The local administration, which was to release its revised electoral list by December 7, could not release it even till this evening. Likewise, none of the political parties, including the Congress, Aam Aadmi Party, BJP or SAD, had announced any of its candidates for the 85-ward Municipal Corporation. With two days already over, only two days are left for the candidates to file their papers. DCC chief Rajinder Beri and general secretary of the Congress legal cell Parminder Vig on Tuesday said the dilly-dallying of the administration in releasing the revised voter list, even three days after the scheduled date, indicated that the candidates of rival parties were being stopped for filing their papers in time. “The administration has failed in its duty to declare the revised electoral list in time and this has happened for the first time. We have even approached officials for providing us the list, but to no avail. The candidates of rival parties are already being pressured by the ruling AAP to join it or are being dissuaded from contesting from other parties. Had any candidate submitted papers today on the basis of draft voter list, the papers would have been cancelled,” said Beri and Vig. Saurabh Seth’s wife Kavita Seth had contested last time unsuccessfully. Before their joining AAP this evening, the BJP had already issued a release announcing their expulsion from the party. As a preparatory measure, all candidates, who are expecting ticket from the parties that they represent, continued to make a beeline for getting No-Due Certificates (NDCs) from the Municipal Corporation office for contesting the polls. Of the 358 candidates applied for NDCs in the office yesterday, 246 had been issued these. About 650 more applications were received, of which about 630 certificates were issued by this evening. Cong list of 35 candidates out, BJP names 34 Our Correspondent PHAGWARA, DECEMBER 10 The Congress released a list of 35 candidates for the municipal corporation’s elections tonight. Reliable sources told The Tribune that the Congress would contest MC elections in an alliance with the Bahujan Samaj Party and six candidates of the BSP and remaining nine of the Congress would be announced tomorrow. In AAP, announcement of ticket seems to be a difficult job due to tug of war between two factions in the party. Despite efforts of MP Dr Raj MC repair work in full swing, residents call it poll gimmick Avneet Kaur Tribune News Service Jalandhar, December 10 With the MC elections round the corner, MC officials, including Commissioner, Joint Commissioners and various department heads, are working round the clock to address long-standing complaints of residents. From wall paintings and graffiti to road repairs, streetlight installations and garbage removal, the city is witnessing a flurry of activity. Even areas that have been neglected for years are now being visited by MC teams for inspections and upgrades, with the municipal authorities keen to leave no stone unturned in the lead-up to the elections. However, amid this sudden surge in activity, many residents are skeptical about whether these efforts are genuine or simply an election-time gimmick. Civic issues that have plagued the city for decades, including poor road infrastructure, faulty streetlights, overflowing sewage, flooded roads and ineffective waste management, remain largely unresolved. Despite repeated promises from previous and current governments, long-lasting solutions seem to remain elusive. One of the most pressing Men at work to paint the grills of a divider at Guru Nanakpura road and repair work on road underway in Jalandhar. MALKIAT SINGH issues for residents is the growing Wariana garbage dump, which has become a symbol of the city’s mismanagement of waste. Despite its expansion over the years, there remains no concrete plan to address the mounting waste crisis. The dump has led to serious environmental and health concerns, with residents in surrounding areas complaining about foul odour, rodents and pollution. The city generates tonnes of waste daily, but the MC has failed to present a sustainable waste management strategy, leaving the Wariana dump to grow unchecked. c m y b Even residents of multiple localities, including Vikaspuri, Urban Estate and Model Town, have taken to the streets against the garbage dumps in their areas. While these protests have highlighted the severity of the issue, the MC’s response has been less than satisfactory, with no clear solutions in sight. Residents fear that the dumps in their areas will become like a Wariana dump as it continues to expand without a viable plan to reduce waste or introduce proper waste segregation, recycling or composting methods. Manmeet Kaur, a local resident, voiced her concerns over the sudden burst of activity, calling it a mere election gimmick. “What we’re seeing now is all just for show. Once the elections are over, the city will once again be left crying out for basic amenities,” she said. Kaur pointed to the promises made during the Jalandhar West byelection, where significant efforts were made to tackle the waterlogging issues. However, according to her, no tangible progress had been made since. Another resident Manohar Lal highlighted the MC’s fail- mitment to the welfare of the region and his ability to connect with the people. Welcoming them into the party, Dr Chabbewal hailed their inclusion as a major achievement for AAP. “This is a testament to the growing acceptance of AAP among the people. It reflects their trust in our vision and developmental initiatives,” he said. Prominent AAP leaders, including Harji Mann, district president Lalita Saklani, Jarnail Gill, Gurdeep Deepa, Vicky Sood and Jaspal Singh, were present during the announcement. This defection marks a setback for Akali Dal (Amritsar), which now faces challenges in retaining its influence in the region. ure to address even the most basic complaints. “Hundreds of complaints regarding the poor park upkeep, non-functional streetlights and road repairs are still pending on the MC’s grievance portal. Despite this, we receive notifications stating that our complaints have been resolved,” he said. However, Lal expressed hope that the new MC House would take citizens’ concerns seriously and prioritise longterm solutions over temporary fixes. “Enough with the short-term patchwork. We deserve to live in a clean and functional city,” he added. Kumar Chabbewal, both factions are playing different tunes. AAP halka incharge former minister Joginder Singh Maan, AAP spokesman Harji Maan was facing interal opposition from the other group which include Santosh Kumar Gogi, Improvement Trust Chairman Advocate Kashmir Singh Malhi, District Planning Board Chairperson Lalit Saklani and Ashok Bhatia.
