Jagjit Singh, one of the family members of the victim, said: A ‘jago’ was being taken out at the residence of Harbans Singh, whose son Gurbir Singh was getting married. He said they had old enmity with a neighbour, Jagdish Singh Deesha, an NRI from Germany, over some land dispute. Deesha was not invited to the wedding. On Tuesday night, when jago was being taken out at the house, women from the family and guests were dancing to the beats of DJ. He said Deesha went up to the rooftop and started making a video of the women who were dancing. When he was stopped from doing the same, he allegedly threw his glass of whiskey towards them and then fired shots in the air. Two of the bullets hit Mandeep in his arm. He was rushed to a hospital. In-charge, police chowki, Kayani Kalan, Jaspal Singh, said Deesha fired three shots, of which two hit Mandeep. The suspect was arrested and would be produced before court. No let-up in snatching incidents in city areas Shivani Bhakoo Tribune News Service Ludhiana, December 4 Though the city police have been claiming to arrest one or two or even more persons in snatching incidents on a daily basis, such incidents are on the rise in the city. On an average, two-three incidents of snatching are reported every day while many go unreported. Women feel insecure when they go out alone as they think they could be vulnerable targets of snatchers. Snatching incidents are not restricted in backward areas of the city as victims in posh areas such as Civil Lines, Ghumar Mandi and Model Town are also targeted by the miscreants. In the past few days, many snatching incidents were reported from certain areas of the city. The Division Number 3 police have arrested Charandeep Singh, a resident of Shimlapuri, for targeting a 43year-old woman. The complainant, Shabnam, a resident of Janakpuri, complained that when she was returning home on December 3, three persons on a motorcycle tried to snatch her mobile phone near the fish market. The suspects nabbed by Police Division Number 8 in Ludhiana. TWO-THREE INCIDENTS REPORTED DAILY On an average, two or three incidents of snatching are reported every day while many go unreported in the city. She said she was dragged by them to a few yards but she was able to get hold of one person and others managed to flee. The suspect, Charandeep, was handed over to the police and a case was registered against the trio. In another incident registered at Division Number 4 police station, the complainant, Arman Malik, alleged that he used to polish ornaments at Sarafan Bazaar. On the evening of December 2, after polishing gold earrings and rings, when Arman was going to handover the ornaments to his employer Gurdip Singh, a person came and started talking to him and took the ornaments from his pocket. The complainant said somebody called Gurdip that the person, who had looted his employee Arman, was roaming in the market. He and Gurdip went to the place and with the help of other shopkeepers caught the suspect, c m y b Iqbal Hussain of MP and , handed over to the police. In yet another incident, the Sahnewal police have arrested Lashman Kumar of New Azad Nagar, here, who looted a person on November 30. The complainant, Murshad, a resident of Saharanpur, complained that he was working on a project of the NHAI near Dhandari Kalan. On the night of November 30, when he went to have dinner in a tent, a person came, who was holding an iron rod. He snatched his purse and fled the scene. It contained Rs 460 in cash and an Aadhaar card. The police arrested him and seized the money and the rod. The Division Number 8 police arrested Saroj Paswan of Haibowal and Ajay in a snatching incident. A case was registered against them. The police said Babli Rani of Fatehgarh Sahib came to Ludhiana and went for shopping at Ghumar Mandi on November 30. Her purse was snatched and a complaint was registered at Division Number 8 police station. The duo were arrested in the case and 15 mobiles and a bike were seized from their possession. They were taken on police remand. Closure of Domoria railway underbridge irks commuters Manav Mander Tribune News Service Ludhiana, December 4 The closure of the Domoria railway underbridge (RUB) is giving traffic blues to the people commuting in this part of the city. The RUB is a crucial underpass which connects the old city to the Civil Lines area. The rush on the Lakkar overbridge has increased manifold as vehicles going towards the Domoria RUB are now taking the route. Making things worse are commuters who are driving on wrong side on the Lakkar overbridge. Satish Kumar, who works at a bank located near Mata Rani Chowk, said it took him an hour to reach his office as there was traffic congestion and to make things worse, people were driving on wrong side on the Lakkar overbridge. “I came to the AC market Work in progress at the Domoria RUB that has been closed for upgrade in Ludhiana. The traffic has gone haywire and the people are taking wrong routes. The traffic police should depute personnel to check wrongside driving on the Lakkar overbridge,” said Ashima, a visitor at the AC market. “It is always difficult to come on this side of the city and with the closure of the Domoria RUB, I will avoid coming to the area unless it is important,” said Jaskirat, a city resident. Meanwhile, shops located near the Domoria RUB are fearing losses as the people will avoid coming to the place. “We understand that development is necessary but my only concern is that the project should be completed in stipulated time. Business will definitely go down due to the closure,” said a shopkeeper. Huge traffic snarls can be seen around Bhadaur House, Mata Rani Chowk, Clock Tower and the Jagraon bridge as the people are adopting alternative routes to reach their destinations. The Domoria RUB has been closed for three months as the railway authorities have initiated the track-doubling work here on Monday. The work on the bridge is a part of the line doubling project between Ludhiana and Mullanpur.
