On the last day today, 656 nominations were filed. Meanwhile, 68 candidates for the Municipal Council, Maachiwara, 74 for Municipal Council, Sahnewal, 55 for Municipal Council, Dakha, 43 for Malaud nagar panchayat, five for nagar council, Khanna (ward 2), and three for nagar council, Samrala (ward 12), have filed their papers. Fire at power grid hits supply in areas along Tajpur Road Shivani Bhakoo Tribune News Service Ludhiana, December 12 Following the damage of two major transformers due to a fire, there was a total blackout in and around the Tajpur Road area since Wednesday evening. About 115 dyeing units along with other industry and residents have been suffering in the absence of the power supply since 6 pm on Wednesday when the fire broke out in major transformers at the power grid on Tajpur Road. Over 100 employees of the PSPCL were on their toes to rectify the problem. They were shifting the load to other grids. DS Grewal, Director, Distribution, PSPCL had come from Patiala to supervise the situation. He, along with senior officials, visited the place, where over 100 employees were already put on duty to do the needful. “Power will be restored in the area from alternative grids while the affected grid will be put up on operation in parts — one transformer will be operational by Sunday and the second by Thursday,” Grewal said while talking to The Tribune. Boby Jindal, owner of a dye- ing unit on Tajpur Road, said were hundreds of industries in the area and residents were suffering in the absence of power due to the massive fire that broke out at the power grid on Tajpur Road on Wednesday evening. He said industrialists were running units on generators but it was not a viable option. “We are doing necessary works and waiting for power to be restored. We have been told that around 24-36 hours can be taken to rectify the problem while the load is being shifted on other grids to restore the power supply,” he said. The police have also recovered an iron rod and a Honda Activa scooter from the suspect. Mohit and Mohammad Hanif (48), who were friends, used to sale and purchase animals. During a deal, differences erupted between the two and the former killed Hanif with an iron rod on December 9. Investigating officer Madhu Bala said at Jassian village, Hanif had taken a land on rent from where he was working. He had business ties with Mohit. Both had differences over some financial matter. They used to snatch mobile s of passen- Tribune News Service Ludhiana, December 12 The Ludhiana Municipal Corporation elections are round the corner and amid all this, the issue of solid waste management has rocked the city after the National Green Tribunal (NGT)-appointed Court Commissioner has pointed out major flaws regarding the handling of solid waste management in Ludhiana. Despite the implementation of various solid waste management programmes by the corporation, one can still see garbage heaps, litter and clogged drains across the city. One of the main demands of the city residents before the upcoming Municipal House will be management of solid waste. Members of the Punjab Action Committee (PAC), Kapil Arora and Kuldeep Singh Khaira, had filed complaints about solid waste being dumped into the Gill village pond, Model Town Extension, Giaspura, Bajwa Nagar and other places in the city. The NGT formed a joint committee and after it submitted its reports, the applicant raised objections disputing the committee’s findings after which in October this year, the NGT had appointed Court Commissioner Bhanwarpal Singh Jadon who visited various sites in the city to conduct a thorough inspection of arrangements made by the civic body for garbage c m y b management in the city and identified significant flaws in the report submitted by the joint committee. Jadon conducted visits to 27 sites to verify actual conditions and ground reality and identified Giaspura and old primary dumping site on Hambran Road as the worstaffected locations, with conditions deteriorating by the day. It was hard to even breath properly in the area and this site even had burnt waste material spread in the area and such burning of garbage is a daily practice at the site releasing harmful toxicants and life-threatening gases,” said the Court Commissioner in his report. Meanwhile, at Old Courts Road, huge garbage was dumped outside the boundary wall of the portable compactor. He observed that on a Honda Activa from them. Both suffered bullet injuries and were undergoing treatment at the DMCH here. They were stated to be in a critical condition. Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Sumit Sood said Sukhjit Singh and Sukhdev Singh have a property business and due to some dispute over a property, both opened fire at each other on Wednesday. MC Commissioner Aaditya Dachalwal said the civic body was taking all necessary steps to improve solid waste management in the city but this goal could not be achieved without active support of residents.
