Station House Officer (SHO) Aman Saini said the first suspect was identified as Ravinder Kaushal, alias Raju Raj, a resident of Mohalla Baghwala, Shahkot. The SHO said 5 grams of heroin and Rs 8,100 drug money was recovered from him. The SHO said the second suspect was identified as Lal Chand, a resident of Sindhar village. The SHO said 3 grams of heroin was recovered from him. The third suspect was identified as Saabi, a resident of Malsian village. The SHO said 170 intoxicant tablets (loose) were recovered from him. He said cases under Sections 21/22/27 /61/85 of the NDPAS Act were registered against three suspects. OC ONE NABBED FOR SELLING LIQUOR Phagwara: The Lohian Khas police have arrested a villager for selling illicit country-made liquor. Investigating officer Avtar Singh said 15 bottles of illicit liquor were recovered from the suspect, identified as Binder Singh, a resident of Mianni village. A case under Section 61/1/14 of the Punjab Excise Act was registered against the suspect. OC WOMAN CONSUMES MEDICINE, DIES Phagwara: A married woman died after consuming an expired medicine. Investigating officer (IO) Ashwani Kumar said the deceased was identified as Gurjit Kaur, wife of Avtar Singh, a resident of Talwann village. Hardeep Singh, son of the deceased, told the police that his mother consumed an expired medicine by mistake and died. The IO said the police acting under Section 174 of the CrPC handed over the body of the deceased to the family after post-mortem examination. OC MARRIED WOMAN GOES MISSING Phagwara: The Nakodar city police have registered a missing report in connection with the disappearance of a married woman. Baljinder Singh, a resident of Indra Colony, here complained to the police that his wife Jasvir Kaur left home on May 12, but did not return. Investigating officer Ravinder Pal Singh said a missing report had been filed in this connection. The assets owned by him, his wife Meeta Angural and two kids were worth Rs 2.76 crore in 2022. Their present value is Rs 3.14 crore. The value of his jewellery has increased to Rs 11.97 lakh. Angural has five cars, including Fortuner, Toyota Corolla, Ritz, Wagon R and Ambassador, which he owned in 2022 too. Angural also has an insurance policy worth Rs 1 crore. The liabilities of Angurals have, however, decreased. He had a car and auto loans worth Rs 23.17 lakh which reduced to Rs 11.35 lakh. Two-time councillor Surjit Kaur is Shiromani Akali Dal nominee WEST ASSEMBLY BYPOLL Tribune News Service Jalandhar, June 20 On the penultimate day of filing nomination papers for Jalandhar West Assembly bypoll, Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) on Thursday announced the candidature of two-time councillor Surjit Kaur from the seat. Akali Dal seems to have made choice in consonance with the Congress which too had announced the candidature of its five-time councillor Surinder Kaur. Surjit Kaur is SAD nominee Bibi Surjit Kaur the wife of deceased Akali leader and one-time councillor Pritam Singh. Sharing details of the same, senior leader Jagir Kaur said a decision to this effect was taken by a four- member committee constituted by party president Sukhbir Singh Badal to decide on the SAD candidate. The other members of the committee were Gurpartap Singh Wadala, Dr Sukhwinder Sukhi and Mohinder Singh Kaypee. Jagir Kaur said Surjit Kaur came from a panthic background. While three Independent candidates had filed their papers yesterday, six more filed their nominations today. Tomorrow is the last day for filing papers. The candidates, who filed papers today include former MLA Sheetal Angural as the BJP candidate, a booth-level worker Binder Kumar as the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) nominee, Sarabjit Singh as the Shiromani Akali Dal (A) candidate, Iqbal Chand as National Ekta Party aspirant, and Independent candidates Neetu Shatranwala and Ajay Kumar. Forty-six leaders of the AAP (23 outside MPs, ministers, MLAs and leaders and 23 local MLAs, functionaries and others) will oversee 23 wards in the Jalandhar West Assembly constituency for the upcoming bypoll. The AAP has deployed 181 workers (one person per booth) for 181 booths in the Jalandhar West constituency. The duties were delegated at a meeting convened by AAP national general secre- tary Sandeep Pathak, in the presence of party candidate Mohinder Bhagat today. Hoshiarpur, June 20 Dr Balbir Singh, Minister of Health and Family Welfare, Punjab, visited the Civil Hospital in Hoshiarpur today. He took stock of the health facilities being provided to the general public and also inspected the De-addiction and Rehabilitation Centre. Dr Balbir Singh said the purpose of his visit to the hospital was to ensure quality health services to the general public of the district by strengthening the infrastructure and facilities. Expressing satisfaction over the functioning of the district hospital, Dr Balbir Singh said the Punjab Government was fully committed to provide world-class health facilities to the general public and appropriate steps were being taken on priority basis in this direction. Students of Government Primary School, Sidhupur village, would not be attending classes in their own school. Rather, they would be studying in a nearby panchayat ghar. It was in September last year when the roof of school verandah collapsed and students were then shifted to a nearby panchayat ghar. Nine months have passed, but nothing has been done to repair the school building. As per information, the school building developed some cracks after floods hit the Lohian block. She said, “We hope that grants will be released soon for the repair of the school building and students will be shifted to the institution premises.” When the incident had happened, the school authorities had immediately contacted officials concerned. The Block Primary Education Officer (BPEO), along with officials of the Education Department had visited the school, but still everything remained the same. “The BPEO has asked us to take classes in a nearby panchayat ghar. We have also checked the safety of the panchayat ghar. Everything is fine there. We don’t want to compromise students’ safety,” a teacher had then said. The kitchen and rooms of the school are also in a poor condition. There is only one teacher and 25 students in the Sidhupur village school. A similar incident had happened in Baddowal village too where a teacher had died while two others suffered injuries after the roof of Government Senior Secondary School collapsed. The incident had sent shock waves among the teaching community. Scared after the incident, teachers said there were several school buildings that had developed cracks after floods hit the Lohian block.
