OC MLA FLAGS BAD ROADS IN HOUSE Phagwara: The poor condition of roads connecting Phagwara to the Chandigarh bypass via Banga Road and Palahi Road echoed in the Punjab Assembly on Wednesday. Congress MLA Balwinder Singh Dhaliwal urged Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan to convey the demand for immediate reconstruction to the minister concerned. MLA Dhaliwal pointed out that repeated patchwork repairs have been inadequate, and the PWD has not undertaken proper reconstruction for nearly a decade. These roads witness heavy traffic daily, with Palahi Road serving as a key link between rural areas and the bypass, while Banga Road remains a recurring issue during elections due to its deep potholes. The MC Commissioner said that strict instructions have been given to the Superintendent (Advertisement) to ensure that all business owners, whether small or large, adhere to the Punjab Government’s advertisement policy while installing signboards outside their establishments. In the fray for the key post of the president are Aditya Jain, who has remained president for the last two consecutive terms and is trying for a hat-trick, and Rattan Dua, exsecretary of the DBA. Both are in a hectic campaign mode for the past nearly a month, primarily by holding high-budget parties in city hotels. Both have rolled out a huge agenda of works that they would pursue upon getting the top post. The entry gate to the chambers of the lawyers and all roads leading to the courts have been covered with huge banners and posters put up by the contenders, who are investing heavily in their campaigns. Amanat Bhagat, Mehul Khanna, Mohd Rafiq Azad, Mumtaz, Neha Attri, Paras Choudhary, Prabhu Dhir, Payal, Sonam, Tajinder Singh and Vijay Mishra are contesting for the post of executive members. 3 women arrested, 160 intoxicating pills seized Our Correspondent Phagwara, February 26 In a major breakthrough in the drive against drug menace, the Phillaur police have arrested three female drug peddlers and seized 160 nintoxicating pills in two operations. The arrests were made at Ganna village as part of the intensified drive against drug trafficking. The accused have been identified as Anita Rani, wife of Mangat Ram, Rani, wife of Minda, and Preeti, wife of Harjinder, all residents of Ganna village. Addressing the media, SSP Harkamal Preet Singh Khakh said that that Inspector Sanjeev Kapur, Phillaur SHO, received a tip-off on some drug movement in the area. Acting swiftly, a special team was constituted under SP (Investigation) Jasrup Kaur Bath and Phillaur DSP Sarwan Singh Bal. The police team intercepted Anita on February 22, leading to the seizure of 70 narcotic pills. Following her interrogation, the team apprehended Rani and Preeti on February 24 and seized 45 pills from each suspect. During questioning, the accused revealed they had been operating a distribution network sourcing drugs from surrounding areas and supplying to neighbouring villages. Meanwhile, SSP Khakh has urged citizens to support the police by sharing information about drug trafficking activities. 14 arrested in Nakodar in one and a half months Stepping up its drive against drug smuggling, the Jalandhar Rural Police have registered nine cases under the NDPS Act and arrested 14 accused in Nakodar subdivision between January 1 and February 25 this year. The police teams seized 8 gm of heroin, 12 capsules and 1,847 intoxicating tablets during the operations. Divulging details, SSP Harkamal Preet Singh Khakh said efforts were being intensified to dismantle drug networks operating in the region. He urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the police. To further strengthen the crackdown, special teams have been constituted in all sub-divisions of Jalandhar Rural under the supervision of sub-divisional DSPs to make the campaign more effective. Democratic Kisan Sabha ASI gets award for making portraits with ‘zarkan’ leader attacked after protest Jupinderjit Singh Tribune News Service Ashok Kaura Phagwara, February 26 Following a protest against corruption, Kuldeep Singh Phillaur, a senior leader of the Democratic Kisan Sabha, Punjab, was reportedly attacked and injured at his residence by Bhupinder Singh Sanghera, a local lambardar. The attack took place after a demonstration was held in which protesters burned an effigy of the Phillaur tehsildar, accusing him of corruption. According to reports, the accused forcibly entered Kuldeep’s house, verbally abused him and gave him death threats. He allegedly warned the leader of serious consequences if any further protests were held against the tehsildar. The attack left Kuldeep injured, and he was admitted to the Civil Hospital in Phillaur. Upon receiving the information about the incident, Rajeev Kapoor, SHO of Phillaur police station, visited the hospital. Based on the victim’s statement, an FIR has been registered. The police have launched a search operation to apprehend the accused, Bhupinder Singh Sanghera, son of Harbhajan Singh, a resident of Phillaur. During the protest, Sanghera had allegedly attempted to provoke demon- strators with abusive language, but was restrained from doing so. Leaders of the Democratic Kisan Sabha, including comrade Jarnail Philaur, advocate Sanjeev Bhoura and Kuljit Singh Phillaur, have condemned the attack and warned the administration of a largescale protest if the culprit was not brought to book. Various farmer and labour organisations, including the Rural Labour have acondemned the incident, calling for strict action against those responsible. They have urged the authorities concerned to take immediate steps to curb such acts of violence against protesting leaders. Chandigarh, February 26 From a life of penury, where he earned a livelihood by making sketches, Assistant SubInspector (ASI) Ashok Kumar has gained worldwide recognition for his excellence in creating portraits using American diamonds. Earlier this week, he was awarded a certificate of excellence by the World Book of Records in Dubai. Ramdas Athawale, Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment of India, presented the award to Ashok, who is the first artist to create ‘diamond’ portraits of icons that shimmer with life. Ashok uses American diamonds, also locally known as ‘zarkan’, to give a sparkling impression to his portraits. These diamonds are not expensive, but shine a lot. In 2019, Kumar set a world record by creating the largest painting (18ft x 12ft) of Guru Nanak Dev. In 2020, the Limca Book of Records recognised him for making miniature portraits (2.5cm x 2.5cm) of women pioneers in various fields and all Presidents of India. Ashok, hailing from Ludhiana and currently posted in Jalandhar, used to be a temporary employee with the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation in the early 2000s. During President Abdul Kalam’s visit to Ludhiana in September 2003, Ashok had the opportunity to present a portrait to the President. Impressed by his work, Kalam awarded him Rs 20,000 and requested local officials to regularise his job. Kumar joined the Punjab Police as a constable a few months later. “I feel I have special blessings from Guru Nanak Dev,” he added.
