Chandigarh, April 30 The High Court today issued notice of motion to the State of Punjab on a petition filed by Adampur MLA Sukhwinder Singh Kotli against the construction of a Bio-CNG plant on the land of Bhogpur Cooperative Sugar Mills Limited in Jalandhar district. The petitioner through counsel Nikhil Ghai contended that preventing the project from coming up was essential to protect the lives of Bhogpur village residents and curb environmental pollution. He contended that the proposed plant was being constructed just 100 metres from the abadi area, where a large number of people – including those from marginalized sections such as daily wagers and small shopkeepers – resided. The petition, taken up by a Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Sheel Nagu and Justice Sumeet Goel, stated that the villager were “distressed and severely affected” due to already existing pollution caused by the sugar mill. The MLA submitted that the additional environ- mental burden from the BioCNG plant would worsen the situation, creating unhygienic, inhuman, and dangerous conditions for the residents. The next date of hearing has now been fixed for May 26. Cong rallies behind MLA Kotli over FIR Congress PCC chief Amarinder Singh Raja Warring and Leader of the Opposition Partap Bajwa have rallied behind Congress Adampur MLA Sukhwinder S Kotli, who has been booked by Jalandhar police for blocking the Jalandhar-Pathankot highway at Bhogpur. Kotli on April 23 staged a dharna on the highway along with residents and farmers of the area against the installation of bio-CNG plant at Bhogpur sugarmill. Bajwa wrote on ‘X’ today, “The FIR against Kotli is a blatant act of vendetta by the AAP government. Officers must remember that they are servants of the Constitution, not tools for political persecution. Congress stands united.” The FIR has been lodged against Kotli, his aide Ashwin Bhalla, 20 identified men and 100-150 unidentified people. The Tribune, the largest selling daily in North India, publishes news and views without any bias or prejudice of any kind. Restraint and moderation, rather than agitational language and partisanship, are the hallmarks of the paper. It is an independent newspaper in the real sense of the term.
