People from Basti Danishmanda recently held a huge protest against the civic body for not paying attention to their problems. They even raised slogans against the authorities for not taking up their issues. As byelections for the Jalandhar West Assembly constituency are approaching, The Tribune took a look at Basti Danishmanda, which is among the oldest areas of the city. It got its name Danishmanda because of the genius and intelligence of persons (referred to as Danishmands in Urdu) living here. Among them, a majority were Muslims. ‘Peeli Kothi’ is a landmark of Basti Danishmanda. Residents said Basti Danishmanda is known for this kothi and everyone who comes from outside surely goes to have a look at it. People said one of the families of Danishmands used to live in the kothi and the bun- Boyfriend booked for minor’s rape Amritsar, June 23 A 16-year-old girl was allegedly raped by her boyfriend at a hotel two days ago. The incident came to light when the victim’s health deteriorated. The victim in her statement to the police stated that she, along with her sister, went to meet her relatives at Mehta where the suspect, Jatinder Singh, used to come often. They became friends and the suspect shared his mobile number with her. She said on Friday, Jatinder came on a bike and offered to buy her a pair of sandals. The victim said she accompanied him, but the suspect, instead of taking her to a shop, took her to a hotel room on the Mehta-Jalandhar road where he raped her. She alleged they stayed there for an hour and later he dropped her outside her uncle’s residence in Mehta. She said following this, her health deteriorated and she was rushed to the Baba Bakala Civil Hospital from where she was referred to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital where she is under treatment. Man killed, 2 hurt as car hits roadside tree in Hoshiarpur Our Correspondent Talwara, June 23 A person was killed while two others suffered injuries when the car they were travelling in rammed into a roadside tree on the Talwara-Hajipur road near Gera village here this morning. The deceased has been identified as Ravinder Kumar Jain, a resident of Lambi Gali, Mukerian. Rohit Jain, a resident of Mukerian, who was driving the car, and Bakshish Singh, a resident of Madinpur, suffered serious injuries in the mishap. According to information, the trio was going towards Mukerian from Talwara in a car. When they reached near Thada Sahib Gurdwara at Gera village, their vehicle rammed into a roadside tree. Ravinder died on the spot, while Bakshish and Rohit suffered serious injuries in the mishap. The injured persons were shifted to the Civil Hospital, Hajipur. Owing to his serious condition, Bakshish was referred to a private hospital in Jalandhar. After getting information, ASI Gurwinderjit Singh from the Hajipur police station reached the spot. The police took the body into their possession and started further investigations. Drunk ASI rams car into 2 PCR cops near Jalandhar bypass, one killed Bikers target jewellery shop in Hoshiarpur Ludhiana, June 23 A car driven rashly by an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) hit two PCR police personnel who were eating ice cream on the roadside near Jalandhar bypass. The car dragged both of them on the road for a few metres. One of the policeman died while the other was injured in the accident. The deceased has been identified as head constable Akashdeep Singh. His colleague ASI Satnam Singh is undergoing treatment at DMC Hospital. After the accident, the Salem Tabri police arrested the suspect who was driving the car. He was identified as ASI Balwinder Singh. The suspect is posted at the Division No. 2 police station. He was coming from the Jalandhar bypass around 12.30 am last night. The accident happened as the ASI was reportedly drunk. The police said: “During further interrogation, the suspects confessed that they used to come to Punjab by train and supply drugs to their clients in various parts of the state.” The police said further investigations were on into the matter. After getting information about the incident, the SSP , DSP (City) and in-charge of the city police station reached the spot. An employee at the jewellery shop, Shri Nath Tanch Marathi Goldsmith, told the police that people often come to the shop to get the quality of gold checked. The owner of the jewellery shop had gone to his village in Maharashtra. He told the police that he opened the shop at 8:30 am today. The police are scrutinising the footage of CCTV cameras installed nearby to get clue about the suspects. 28-yr-old dies of ‘drug overdose’ Our Correspondent Tarn Taran, June 23 An addict of the local Gokalpur locality died of drug overdose here on Sunday. The deceased has been identified as Manmohan Singh Mani (28), who was a labourer in the local grain market. Kulwant Singh, a relative of the victim, said he started indulging in drugs months ago and syringes were recovered near the body. He said Gokalpur, Muradpur, Nanaksar and others were among the infamous localities of the town where the contraband is easily available round the clock. The body was cremated without any intimation to the police. DSP Tarsem Masih said the police were not informed of the addict’s death.
