Praveen Prasoon, Senior Superintendent, Post Office, Amritsar Mandal, said the department was established on October 1, 1854, which is why National Postal Week is celebrated every year in October. During the week, according to the services of the postal department, various activities will be organised in which World Postal Day, Financial Empowerment Day, Philately Day, Mail and Parcel Day, Antyodaya Diwas, etc, are prominent. “During this week, the Department of Post, Amritsar PLI, at various places, RPLI, savings bank and Aadhaar card related camp will be organised. Besides, a seminar will also be organiszed at the Amritsar head post office on October 8 in which schoolchildren will be made aware of functioning of the department and stamps. The seminar will be organised on October 7 at the Postal Export Centre located at the head post office, Rialto Chowk. Business parcels and all other parcels to be sent abroad are treated on a priority basis at the Post Export Centre. — TNS Chaos reigns in filing of nominations for rural poll Officials manhandled, brawls reported from blocks in district Charanjit Singh Teja Tribune News Service Amritsar, October 4 Major chaos was reported outside all Block Development and Panchayat Offices (BPDOs) in the district with Friday being the last day for filing of nominations for the panchayat elections. Hundreds of aspirants for the post of Sarpanch and Panchs got only four hours to file their nominations after two public holidays. The Election Commission had directed that the process of filing nominations should end by 3 pm but the submission of papers was going on till 6.30 pm in various blocks. A number of aspirants even failed to submit their papers due to the chaos. In Chogawan block, the aspirants waited till 6 pm, standing in queues, but when their turn did not come to file the nominations, they entered the office forcefully and manhandled the staff. The police and civil administration failed to make proper arrangements to handle the situation. District mandi officials said nearly 2,09,596 metric tonnes (MT) of crop, including 2,01,477 MT of basmati, had arrived in the markets so far. Today’s total purchase was 15,272 MT. The maximum purchase was made by private players at 14,665 MT while government agencies purchased only 607 MT. So far, total government procurement had reached at 741 MT. Owing to high moisture content in grains, procurement was going on at slow place. District agriculture officials said most crops in the district were not yet ready for harvesting. Officials appealed to farmers to bring fully ripened crop to the market so that it could be purchased on the same day Amritsar, October 4 The city police have seized two country-made .32 bore pistols during the interrogation of two criminals who were brought on a production warrant from the Amritsar Central Jail in two separate incidents. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Vishaljit Singh said Ravinder Singh, alias Kaka Chitti, of Milap Avenue was arrested by the police in connection with seizure of drugs. The police had arrested a woman drug peddler on June 16 with 50 gm of heroin. Her interrogation had led to the arrest of Ravinder Singh who was currently languishing in jail. He was brought on a production warrant from jail and following his disclosure, the police seized a .32 bore pistol along with two live bullets from his possession. The agencies were not ready to purchase grains with more moisture than the permissible limit, they said. The Central Government had fixed 17 per cent moisture content as permissible limit for the procurement of paddy grains, officials said. Five workers of the Congress party were injured when firing took place in Naushehra Pannuan over the filing of nominations. Taking serious note of the incidents of violence, leaders of the Congress party led by PPCC president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, former Lok Sabha member Jasbir Singh Dimpa, Sukhpal Singh Bhullar, Ramanjit Singh Sikki (both former MLAs) and other leaders met Deputy Commissioner Paramvir Singh and SSP Gaurav Toora. The leaders demanded action against the miscreants.
