Nakodar Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Kulwinder Singh Virk, who is investigating officer in this case, said the suspects had been identified as Balraj Singh, a resident of Talwandi Bharo village, and his brother Sukhraj Singh. Sourav Sharma, a resident of Chuharr village, told the police that he paid ~48.44 lakh to the suspects to facilitate his migration abroad. However, they neither sent him abroad, nor returned the money. A case has been registered against the suspects. OC 3 DRUG PEDDLERS LAND IN POLICE NET Phagwara: The Lohian Khas police have arrested a woman drug peddler on the charge of selling poppy husk. Investigating officer (IO) Jasbir Singh said 2 kg of poppy husk was recovered from her possession. The suspect has been identified as Amandeep Kaur, alias Seema, a resident of Mundi Shehriyan village. The IO said a case under Sections 15, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act had been registered against the suspect. Meanwhile, the Shahkot police arrested a drug peddler with 215 loose intoxicant tablets. The suspect has been identified as Jaswinder Singh, alias Jassa, a resident of Raje Wal village. The Nurmahal police arrested a drug peddler, Jaskaran, alias Kran, a resident of Pasla village, with 100 intoxicant tablets. OC FACTORY WORKER DIES BY SUICIDE Phagwara: A factory worker reportedly died by suicide by hanging himself at his house in Khalsa Nagar here on Monday. The deceased had been identified as Lakhwinder Singh, the police said. Matrimonial dispute was said to be the reason behind him taking the extreme step. The police handed over the body to his family members after the postmortem examination. They have registered a case and initiated further investigations into the matter. Today, members of the Democratic Rights Sabha and Taraksheel Society held a protest outside Desh Bhagat Yadgar Hall over the use of anti-terror law in India to silence critics and submitted a memorandum to SDM-1 Jai Inder demanding withdrawal of cases against author Arundhati Roy and Sheikh Showkat Hussain over their comments on Kashmir. Yesterday, members of the Democratic Teachers’ Front (DTF), Contractual Veterinary Class IV Union and the Art and Craft Teachers’ Union protested against the state government in Jalandhar West, pressing for their long-pending demands. When he reached near the cremation ground at Darava, two motorcycle-borne miscreants approached him. The pillion rider attacked him with a datar, following which he fell on the road. They snatched the motorcycle from him and fled the spot. A case was registered at the Adampur police station. A spe- cial team nabbed Gurpreet Singh, alias Gopi, a resident of Jande Sarai village in Kartarpur, and Karan Singh, alias Kanu, a resident of Alampur Bakka village in Jalandhar, from Canal Guest House in Adampur. During investigation, they told the police about their accomplice, identified as Baldev Singh, alias Vicky, alias Gyani, of Dainwind village in Kapurthala. The police arrested Baldev and recovered the snatched motorcycle from his possession. SSP Gupta said the trio confessed to carrying out 16 snatching and loot incidents in Kapurthala, Kartarpur and Adampur. In the first accident, two labourers were killed after a speeding truck hit them on the highway near Khusropur, while another accident took place at old Dana Mandi in which a woman labourer died would gherao the house of the AAP candidate in Jalandhar West. It got reignited on Saturday after AAP spokesperson Malwinder Kang alleged that Sheetal Angural was extorting money even from an ice-cream vendor. After this, both sides released audios questioning the morality of the candidates. AAP candidate Mohinder Bhagat has even lodged a complaint in this regard with the city police terming the audio fake. The matter reached the next level today after Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann got some major joinings done in the party, all of whom were from the BJP. A senior police official said a death due to rash driving was reported on Sunday. In the first match, PIS, Ludhiana, defeated SGPC Hockey Academy, Amritsar, (3-2), while Surjit Hockey Academy, Jalandhar, defeated PIS, Mohali, (4-2) in another match of the day. In the first league match, PIS, Ludhiana, gave a tough fight to SGPC Hockey Academy, Amritsar. Harshdeep Singh of SGPC scored a field goal in the third minute of the game to make the score 1-0. In the next minute, Ludhiana’s Mahabir Singh equalised the score by converting the penalty corner into a goal. Next matches of the league round will be played on July 6 and 7 at the International Hockey Stadium in Mohali. — TNS Jalandhar, July 1 Jai Inder Kaur, president of the Bharatiya Janata Party’s Mahila Morcha in Punjab, today submitted a memorandum to the Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Jalandhar, urging prompt action against the rampant drug activity at Bhagat Buddha Mal Park in Bhargo Camp in the bypollbound Jalandhar West Assembly seat. Jai Inder Kaur, daughter of former Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh, expressed grave concern over open sale and consumption of drugs in the park, which has become a hotspot for drug peddlers and addicts, posing a significant threat to the health and wellbeing of the local community, especially children and youth. Through the memorandum, she demanded that raids be conducted and those involved in drug peddling be apprehended. She also demanded that police patrolling be increased in the area to deter drug activity. She also sought collaboration with the local authorities to create awareness and support for drug prevention.
