As Roy was speaking, Speaker Om Birla quipped, “Does the continued on page 8 Takht Kesgarh Jathedar takes charge amid protocol row GS Paul Tribune News Service Amritsar, March 10 In the backdrop of the controversy over the “arbitrary” removal of Takht jathedars, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj today assumed charge as the Jathedar of Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib at Anandpur Sahib and later as the officiating Jathedar of Akal Takht in Amritsar amid allegations of the protocol being flouted. As per the Sikh tradition of “dastarbandi” (installation ceremony), the head granthi of the Golden Temple is supposed to present the “dastar” (turban) to a newly appointed Jathedar. In case he is not available, he has to appoint a ‘Maryada violated as Golden Temple head granthi missing’ granthi of the Golden Temple as his representative to perform the ritual. This is followed by representatives of various Sikh and Nihang organisations, the SGPC president and top officials presenting the ‘dastar’ separately to the new appointee as a mark of respect. However, Giani Raghbir Singh and Giani Sultan Singh, who were removed as the jathedars of Akal Takht and Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, respectively, by the SGPC and continue to hold the charge of the head granthi and the granthi of the Golden Temple, respectively, were conspicuous by their absence today. A career economist and a former Governor of the Bank of Canada, Carney’s immediate focus after taking charge would have to be on managing domestic challenges and foreign policy. A key concern is the retaliatory tariff announced by US President Donald Trump, which threatens to disrupt Canada’s economy and job market. With federal elections approaching, Mark Carney political observers believe his leadership would have implications for the Liberal Party. The Tribune, now published from Chandigarh, started publication on February 2, 1881, in Lahore (now in Pakistan). It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia, a public-spirited philanthropist, and is run by a trust comprising four eminent persons as trustees.
The Tribune, the largest selling daily in North India, publishes news and views without any bias or prejudice of any kind. Restraint and moderation, rather than agitational language and partisanship, are the hallmarks of the paper. It is an independent newspaper in the real sense of the term.
The English edition apart, the 133-year-old Tribune has two sister publications, Punjabi Tribune (in Punjabi) and Dainik Tribune (in Hindi).
