighat Aujla, daughter of Gurjeet Singh Aujla, who is part of his campaign management team. Last week, Sachin Pilot, former Deputy Chief Minister of Rajasthan, held a rally in favour of Gurjeet Aujla in Ajnala. Of course, Rahul Gandhi was here to go all out and pull the audience for the Congress candidate. The party would be banking on other star campaigners in the days to come to pull some tricks in favour of Aujla before elections. Turncoat ex-councillors remain Parties’ manifestos sans environmental concerns draw flak elusive from election campaign PK Jaiswar Tribune News Service Charanjit Singh Teja Tribune News Service Amritsar, May 25 A number of former councillors, who shifted their loyalty from the Congress to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) are not active in the ongoing election campaign. They are considered a misfit in the new party. Some of them have returned to the Congress fold. Besides, former Mayor Karamjit Singh Rintu, who had joined the AAP before the Assembly elections is also inactive in the poll campaign. He is not seen on any party platform. There were total of 33 municipal corporation councillors from the Congress, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), who had joined the AAP after the formation of its government in the state. Out of these councillors, 25 are from the Congress. Recently, former councillors Nisha Dhillon and Talwinder Kaur ❝Turncoats don’t get in recognition and respect a new party. Former Deputy Mayor and senior Congress leader Raman Bakshi claimed that several former councillors, who had joined the AAP were now willing to return to the parent party, which had made a strict policy for turncoats. “The Congress has made a policy for the turncoats. The people with clean image are welcome into the party fold. There are some former councillors, involved in ill deeds, joined the AAP to save their skin. We will not allow them to come back to the party. How can we can we believe that they would stay with us in the future,” said Bakshi. A few former councillors, who left the Congress and joined the AAP last year, further joined the BJP after the announcement of the Lok Sabha elections. “Turncoats don’t get recognition and respect in a new party. However, only a few turncoats get respect and recognition. Such regular shuffling of parties spoils political career,” said Kuljeet Singh, an activist. Amritsar, May 25 Although, all prominent contestants from different political parties have released their vision documents promising all round development of the holy city, they have given the environment a miss. As the people are facing environment challenges globally, the holy city of Amritsar cannot remain untouched. Environmentalists are left aghast over indifferent attitude of political parties over such an imperative issue. “How can they imagine development without sustainable environment where you don’t have clean and safe drinking water, pure air to breathe and land without pollution,” said Jagmohan Singh, director, Indo-Global NGO Forum. He said the environment should be on priority list of politicians. “Majority of the areas in Amritsar are facing the problem of contaminated water supply and garbage dumps in every nook and corner,” he added. “As many as 108 out of 146 c m y b Highly contaminated water and waste in Tung Dhab drain in Amritsar is a major cause of concern for residents of nearby localities. blocks fall under the dark zone in Punjab. Ten out of 15 blocks in Amritsar alone fall under this category,” said Jagmohan. He said Punjab would face severe water crisis in the next 10 to 15 years. Dr Inderjit Kaur, president, All India Pingalwara Charitable Society, which is also involved in spreading awareness about preservation of environment said, “Rising pollution has been a global phenomenon leading to drastic climate changes and Punjab is no different.” She said, “It is an irony that saving environment comes in pollution has been global ❝Risingclimate changes andaPunjabphenomenon leading to drastic is no different. Pingalwara society is already working on the model of saving environment and judicial use of natural resources. The society recently released a green manifesto questioning candidates on various environmental issues concerning the city. Rajvir Singh, another environmentalist, said if the gov- ernments failed to take adequate measures in the near future to tackle the rising pollution levels, nothing would be left for the coming generations. Former Ambassador and BJP candidate Taranjit Singh Sandhu said, “When we talk about over all development of Amritsar, it includes environment also. We have promised to cover Tung Dhab drain and make the city garbage free. All this comes under environmental concerns.” He said, “We have all the plans to develop the city just like Indore which has set an example for the country.”
