After a fight at home, the accused repeatedly hit his father on the head with a thick wooden stick. The deceased has been identified as Jaswinder Singh. After the incident, the accused tried to escape but the neighbours locked him in the room and called the police. The cops arrested the accused later. The accused has been identified as Prabhjot Singh (24). The incident occured on August 20. The complainant, Butta Singh, who is the sarpach of the village, told the police that after villagers got suspicious that accused might have done something wrong, the villagers saw Jaswinder Singh lying in a pool of blood in a room. The wooden beam was stained with blood. Meanwhile, villagers said accused Prabhjot was not mentally fit and used to fight with his father and mother. — TNS Gangster Newton’s arrest shows chinks in jail security Nikhil Bhardwaj Tribune News Service Ludhiana, August 21 The arrest of Category-A gangster Sagar Newton by the Ludhiana police has exposed the chinks in jail security system of Punjab once again. Alleged gangster Newton who is facing 18 cases of murder, attempt to murder, drugs smuggling, dacoity, robbery and arms smuggling was arrested by the police from Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh on August 19. The interrogation of Newton led to the revelation that while he was on the run, he was constantly in touch with dreaded gangster Butta Khan alias Bagga Khan who is also facing dozens of cases including attempt to murder, robberies, drugs smuggling, arms smuggling etc. Bagga Khan is also known as a big drug smuggler and arms supplier of Links with jailed Bagga Khan being probed Punjab. When Bagga was lodged in Amritsar jail in 2019, he met a smuggler who further established his contacts with Tariq Ahmed of Dubai. In connivance with Tariq, while in jail, Bagga had ordered 22 kg of heroin from Himachal, which was sent to Saharanpur. Eight months ago, in 2023, Khanna police had also brought Bagga for questioning in connection with the supply of arms. Now, he is lodged in a jail in Punjab. Police officials privy to the investigation said that that during questioning of gangster Newton, he confessed to having contacts with Bagga Khan who is lodged in jail. Man rapes niece Ludhiana, August 21 The Ladhowal police station yesterday registered a case against a man who allegedly raped the daughter of his sister-in-law at Mannewal village in Ladhowal. The accused has been identified as Harjinder Singh, of Mal Singh Wala, Mansa. Victim’s mother alleged that on August 18, Harjinder Singh visited their house. The woman revealed that the accused forcibly took her daughter inside the room where he developed sexual relations with her. The complainant said when she got to know about sexual assault on her daughter, she lodged a complaint. Further investigation was underway. — TNS Ensure lifting of segregated waste: MC chief to officials Ludhiana, August 21 Municipal Corporation (MC) Commissioner Sandeep Rishi has directed the civic body officials to ensure lifting of segregated dry and wet waste from the households as well as from the static compactor sites across the city. MC Commissioner Sandeep Rishi issued the directions while conducting a meeting with the health branch officials at MC Zone D office on Wednesday. MC Joint Commissioner Inderpal, CSO Ashwani Sahota, Health Officer Vipal Malhotra, Chief Sanitary Inspectors (CSI), Sanitary Inspectors (SI) among others were present in the meeting. During the meeting, Sandeep Rishi also directed the officials to ensure windrow composting of wet waste at the main dump site of the civic body. The accused identified as Manjit Singh, a resident of Ikolahi village, has been arrested by the police. Deceased’s brother Gurdeep Singh alleged that his sister Ranjit Kaur got married to Manjit Singh about three years back. The complainant alleged that since the day of marriage of her sister, her husband had been harassing her on one pretext or other. Recenty, the accused beaten up the deceased due to which his sister came to our house and lived here edor for some days. On August 19, his sister along with her son went to her husband’s house. Yesterday morning, Manjit had badly beaten up the deceased due to which she committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan.Complainant Gurdeep asserted that his sister ended her life due to the torture meted out to her by the accused. The action was taken on the directions of MC Commissioner Sandeep Rishi. Assistant Town Planner (ATP Z-D) Jagdeep Singh said that the civic body team came to know about the illegal construction in Model Town extension during routine inspection and the building was sealed on Wednesday. Speaking of the illegal building near Mali Ganj, Building Inspector Navneet Khokhar said that the building was sealed in the past too and the owner was directed to get a building plan approved before restarting the construction works. But the owner restarted construction works without getting the building plan approved from the civic body. So the building has again been sealed. MC chief Sandeep Rishi said strict directions have been issued to the building branch officials to take stern action against illegal constructions. Ludhiana, August 21 Continuing the special cleanliness drive on the third consecutive day on Wednesday, Municipal Corporation (MC) organised plastic plogging and collection drives in open areas/parks/roadsides in different parts of the city on Wednesday. The initiative has been taken under the five-day special cleanliness drive launched on the directions of CM Bhagwant Singh Mann. The plastic plogging and collection drives were organised in different open areas and green belts/parks in Sarabha Nagar, old GT road, Haibowal, Sarabha Nagar, Lohara, Sunet, Sherpur chowk, Gill road among other areas on Wednesday. MC Joint Commissioner Inderpal said the five-day special cleanliness drive commenced on August 19 and garbage vulnerable points (GVP) are being removed from different parts of the city. The plastic plogging drives would also be organised on Thursday and the collected plastic waste would be sent to material recover facilities (MRF) for recycling purposes. On August 23, Harit Punjab City Compost (compost prepared from the wet waste) would be distributed among the residents free of cost by organising camps in different parts of the city. MC chief Sandeep Rishi appealed to the residents to participate in the drive and support the authorities in solid waste management. — TNS c m y b Ludhiana, August 21 Rajya Sabha MP Sant Balbir Singh Seechewal on Wednesday instructed the Municipal Corporation (MC) and Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) to impose environment compensation (EC) on the dairy units that are polluting Buddha Nullah by disposing of cow dung into it. He issued these instructions during a meeting with Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney, MC Commissioner Sandeep Rishi, and officials from PPCB, Drainage, Rural Development, and other departments to review the Buddha Nullah rejuvenation project here. Emphasising the commitment of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to clean the Sutlej tributary, the MP said the government funds were being utilised to clean the Buddha Nullah, and the officials must take strict measures to stop the pollution. He stressed that punitive action must be taken against those at fault. He also asked the officials to ban cattle grazing on the sides of Buddha Nullah where saplings have been planted in recent months. MP Seechewal also ordered PPCB officials to take strict action against dyeing industries that were dumping untreated waste into the MC sewer lines. The officials have been tasked with identifying units releasing hazardous heavy metals into the Buddha Nullah. Discussions were held on various aspects of the Buddha Nullah rejuvenation project, including solid waste management, functioning of sewage treatment plants (STPs), and effluent treatment plants (ETPs). Deputy Commissioner Sakshi Sawhney informed MP Seechewal that more than 70 FIRs have already been regis- tered against the dairy owners, who were found dumping cow dung into the Buddha Nullah in the past. In most cases, electricity connections have also been disconnected. She asked the MC and PPCB to issue showcause notices against defaulting dairy units and later impose EC as per the norms. Seechewal said like Kali Bein, Buddha Nullah was also a part of state’s heritage and it holds religious importance as Guru Nanak Dev visited the site near Gurdwara Gau Ghat. The residents who were dumping the waste/ garbage in the Sutlej tributary were committing heinous crimes as the Buddha Nullah merges into Sutlej, which is further a drinking water source for a large number of residents in Rajasthan and Punjab as well. — TNS
