The submission came during the hearing of a petition filed in public interest on infrastructure and accessibility issues related to the airport. Appearing before the Division Bench of Justice Arun Palli and Justice Sudeepti Sharma, Punjab Additional Advocate-General Shekhar Verma submitted that the proposed 50-metre-wide road was currently being laid at the site in accordance with the plan. The information was furnished in response to court query “as to what is the progress with regard to the alternative road to the airport that had been suggested long ago”. According to information, the shorter route is expected to pass through Sector 65-66 junction (near Bawa White House) and continue towards Sector 66-B. Appearing before the Bench, senior counsel Chetan Mittal on the airport’s behalf had pointed out that the proposed alternative routes would virtually reduce more than 7 km distance compared to the existing route from Chandigarh side. FILE PHOTO Govt misled Parl on 24x7 water supply project: MP Tribune News Service Chandigarh, February 11 Chandigarh MP Manish Tewari has accused the Central Government of misleading Parliament by claiming that no loan was taken for the 24x7 water supply project in Mani Majra. Raising a question on the erratic and muddy water supply in Mani Majra even six months after the project was inaugurated, in the Lok Sabha today, Tewari asked the Home Minister about the current status of the project, which was inaugurated by Amit Shah in August 2024 He also sought to know whether the project is still in the trial phase, and if so, the what are the reasons for the delay in achieving the goal of round-the-clock water supply in the area, and what measures are being undertaken to address issues such as the irregular supply of undrinkable and muddy water as reported in the area. He further asked the minister about the details of the loan taken for the 24×7 water supply project, including its repayment structure, interest rates and the financial liability it imposes on the residents of Chandigarh. In response to the questions, Nityanand Rai, Minister of State for Home Affairs, stated that the 24x7 water supply project in Mani Majra was commissioned in August 2024 under Smart Cities Mission and the physical infrastructure and trial run of the project has been completed. “Under the project, to cater to the grievances, a Consumer Grievance Cell and helpline number has been established. Officials from various departments, under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav, today assessed the progress of the new cycle track projects and address encroachment issues along such paths. He was accompanied by Municipal Corporation (MC) Commissioner Amit Kumar, Chief Engineer Sanjay Arora and other senior officers of the MC. Brar assessed the current status of the waste management and bio-mining project. It was the first time that all 12 committees have been constituted since the MC elections were held. The three statutory committees on roads, water supply and sewerage disposal, and house tax assessment have financial powers of Rs 25 lakh each, while the nine sub-committees can manage fiscal matters up to Rs 15 lakh each. The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising four eminent persons as trustees.
